Frank Ragnow is the Lions nominee for Walter Payton Man of the Year Award

The award honors “NFL players who excel on the field and demonstrate a passion for creating a lasting positive impact beyond the game in their communities.”

Congratulations are in order for Lions center Frank Ragnow. He is the team’s nominee for the 2023 Walter Payton Man of the Year Award.

It’s an honor that goes annually to players who show excellence in character and dedication off the field as well as on the playing field. The Walter Payton Award is one that players respect and covet every year.

A very gracious Ragnow released a statement about his nomination via the Lions,

“I am incredibly grateful to be recognized for one of the most prestigious honors in our League, especially while being on a team filled with so many guys who impact the community in different ways and have supported the Rags Remembered Foundation. My family and I take a lot of pride in this Foundation, and to be able to help grieving families through the outdoors is something that we are very passionate about. This is a huge step in being able to help a lot more kids and families in the future.”

Ragnow is noted for his Fishin’ for Memories outreach program and his extensive work with bereaved families and children.

From the NFL’s press release,

All 32 nominees will be recognized for their achievements during the week leading up to Super Bowl LVIII. The 2023 Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year winner will be announced during NFL Honors, a primetime awards special to air nationally on CBS on Thursday, Feb. 8.

Each nominee will receive up to a $55,000 donation, and the Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year award winner will receive a $250,000 donation to the charity of his choice. All donations are made possible by the NFL Foundation and Nationwide.

Recent Lions nominees include Jared Goff (2022), Jason Cabinda (2021) and Trey Flowers (2020).

Arik Armstead is 49ers Walter Payton Man of the Year nominee

Arik Armstead is the #49ers’ Walter Payton Man of the Year nominee for the 4th year in a row.

In perhaps the least surprising news of the 49ers’ season, defensive lineman Arik Armstead has been named the team’s Walter Payton Man of the Year nominee. It’s the fourth consecutive year he’s been nominated for the award.

The Walter Payton Man of the Year is an annual award given out by the NFL that rewards players for exhibiting excellence on and off the field.

For Armstead he’s been a steady force on the 49ers’ defensive line while also continuing to do a ton of work in his home community of Sacramento with his foundation the Armstead Academic Project.

The Armstead Academic Project, among other things, aims to provide equity, inclusiveness and fairness in education. His work through the foundation has earned him four WPMOY nominations in a row for the 49ers.

Voting for the award can be done by fans on Twitter by posting #WPMOYChallenge along with the last name or Twitter handle of the player they want to vote for.

They can also vote online using NFL.com/ManOfTheYear.

Rams nominate Cooper Kupp for Walter Payton Man of the Year Award

Cooper Kupp is the Rams’ nominee for the prestigious Walter Payton Man of the Year Award

Cooper Kupp is known for his outstanding play on the field, but he’s also a leader in the community. He’s often doing charitable work in some form or fashion, whether it’s providing meals at local food banks or donating Nike gear to help Inglewood Unified School District students.

Kupp is certainly one of the good guys, and the Rams are recognizing him for all the community work he does. The NFL announced 32 nominees for the Walter Payton Man of the Year Award, and the Rams nominated their star receiver.

Kupp will try to join Andrew Whitworth as a Walter Payton Man of the Year recipient after Whitworth won the award in 2021 for all the charitable causes he supported – and continues to support in his post-playing days.

“My family and I are honored to be nominated alongside just a few of the many players in the NFL family that are doing great work in their respective communities,” Kupp said. “Lending a helping hand, recognizing where there are needs, and finding ways to bridge the gap. While I am thankful for the NFL giving us a platform to shine a light on a few of the causes that are important to us, we all have the ability to give of ourselves in one way or another that can change the lives of the people around us.”

The Rams surprised Kupp with the news of his nomination recently, and they shared the video of that reveal with everyone on social media.

The Walter Payton Man of the Year Award is considered by many to be the most prestigious handed out each year, with many past winners calling it their greatest honor. Simply being nominated is a commendable sign of recognition, and all 32 nominees will be celebrated in the week leading up to the Super Bowl.

The winner will be announced and recognized at the NFL Honors show on Feb. 8, just a few days before Super Bowl LVIII.

Below is the complete list of the 32 nominees for the award.

Away from the field, he’s done great work with different organizations, including his Ingold Family Foundation, whose mission is to connect youth with community leaders and “foster the ecosystem of excellence they create together.”

Texans linebacker Christian Kirksey provides Uvalde High School football team with Nike Air Force 1s

Houston Texans linebacker Christian Kirksey gave Nike Air Force 1s to the Uvalde High School football team as part of his continue support.

Houston Texans linebacker Christian Kirksey surprised the Uvalde High School football team with new footwear.

The Texans’ 2022 Walter Payton Man of the Year nominee surprised the Uvalde Coyotes with new Nike Air Force 1s. Each member of the team received a pair of shoes that are customized in the school’s colors, maroon and gray.

The gift isn’t the first time Kirksey partnered with Uvalde. As part of Kirksey’s nomination for Walter Payton Man of the Year, he surprised head football coach Wade Miller and senior linebacker Justyn Rendon with tickets to Super Bowl LVII in Glendale, Arizona.

Kirksey also chose the Boys & Girls Club & Teen Center of Uvalde as the beneficiary of the NFL Foundation’s donation in his honor.

The The Boys & Girls Club of America is actively fundraising to bring a state-of-the-art, stand-alone club to Uvalde to further benefit the community by providing positive programming, mental health support, and a sense of stability and security to help Uvalde’s young people move forward.

On Oct. 22, Kirksey traveled to Uvalde nearly five months after the tragedy at Robb Elementary School to surprise the Coyotes football team at their team dinner, wherein he gave the team new Nike uniforms and interacted with the young football players.

Vikings defensive lineman Harrison Phillips shows his kind heart

Phillips has a tremendous heart

Minnesota Vikings defensive lineman Harrison Phillips was at the Timberwolves game Monday night when news broke that Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin had collapsed on the field following a routine tackle. Phillips signed with the Vikings this past offseason, but he previously played for the Bills, so he knows Hamlin quite well. In fact, Phillips and Hamlin had lockers near each other back when Phillips was still playing for the Bills.

After hearing the news about Hamlin, Phillips first prayed for Hamlin, but then he tried to think of how he could help his former teammate from afar. He did so by catering for everyone on the ICU floor.

Phillips didn’t stop there with his kind heart. He is known throughout the league as being a community guy and has been nominated in the past for the Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year award. So it comes as no surprise that Phillips wanted to help in this situation as well.

Phillips, along with the rest of the NFL and its fans, are hoping and praying for Hamlin’s recovery. In the meantime, these kind gestures, like the one Phillips displayed, make a bad situation just a little bit better.
