Wake Forest at Syracuse: Three things to know

  1. Syracuse has scored more than 21 points just twice in six games this season. The Orange are averaging just 19.8 points per game (86th in FBS). They head into this contest on a three-game losing streak.
  2. Wake Forest QB Sam Hartman has thrown just three touchdown passes over the Deacons’ five games. But Hartman has managed to a Wake offense that ranks 43rd nationally with an average of 417.6 total yards per game. RB Kenneth Walker has racked up 8 TDs and figures to be a problem for an Orange defense which has allowed 5.1 yards per carry and 235 yards per game.
  3. The Demon Deacons are 0-5 against the spread in their last five road games. That stretch includes a 39-30 overtime loss to Syracuse last season (Nov. 30). The Orange did not allow a Wake Forest touchdown in the first half of that contest.

Wake Forest at Syracuse: Odds, prediction, betting lines and picks

Prediction

Wake Forest 31, Syracuse 24

Money line (ML)

Peg the Orange with a better defense than what is indicated by most of their surface numbers. A bit of regression in Syracuse’s third-down efficiency and with Wake’s red-zone and turnover successes, and the analytic lean toward the home side is moderate-to-strong. BACK SYRACUSE +450.

Against the spread (ATS)

Wake Forest is 1-4 ATS in their last five games at the Carrier Dome. The Deacons are 0-6-1 in their last seven games as a road favorite. Again, BACK SYRACUSE +13 (-110).

Over/Under (O/U)

The lean here is toward the Under, but not with as much conviction as the sides. Consider a partial-unit play BACKING THE UNDER 60.5 (-110).

Virginia Tech at Wake Forest: Betting odds and lines

Odds via BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated Friday at 4:45 p.m. ET.

  • Money line: Virginia Tech -358 (bet $358 to win $100) | Wake Forest +270 (bet $100 to win $270)
  • Against the spread/ATS: Virginia Tech -10.5 (-110) | Wake Forest +10.5 (-110)
  • Over/Under: 68.5 (O: -110 | U: -110)

Virginia Tech at Wake Forest: Three things to know

  1. Virginia Tech hits the road for the third time this season. The Hokies have had mixed results, both in the Tar Heel state, winning 38-31 at Duke for a non-cover as 11.5-point favorites, and losing 56-45 at North Carolina as 3.5-point underdogs. The Over is 2-0 in their previous two road outings.
  2. Wake Forest is coming off a resounding 40-23 win over Virginia, comfortably covering as a 2.5-point home favorite, and it’s 2-1 straight up and 3-0 ATS in three games at Truist Field this season. The Demon Deacons only loss at home was to Clemson, 37-13, in the opener, cashing as 34-point dogs. The Over has hit in three in a row for the Deacs, too.
  3. Wake Forest has had an opportunistic defense, creating six takeaways to rank ninth in the nation, while turning it over just once on offense for a solid plus-5 turnover margin. Virginia Tech is also in the positive with a plus-3 ratio.

Virginia Tech at Wake Forest: Odds, prediction, betting lines and picks

Prediction

Virginia Tech 40, Wake Forest 34

Money line (ML)

Virginia Tech (-358) should be able to ease past Wake Forest (+270), but it will be a dogfight to the end. Laying nearly three times your potential return is risky. AVOID.

Against the spread (ATS)

WAKE FOREST +10.5 (-110) is a sound play at home, as it’s a perfect 3-0 ATS. Virginia Tech -10.5 (-110) has yet to cover on the road, and the Demon Deacons really haven’t even been close to cashing away from Blacksburg. This one has one-score game written all over it, as the Deacs have been a surprising out this season despite their top receiver (and player) opting out.

Over/Under (O/U)

The OVER 68.5 (-110) is a big number, but that’s because each of these teams have rolled up huge offensive totals. The Gobblers have hit the Over three times in four outings, averaging 41.5 points per game on the road while yielding 48.5 PPG. The Deacs have scored 40 or more points in three in a row, and they have hit the Over in three in a row. Look for a track meet.
