7 players the Titans should sign following cut day

We look at seven players the Titans should pursue.

Tuesday marked the deadline for each NFL team to cut their roster down to 53 players.

That means every team had difficult decisions to make, including the Tennessee Titans. The Titans’ final roster includes surprises and omits a few players that many fans and analysts have predicted to be on it.

For example, the team’s initial 53-man roster includes five tight ends, a whopping seven inside linebackers, and just four corners and three running backs.

Of course, this roster will change again before the regular season kicks off. With every team cutting 30+ players, the Titans will see if any of those players fit on their roster.

Now, let’s identify seven players who were released or waived who could fit on this Titans’ roster.

D’Onta Foreman, RB

D”Onta Foreman was released by the Cleveland Browns, and the veteran should interest the Titans. Foreman impressed as a member of the Titans in 2021, taking 133 carries for 566 yards.

Since that time, Foreman has spent a season with the Carolina Panthers and a season with the Chicago Bears. The veteran had hoped to latch on with the Browns but was unable to secure a spot on the final roster.

The Titans only kept three RBs on the roster after Hassan Haskins and Jabari Small failed to impress. With Julius Chestnut as the lone backup option, the team should consider bringing in Foreman to bolster the depth.

Carl Lawson, EDGE

Carl Lawson could not crack the Dallas Cowboys’ roster, and the veteran will once again hit the open market. Lawson once signed a three-year, $45 million deal with the New York Jets, but injuries have prevented the defender from being consistent.

In 2023, Lawson was limited to six games and accumulated just five tackles. However, he had a productive pass-rushing season as recently as 2022, when he racked up seven sacks.

The Titans only kept four edge rushers on the final roster, so Lawson would provide a solid depth addition. Shane Ray was not one of the edge rushers kept around, so a veteran presence would be nice.

CJ Henderson, CB

The Titans gave up on one former first-round cornerback, so why not take a gamble on another? The Jacksonville Jaguars drafted CJ Henderson in the top ten of the 2020 NFL draft, and his career has not gone according to plan thus far.

Henderson was traded to the Carolina Panthers after just one season in Jacksonville, and the corner’s play never lived up to his draft pedigree. However, the Titans only kept four corners, and a young corner like Henderson may fit in perfectly behind L’Jarius Sneed and Chidobe Awuzie.

Jackson Carman, OL

Jackson Carman is another highly-drafted player who has disappointed to this point in the NFL. Carman was a second-round selection by the Cincinnati Bengals in the 2021 NFL Draft but has only started in six games.

The Bengals cut bait on Carman, but the Titans could be interested. On the initial roster, the team kept John Ojukwu and Jaelyn Duncan as backup tackles, which shouldn’t inspire much confidence.

Perhaps Brian Callahan saw enough during his time with Carman to take a chance.

Travis Bell, DT

Travis Bell is another former Bengal who should interest the Titans. The defensive lineman was a seventh-round draft pick of the Chicago Bears last year but has already played on three different rosters.

However, Bell is still an intriguing prospect. The 6’0″, 310-pound DT was the first player to be drafted out of Kennesaw State and flashed preseason ability as a run-stuffer and pass-rusher.

The Titans do not have much depth on the defensive line. Keondre Coburn is the only reserve on the roster right now, so high-upside additions would be smart.

Green Bay Packers offensive lineman Royce Newman (70). Mandatory Credit: Jeff Hanisch-USA TODAY Sports

Royce Newman, G

As mentioned above, the Titans’ backup offensive linemen don’t inspire much confidence. The team kept Daniel Brunskill and Andrew Rupcich to back up on the interior after Saahdiq Charles’s retirement threw a wrench in the team’s plans.

Currently, Dillon Radunz is slated to start at right guard, with Brunskill and Rupcich as backup options. Adding Royce Newman would give the team a capable option who could fill in at a moment’s notice.

Newman has delivered acceptable results in 24 career starts. The lineman would greatly improve the Titans’ depth.

Zach Evans, RB

Zach Evans was a surprise cut by the Los Angeles Rams. The 2023 sixth-round pick impressed in the preseason, scoring two TDs in the finale.

Evans will now hit the waiver wire after just one season in LA. As mentioned previously, the Titans could use reinforcements at RB. Even though Tony Pollard and Tyjae Spears will get the bulk of the carries, having just one depth option probably isn’t wise.

Evans would be a high-upside claim by the Titans, providing insurance in case Pollard or Spears get injured.

Where are the Dolphins in the waiver wire order?

Hundreds of players will hit the waiver wire tomorrow, but the Dolphins won’t get first dibs if they choose to put in any claims.

More than 1,000 NFL players received bad news Tuesday when they were told they didn’t make a 53-man roster. The majority of them will hit the waiver wire Wednesday.

If those players — which will include several players cut by the Miami Dolphins — don’t get claimed, they are free to sign with a practice squad. Players who are claimed are immediately on a 53-man roster.

But if the Dolphins choose to put in a claim for a waived player, they won’t get first dibs. For the first three weeks of the season, the waiver wire order is determined by each team’s final record in 2023. That means the Dolphins, along with other teams that made the playoffs last year, are near the bottom:

  1. Carolina Panthers
  2. Washington Commanders
  3. New England Patriots
  4. Arizona Cardinals
  5. Los Angeles Chargers
  6. New York Giants
  7. Tennessee Titans
  8. Atlanta Falcons
  9. Chicago Bears
  10. New York Jets
  11. Minnesota Vikings
  12. Denver Broncos
  13. Las Vegas Raiders
  14. New Orleans Saints
  15. Indianapolis Colts
  16. Seattle Seahawks
  17. Jacksonville Jaguars
  18. Cincinnati Bengals
  19. Los Angeles Rams
  20. Pittsburgh Steelers
  21. Miami Dolphins
  22. Philadelphia Eagles
  23. Cleveland Browns
  24. Dallas Cowboys
  25. Green Bay Packers
  26. Tampa Bay Buccaneers
  27. Houston Texans
  28. Buffalo Bills
  29. Detroit Lions
  30. Baltimore Ravens
  31. San Francisco 49ers
  32. Kansas City Chiefs

What that means is that if multiple teams put in a claim on a player, the team that is highest in the order gets first priority. For example, if the Arizona Cardinals and Baltimore Ravens both put in claims for Erik Ezukanma, the Cardinals would be awarded the recently waived wide receiver thanks to their 4-13 record last season.

Shemar Jean-Charles is the first Saints cornerback to be let go

In a surprising move, Shemar Jean-Charles was one of the first Saints cornerbacks to be let go. He’s had a strong summer:

Which backup would the New Orleans Saints keep at cornerback? Rezjohn Wright, who spent last season on the practice squad? Shemar Jean-Charles, who climbed the depth chart and filled in for Marshon Lattimore at training camp? Or Rico Payton, who consistently popped off the screen in the preseason games?

In a surprise move, it was Jean-Charles to be let go as one of the team’s first roster cuts on Tuesday. He practiced ahead of his peers for much of the summer and more than held his own in the preseason, and he was a popular choice for 53-man predictions around the Saints beat.

That’s not to say this is the end of the road. If he clears waivers, Jean-Charles could simply re-sign with the practice squad later this week. But that could be a big “if.” Quality cornerbacks are in demand and all it would take is another team submitting a waiver claim to put him out of reach.

But this may speak more to the strength of the position in New Orleans than any flaws in Jean-Charles’ game. Payton was targeted 13 times and only allowed 3 receptions. That matters. The Saints are deeper at cornerback than any other position on their roster and good players are going to be let go, including Jean-Charles. Hopefully he can return but if not, well; he’s earned the opportunity to compete for a better job somewhere else.

Commanders claim kicker Riley Patterson off waivers

The Commanders claimed 24-year-old Riley Patterson off waivers.

Have the Washington Commanders found themselves a kicker? On Wednesday, the Commanders claimed kicker Riley Patterson off waivers.

The addition of Patterson gives Washington two kickers in training camp, as he joins Ramiz Ahmed in a competition to be the kicker in 2024.

Patterson, 24, was waived by the Jacksonville Jaguars on Monday after signing with them in February. It was Patterson’s second stint in Jacksonville.

After a standout career at Memphis, Patterson signed with the Minnesota Vikings as an undrafted free agent in 2021. He was released with an injury settlement that summer. Patterson signed with the New England’s practice squad in October, and in November, the Lions signed him off the Patriots’ practice squad.

Patterson enjoyed some success with the Lions, even winning the NFC Special Teams Player of the Week award once. The Lions waived him during final cuts the following summer.

The Jaguars claimed Patterson off waivers, and he spent the entire 2022 season as their kicker. Patterson made 30 of his 35 field-goal attempts that season and 36 of his 37 point-after attempts. Jacksonville traded Patterson back to Detroit after it signed Brandon McManus, coincidentally enough.

If you recall, the Commanders signed McManus in March but released him this summer due to sexual assault allegations.

The Lions waived Patterson in December 2023 and he was claimed by the Cleveland Browns for the remainder of last season.

For his career, Patterson has kicked in 39 games, making 59 of 67 attempts (88.1%) and 93 of 97 PATs (95.9%). He has made three of his six field goals from 50 yards or more and has a 47% touchback rate.

Patterson is young, and kickers don’t often stick until they’ve bounced around a bit. That’s certainly what the Commanders are hoping. Ahmed has been shaky through the first week of training camp.

Steelers claim former Falcons DT off waivers

The Steelers selected Willington Previlon off of waivers.

On Friday, news came down from the league’s official transaction wire that the Pittsburgh Steelers had claimed former Atlanta Falcons defensive tackle Willington Previlon off waivers.

Previlon is well-traveled. He first entered the league as an undrafted free agent out of Rutgers when he was signed by the Green Bay Packers in 2020. Since then he’s been on and off of multiple practice squads including the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Dallas Cowboys and most recently the Atlanta Falcons.

The Steelers also announced on Friday they had signed free-agent wide receiver Jacob Coleman to a one-year contract. The Steelers 90-man training camp roster is set with the team preparing to report to Latrobe on July 24.

Chiefs activate WR Mecole Hardman from injured reserve

Chiefs activate WR Mecole Hardman from injured reserve

The Kansas City Chiefs made significant roster changes on Saturday before their New Year’s Eve matchup with the Cincinnati Bengals. A veteran offensive spark is set to return, while a defensive role player was waived.

Mecole Hardman will officially be off of injured reserve and have his questionable status from the latest injury report removed ahead of Week 17. Hardman had been out of action since his Week 11 injury against the Philadelphia Eagles. The thumb injury suffered in the Monday night loss in November was initially believed not to be serious since he did return in the second half. The questionable status lifted from his name is a positive trend that he could see action on Sunday.

The Chiefs also activated practice squad players, running back Keaontay Ingram and defensive tackle Mike Pennel. Defensive tackle Matt Dickerson was waived as part of the roster moves on Saturday; he appeared in eleven games this season as a reserve defensive lineman. The 28-year-old could potentially return to the team’s practice squad if another team does not claim him.

Hardman fills an immediate void left by Kadarius Toney and Skyy Moore, both dealing with injuries. He should also have a presence on special teams in the punt return game.
