Reminders of a loss to New Hampshire two decades ago continue to haunt Greg Schiano: ‘It’s about being ready to play and win this game’

Wanger won’t be overlooked by head coach Greg Schiano and his Rutgers football team.

PISCATAWAY, N.J. — Four years into his first tenure with Rutgers football, Greg Schiano thought he had turned a corner with the program. A loss to a lower-level opponent saw that all crash down around him, a feeling that Schiano remembers all too well nearly two decades later.

It was Sept. 11, 2004, and Rutgers had just come off a 19-14 win over Michigan State to kick-start their season. This was supposed to be the year that Rutgers went to a bowl game, what with the talent level in the program at an all-time high.

Instead, a Week 2 loss to New Hampshire, then a 1-AA program in what is now currently considered the FCS, derailed everything that Schiano had built that season.

The Scarlet Knights finished the 2004 season 4-7 with five straight losses to end the year. And with FCS program Wagner coming to SHI Stadium on Saturday afternoon, it is clear that Schiano isn’t going to take this one for granted.

When asked about his plans to heavily rotate his team for what is a supposed big win by Rutgers, Schiano on Wednesday had none of it. He didn’t want to talk about getting his depth players into a game that he says is by no means a gimme.

“You know that – as a coach I don’t know. No, I don’t know that, you know, to assume that would be…I probably thought that that night I took the field against New Hampshire – how I was going to do all that,” Schiano said of planning for a big win.

“And I stood underneath the fireworks in the skylight and we just got beat and I had to listen to the fireworks, right? So when it’s time, if it’s time then we’ll do it. Right now. It’s about being ready to play and win this game.”

Following a weekend loss at No. 2 Michigan, Rutgers is currently 3-1 (1-1 Big Ten) with two Power Five wins already on their resume.

[lawrence-related id=30531,30526]

Last year, Rutgers beat Wagner 66-7 to improve to 2-0 at the time. It was a game where a number of players up and down the roster got a chance to play.

This year, however, Wagner is indeed a far better product on the field. Last week, they had three players named to the weekly conference accolades.

[lawrence-related id=30508]

They are 2-2 and are deeper and overall more talented than the team that struggled last year at Rutgers.

“Wagner is a much improved football team. They are on a two-game winning streak. They sit on top of their league,” Schiano said.

“We need to take care of Rutgers, that’s what we need to worry about. We had enough mistakes in the game and practice that we just need to keep working on us and eventually, we’ll get to be a good team.”

Rutgers football vs Wagner: Five predictions to a Rutgers’ Week 5 victory

Rutgers football will play its 1,400th game in program history on Saturday. Here are the five predictions to a Rutgers’ victory for Week 5.

On Saturday, Rutgers football will play game No. 1,400 in program history. The Scarlet Knights will face off against the Wagner Seahawks in their Week 5 matchup.

Last week, the Scarlet Knights lost to No. 2 Michigan 31-7 in their Week 4 matchup. Rutgers quarterback Gavin Wimsatt connected early to wide receiver Christian Dremel for a 69-yard touchdown pass, but the Scarlet Knight would go scoreless for the remainder of the game.

[lawrence-related id=30504]

Rutgers will look to bounce back on offense in Week 5 as the Scarlet Knights scored touchdowns on its first four drives in the first and second halves the last time they played Wagner, beating the Seahawks 66-7.

Rutgers head coach Greg Schiano is 9-3 in September games since 2021 as the Scarlet Knights try to improve 4-1 on the season when they host the Seahawks on Saturday. Below are the five predictions for Rutgers’ Week 5 matchup against Wagner.

Five Takeaways from Rutgers dominant victory over Wagner

Rutgers moves to 2-0 after a dominant victory over Wagner. Check out the keys to the game for the Scarlet Knights

Week 2 of the Rutgers football season is in the books. Chapter 2 of the story for the 2022 Scarlet Knights will be titled: Unsurprising Dominance.

Rutgers took on the Wagner in their home opener on Saturday and finished a rout of the FCS program, 66-7. In a game being billed as the “Back to the Birthplace Game,” fans got to see a parade and participate in other pregame activities. There were also fireworks scheduled for after the contest, but fans in attendance at SHI stadium saw some early fireworks on the gridiron.

Rutgers got out to an early lead, closing the first quarter out with a 28-0 lead and piled on throughout the rest of the game while head coach Greg Schiano moved into the top spot for coaching wins at Rutgers University. Even though they struggled offensively at times in Week 1, this result is surprising to no one. Wagner came into the contest losers of 21 straight contests – their last win coming back in September of 2019.

The thing to watch in this one was to see if they could clean up some of the sloppy play and mistakes that led to such a close Week 1 win over Boston College. Let’s take a look at the keys to the game from the dominant Week 2 victory for the Scarlet Knights.

Gallery: Rutgers football rolls over Wagner to move to 2-0

Rutgers football is now 2-0 with a big win over Wagner.

PISCATAWAY, N.J. — Rutgers football improved to 2-0 on the season with an emphatic 66-7 win over Wagner. It was a complete and thorough performance from Rutgers, with Saturday’s output marking the post points ever scored by a Rutgers team coached by Greg Schiano.

It was a big first quarter from Rutgers football as the Scarlet Knights got on the scoreboard with 7:52 left in the first quarter via a Kyle Monangai two-yard touchdown run. Then touchdown throws by Evan Simon, Gavin Wimsatt and Johnny Langan on their next three possessions staked Rutgers out to a 28-0 lead.

Rutgers turned the ball over once, a second quarter interception from quarterback Gavin Wimsatt. It was the only blemish on the afternoon from what was overall a clean performance from the Scarlet Knights.

Rutgers will play Temple (1-1) next Saturday to close out the out-of-conference slate of games.

Check out the best photos from Saturday’s big win over Wagner. Rutgers football is now undefeated through the first two games of the season.

Watch: Johnny Langan throws deep TD pass

Watch: Johnny Langan does it all as he throws a 43 yard touchdown pass

Tight end/quarterback/jack-of-all-trades Johnny Langan made an impact once again during Rutgers football’s game against Wagner. This time, in the passing game.

Normally listed as a tight end, Langan often sees action under center as the quarterback when the Scarlet Knights are in the wildcat formation. Most people expected Saturday’s game to be a blow out which is the perfect time to try some things you might not normally rely on in tightly contested matchups.

Langan took his second direct snap in a row to close out the first quarter. After a three-yard run on first down, he looked to pass on second-and-seven with his team up 21-0. He made the most of this one, airing it out down the field for a 43 yard touchdown to wide receiver Isaiah Washington to extend the Rutgers lead.

The senior utility man’s arm strength was on full display, throwing the ball over 40 yards in the air before Washington hauled it in and took the ball the last few yards for six. The ensuing point-after put the Scarlet Knights up 28-0.

[lawrence-related id=18661]

Showing what he can do in all facets of the offense, Langan wasn’t done as he also caught a touchdown pass before the half was done. Rutgers went into halftime leading 38-7. Langan finished a strong half with 43 passing yards and a touchdown, 10 receiving yards and a touchdown, and added eight rushing yards for good measure.

History of the Matchup: Rutgers football vs. non-FBS schools

Rutgers plays Wagner on Saturday. Check out their recent history vs. non-FBS schools

Rutgers football is off to a 1-0 start for the third season in a row. The Scarlet Knights barely scratched and clawed out a 22-21 victory in Week 1 vs. Boston College. Now, they are preparing for a matchup against the Wagner Seahawks.

The Scarlet Knights take on the FCS program in what is being billed as the “Back to the Birthplace Game.” There will be celebrations and a parade prior to the game and a fireworks celebration after the game. Based on how these two teams are currently built, you will see some fireworks on the gridiron inside SHI Stadium as well. Wagner comes in on a 21 game losing streak that dates back to September of 2019. Usually, fans will look for any hint on why their team will win and history is a good place to start.

Well, this is the first time these programs have ever faced off so there is no history to look at. In fact, it is the first time Wagner has ever played against a Big Ten opponent. I would expect Rutgers to dominate this matchup, so no need to attempt to read the proverbial tea leaves to find out how Rutgers might come out on top. It is almost a given.

[lawrence-related id=18558]

Instead, we are going to pivot to show how the Scarlet Knights have performed against non-FBS schools in the past. Rutgers has not always been a powerful team. There were some dark years in both ancient and recent history. However, they have taken care of business overall against non-FBS schools. They have a 453-339-33 versus non-FBS programs all-time. Against such programs that they have only played one time, the Knights are 29-15-1.

Rutgers has not lost to a FCS opponent since 2004, when they dropped a matchup against New Hampshire, 35-24. They should win this week’s matchup handily, but let’s take a quick look back at the last decade-plus of Rutgers vs. non-FBS schools.
