Transfer guard Alijah Martin discusses transition to Florida

Guard Alijah Martin is ready to start his SEC career with Florida after three years at FAU, and he says Gators Nation better be ready for a show.

Alijah Martin has come to Gainesville and is ready to put on a show.

“Be alert. You don’t want to miss nothing,” Martin said to Isaac Edelman of FLTeams on Tuesday. “Get all your popcorn, get all your drinks before (the game) or at halftime because you don’t want to miss nothing. Something will go off.”

The Florida Atlantic transfer is set to join a veteran backcourt at Florida made up of NBA hopefuls [autotag]Walter Clayton Jr[/autotag]. and [autotag]Will Richard[/autotag]. Martin has a shot at running the point for the Gators, but he could also serve as a spark plug off the bench in a sixth-man role.

So far, the in-state transition has gone well. There aren’t any personality clashes, and Martin has already stepped into somewhat of a leadership role as a college veteran.

“I think it’s going to go real smooth,” Martin said of the transition. “(During) my time at FAU, we played high-level teams. Moving up to the SEC, we’re going to be playing high-level teams every night. So, I feel like I proved myself (and) performed great against high-level teams, and this step will be no different.”

Martin said that the platform Florida offers helped him land on the program. The goal is to get Florida back to the NCAA Tournament and go further than the first round. Martin made back-to-back appearances in March Madness with FAU.

“I walk in every day and see those Final Four banners in our facility,” he said. “I want to bring one to this university as well. Not only to solidify myself as a college player but to have an impact on two programs.

He admitted that [autotag]Todd Golden[/autotag]’s coaching style is a bit different from what Dustin May offered at FAU, but it hasn’t been difficult to adjust to a “player’s coach.”

Edelman’s complete interview with Martin can be found here.

Gators hoops firmly in ESPN’s too-early top 25 rankings

Florida basketball is just outside the top 20 in ESPN’s latest too-early men’s hoops rankings.

Florida basketball had a promising 2023-24 campaign that signaled a return to relevancy for the Gators hoops program. [autotag]Todd Golden[/autotag] made huge strides with his roster during his second season in Gainesville and the momentum from those gains are continuing into next fall.

ESPN staff writer Jeff Borzello penned up his way-too-early rankings for the 2024-25 campaign and included the Orange and Blue among his top 25, placing UF at No. 21 overall. He explains his justification for the rankings rather succinctly.

“Florida struck gold in the portal last spring and reeled in three transfers this year. The Gators also have All-American candidate and one of the nation’s top scorers in [autotag]Walter Clayton Jr[/autotag]., and [autotag]Will Richard[/autotag] is a double-figure scorer.

“Former Florida Atlantic star [autotag]Alijah Martin[/autotag] will slot in seamlessly. Todd Golden should have plenty of frontcourt options too: [autotag]Alex Condon[/autotag] and [autotag]Thomas Haugh[/autotag] are back, while [autotag]Sam Alexis[/autotag] (Chattanooga) and [autotag]Rueben Chinyelu[/autotag] (Washington State) have arrived.”

Florida’s projected starting lineup

Walter Clayton Jr. (17.6 PPG)
Alijah Martin (13.1 PPG at Florida Atlantic)
Will Richard (11.4 PPG)
Alex Condon (7.7 PPG)
Reuben Chinyelu (4.7 PPG at Washington State)

Gators 2024-25 season opener

Florida will face the South Florida Bulls on Nov. 4 at the VyStar Veterans Memorial Arena in Jacksonville, according to recent reports. The only officially announced game on Florida’s schedule is the Dec. 4 matchup with Virginia, which is part of the SEC-ACC Challenge.

Gators basketball adds Slovenian guard Urban Klavzar to fill out roster

Florida basketball’s final roster spot goes to another player from the international scene. Slovenian sharpshooter Urban Klavzar is now a Gator!

Florida’s backcourt got help in a big way on Monday as Todd Golden completed the 2024-25 men’s basketball roster with the addition of Slovenian point guard [autotag]Urban Klavzar[/autotag], according to Swamp247.

While technically a freshman, the 20-year-old Slovenian product has been around European professional basketball since 2014. He debuted in 2021 and got significant playing time last season in Spain’s second division. He’s a three-point specialist who shot 42.7% from deep.

Klavzar should get playing time early on, giving Florida’s veteran backcourt a break in any non-conference games that get lopsided. [autotag]Walter Clayton Jr[/autotag]. and Will Richard are both back and shoe-ins to start. They could end up at the 2 and 3, allowing FAU transfer [autotag]Alijah Martin[/autotag] to break into the starting five. Junior [autotag]Denzel Aberdeen[/autotag] is in the mix, too.

That leaves Klavzar fighting to break into a fairly established rotation, but he has the experience to do it. Some of the international teams Klavzar has played against are comparable to the NBA G-League or better, so the transition to college ball shouldn’t be too shocking.

Where Florida basketball falls in Lunardi’s May bracketology update

It might be way too early to start talking March Madness projections, but Florida took a dip in the latest ESPN bracketology update.

Look, we get it, the last thing most college sports fans are thinking about is basketball right now. The NBA Finals are upon us, football season is almost here and the real ones are neck-deep in baseball for the summer.

But ESPN bracketology expert Joe Lunardi makes an excellent point when he claims that “there is no longer an off-season in college basketball.” Monthly updates are required with the sport’s constant movement over the so-called offseason.

As the month of May draws to a close, Florida is trending down on Lunardi’s 2025 NCAA Tournament projections. He views the Gators as a No. 9 seed right now, a step back from the No. 7 seed Florida secured in 2024.

Florida is losing a good amount of talent. Replacing a First Team All-SEC talent in Zyon Pullin won’t be easy, and finding a big man to fill Tyrese Samuel’s shoes will be hard, too.

Still, the Gators have already brought in a solid transfer portal haul and  [autotag]Walter Clayton Jr[/autotag]. and [autotag]Will Richard[/autotag] both announced their return within the past month. It’s a bit of a headscratcher to see Lunardi drop the Gators following those returns, but every team is spending the summer trying to upgrade the roster.

Clayton has a first-round ceiling and could help Florida climb up Lunardi’s projections with a strong summer. The season doesn’t begin until November, but the team does work out together in the fall.

Florida gets star G Walter Clayton Jr. back for senior year

Florida basketball will get leading scorer Walter Clayton Jr. back for a second year after he withdrew his name from the 2024 NBA draft.

The biggest question mark of [autotag]Todd Golden[/autotag] and the Florida men’s basketball team’s offseason was answered on Memorial Day when guard [autotag]Walter Clayton Jr[/autotag]. announced his return to the program for the 2024-25 season.

Clayton was one of two Gators testing out the draft waters. Senior wing [autotag]Will Richard[/autotag] announced his return to Gainesville on Saturday.

An Iona transfer, Clayton hit the ground running in Gainesville as the team’s leading scorer in a program-record-setting 2023-24 season. He earned a Second Team All-SEC nod after averaging 17.6 points per game and scoring the sixth-most points in program history (633).

He will be one of the top returning bucket-getters in the SEC next year with sights on a first-round selection in the 2025 NBA draft after testing well at the G League Elite Camp, according to Swamp247.

Clayton’s return was the final piece of the puzzle for Golden this offseason. The Gators have three incoming transfers that will get serious playing time, but it’s the returning players that will lead this team back to the NCAA Tournament (and hopefully past the first round).

Florida G Will Richard returning to school after testing NBA draft waters

After testing the NBA draft waters, Florida wing Will Richard is returning to Gainesville for another season with the Gators.

Senior guard [autotag]Will Richard[/autotag] will return to the Florida Gators men’s basketball team for the 2024-25 season after withdrawing his name from the 2024 NBA draft, according to Swamp247.

Richard came to Gainesville after a standout freshman year with the Belmont Bruins. He’s started 65 games for the Orange and Blue since then, averaging 10.9 points and 4.2 rebounds per game in a Gators uniform.

In 2023-24, Richard was a key cog in Florida’s offense, scoring 11.4 points per game. He is one of the team’s best returning three-point shooters after making 34.5% of his shots from deep last year.

Richard should be an everyday starter once again for Florida next season now that his return is official. Fellow Florida guard [autotag]Walter Clayton Jr[/autotag]. is the other player [autotag]Todd Golden[/autotag] is waiting to make a decision. He participated in the G League Elite Camp and will need to withdraw his name from the draft by Wednesday at 11:59 p.m. ET to retain eligibility.

Get Excited for 2024-25, Gators Fans

Joining Richard and Clayton in the projected starting lineup are FAU transfer [autotag]Alijah Martin[/autotag] at the 1 and Chattanooga transfer [autotag]Sam Alexis[/autotag] and sophomore [autotag]Alex Condon[/autotag] in the frontcourt.

Barring injury, Richard should eclipse the 1,000-point threshold as a Gator this season. He’ll start the year with 744 and has never scored fewer than 333 points during a full college season.

Pair of Gators prepare for G League Elite Camp this weekend

Zyon Pullin and Walter Clayton Jr. will be working out this weekend in hopes of elevating their NBA draft chances.

The Florida basketball program will be represented by two Gators this year at the G League Elite Camp in Chicago. Guards [autotag]Zyon Pullin[/autotag] and [autotag]Walter Clayton Jr[/autotag]. — the latter of which can still return to the team if the draft waters seem too cold — will showcase their talents in front of NBA coaches and front-office officials from May 11-12.

Clayton was included in the initial announcement on Saturday, which put him among the first 44 players named to the camp. Pullin got the call on Monday, pairing him up with his backcourt teammate from last season. The two were omitted from the NBA draft combine invitation list, but a strong showing this weekend could elevate them into consideration.

The two were added to Florida’s roster ahead of the 2023-24 campaign via the transfer portal as a part of [autotag]Todd Golden[/autotag]’s successful personnel reload. The dynamic duo was largely responsible for the Gators’ highest-scoring season in program history, as well as getting the program back to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in three seasons.

The Orange and Blue’s 24-12 overall record was the best since the 2016-17 campaign (27-9) and it reached its first SEC Tournament finals since 2014.

Trio of Gators talk Alabama win in postgame scrum

It has been an epic turnaround for Florida basketball since mid-January when many were worried that the Gators would stumble to another NCAA Tournament-less campaign. However, Todd Golden’s team had other plans, running off a streak of 10 wins in 13 tries — including a blowout of the Alabama Crimson Tide inside the O’Connell Center on Tuesday, 105-87.

Florida got a balanced performance from its lineup with five players finishing with double-digit points, led by Will Richard’s 23 along with five rebounds and two steals. Walter Clayton Jr. (22), Zyon Pullin (19), Tyrese Samuel (19) and Alex Condon (10) also finished in double digits for the Orange and Blue.

After the game, a triumvirate of top Florida performers spoke with the sports media to give their respective takes on the monumental victory. Here is what Richard, Clayton and Samuel had to offer in the postgame scrum.

RICHARD: “Start off by thanking the student section, I mean, it was special in there today. Not even just the students but everybody else in there, so want to start off by thanking them and showing that amount of support.”

SAMUEL: “Yes sir, best crowd in the country. They came out every game, homecourt advantage, we won, what, 14? 14-1? At home, that says a lot, so thank you to everyone that always come out to these games.”

CLAYTON: “Appreciate y’all.”

I think it mean a lot. You know, obviously being at home, you want to play your best, and I think that just shows us, it shows ourselves what we’re capable of. I feel like we did our job, a lot of people did their job on defense tonight, you know, that’s a great offensive team so felt like we did a great job on that end of the floor, and that just like, we need to be able to take that on the road with us, showing ourselves we’re capable of that at home and being able to do that on the road.

Yeah it was definitely important, I mean last time we played we were up and they hit some key threes that got them back in the game, so we knew to limit their threes would benefit us down the road.

Well, it was my second one, obviously, I’ve been here for one year but I felt the love going out there. I’m happy that I came to Florida, I feel embraced, and yeah like I’m just appreciative of being here, and I can’t really say much else.

It means a lot, because I don’t think I’ve ever won on Senior Night all my four years. Actually, that’s a lie. Senior Night’s always an emotional night, so people get caught up in their feelings, but we won today so that’s all that matters.

Very important, we were minus-10 on the glass at their place, so blocking out, Coach definitely made that an emphasis. Detain your man and get rebounds.

Big momentum changer. We got to go out there on Saturday and play a good Vandy team, beat them and then it’ll give us even more momentum going into the SEC Tournament and the NCAA Tournament as well.

I think we as a team, me included, we need to be better at just bringing the home energy to other people’s places. I think that’s a big part of, you know, we feed off the energy here from all our fans. So whenever we go on the road and we don’t have that many fans, we need to create our own energy, feed off that.

I don’t think we let ourselves off the hook. I feel like we can get lazy once we get up on a team, so for us it was just staying disciplined, everybody staying on their assignments, stuff like that, rebounding, finishing possessions, and just keep doing what we do on offense.

It’s great, they play hard every day. Every game it shows that they be going on the glass, they have like 10 rebounds amongst each other every game, even if they don’t play that much, they rebound hard. It helped us, it helped us, because I only had like four whatever the case is, so having them do that is great.

Very, very close. We go out to eat a lot, we do a lot of things together, so we are very selfless, so, yeah we’re really close.

RICHARD: “I agree with everything he just said.”

SAMUEL: “Oh yeah, most definitely. I feel like that’s one of the main points of our team, that we can’t finish out games, but today showed that we’re able to, and we’ve got to just continue with that trend.”

CLAYTON: “Kind of what he said, it’s definitely not a good feeling letting a team come back on you, so kind of like Will said, I think it’s a mental standpoint for us, you know, we’ve just got to be mentally tough. Go up 10, wherever you’re playing at and just keep your foot on the gas, you can’t let up.”

Yeah, oh for sure, you can definitely tell it’s a different energy with this team, this environment and everything. That was one of the reasons I came here, to help get Florida back to where it was, and we’re doing the right thing, so.

For sure. I think every young athlete wants to play in front of a crowd like this and win by that much, so it’s definitely huge.

CLAYTON: “It definitely shows we came a long way. ‘Rese, great job from the free-throw line.”

SAMUEL: “Hey man I appreciate you guys, man I appreciate you guys man.”

CLAYTON: “Nah you know, I know we had some free throw issues at the beginning of the year, even me myself included, I was missing some free throws, so just in that area, and like I said, defensively, I think we did a good job tonight just following the gameplan, everybody doing their assignments, so I think we definitely showed a lot of growth.”

Florida wraps up its regular-season schedule on Saturday, March 9, in Nashville as the Gators travel for a rematch with the Vanderbilt Commodores. Tipoff is slated for 4:30 p.m. ET and the game will be broadcast on the SEC Network.

Golden, Gators guard duo respond to Florida’s loss at South Carolina

Here’s what members of the team had to say about the win that got away on the road.

Florida basketball’s woes against zone defense continued on Saturday afternoon in Columbia where the South Carolina Gamecocks fought back from a double-digit deficit to prevail over the Gators, 82-76. Once again, [autotag]Todd Golden[/autotag]’s team led for 3/4 of the game only to squander the lead in the final 10 minutes.

The Orange and Blue had four players finishing with double digits in the points column, led by [autotag]Walter Clayton Jr[/autotag]., who also added three rebounds, two assists and two blocked shots. [autotag]Zyon Pullin[/autotag] also added 18 points along with seven assists and four rebounds; Tyrese Samuel (13) and Riley Kugel (10) were the other two in double digits.

Golden, Pullin and Clayton all spoke briefly with the media following the tough loss. Here is what they had to offer.

Trio of Gators discuss Vanderbilt home win on Saturday

Walter Clayton Jr., Tyrese Samuel and Will Richard spoke to the press following Saturday’s win.

The Vanderbilt Commodores paid a visit to the O’Connell Center on Saturday afternoon for a tangle with the Florida Gators as the Southeastern Conference schedule continues. Favored heavily coming into the game, Todd Golden’s team had little trouble handling their visitors, resulting in a 77-64 win.

[autotag]Will Richard[/autotag] paced the Orange and Blue with 21 points along with four rebounds, three assists and two steals. [autotag]Walter Clayton Jr[/autotag]. (19) and [autotag]Tyrese Samuel[/autotag] (15) were the others to crack the double-digit barrier.

The trio met up with the press scrum after the game to give their respective takes on Saturday’s win. Take a look below at what they had to say.
