Seahawks nominate WR Tyler Lockett for Walter Payton award again

The Seattle Seahawks have made wide receiver Tyler Lockett their Walter Payton Man of the Year nominee for the second straight year.

The Seattle Seahawks have made wide receiver Tyler Lockett their Walter Payton Man of the Year nominee for the second straight year.

Lockett is being honored for his play on the field as well as his work off of it, specifically his Light It Up Foundation, which helps Black communities in his hometown of Tulsa, Oklahoma.

With the exception of Bobby Wagner – who almost single-handedly beat his former team on Sunday – Lockett is the classiest player to come along during the Pete Carroll era. He’s carried himself with nothing but grace and has always represented the team well.

Through 12 games in 2022, Lockett has posted 66 catches, 836 receiving yards and scored seven touchdowns.

Today, the team announced that Thompson is their 2020 Walter Payton Man of the Year nominee. Here’s what No. 54 had to say, per the team website.

“I’m doing it from my heart. . .  you know me, you know I don’t like a lot of lights on me. I want to step up as a leader — let my voice be heard and my face be shown.”

As for Thompson’s work on the field, he had some troubles in the middle of the season but has come on strong over the last several games. He’s totaled 87 combined tackles (four for a loss), five passes defensed and two forced fumbles.

Last year, former Carolina quarterback Cam Newton was the team’s nominee.
