Report: Titans’ agreement with DB Walt Aikens falls through

It looks like the Titans won’t be signing the special teams ace after all.

Just days after it was reported that the Tennessee Titans had agreed to terms with safety Walt Aikens, it appears the deal has fallen through.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Aikens won’t be joining the Titans despite his taking a physical with the team.

It isn’t clear exactly the reason, but the Titans will have to look for special teams help elsewhere.

Titans agree to terms with DB Walt Aikens, per agent

The Titans have added another defensive back to their roster.

The Tennessee Titans have added another safety to their training camp roster.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, who cites agent Drew Rosenhaus, the Titans have agreed to terms with safety Walt Aikens.

The 29-year-old was a fourth-round pick of the Miami Dolphins back in 2014 and has spent all six years of his career with the franchise. In 2019, Aikens totaled 21 combined tackles (one for loss) and one pass defended.

While the 6-foot-1, 200-pound safety did play on nearly 700 defensive snaps with Miami over the course of his tenure there, he played predominantly on special teams, an area he excelled at.

The Titans recently brought in three defensive backs for tryouts, but Aikens was not one of them. Tennessee doesn’t really have much of a need at safety right now, so it appears they’re looking for help on special teams.

Dolphins showcase funny pre-game exchange centered around coin toss

Tails never fails? Not exactly. The Dolphins found out the hard way that the saying isn’t 100% fact this season.

Have you ever heard the saying “tails never fails”? It’s a commonly accepted, unscientific fact for many. If you’re flipping a coin, call it tails!

That methodology didn’t work out so great for the Miami Dolphins earlier in the 2019 regular season — and Ryan Fitzpatrick wasn’t afraid to call out teammate Walt Aikens over it.

In a recently released clip, the Dolphins captains discussed what to call in the team’s opening coin toss against the New York Jets from last month — both Fitzpatrick and Aikens agreed that “tails” was the call, a promising start.

It came up heads.

And then and there, at midfield before a December road game, Fitzpatrick jokingly glared at Aikens for the missed call, to which Aikens simply responded:

“Don’t blame me!”

It’s a simple gesture, but another great example of the kind of persona that Ryan Fitzpatrick served as for the Dolphins this season — and helps to explain why the team and the coaches alike gravitated so much towards him. That now becomes the mission for the Dolphins in 2020 and beyond: find another leader and personality that has as much magnetism as Ryan Fitzpatrick. Because it was that ability to keep the team relaxed and loose that helped pull everyone together for a successful stretch run to finish the season.

Amid the rigors of playing in the national spotlight, a little sarcasm can apparently go a long way.
