NC State statistical leaders through one game

Does anyone on this list concern you?

NC State is having a very peculiar season with its schedule. It opened the 2023 season with a win over independent UConn and now will face a second straight independent in Notre Dame. It then will face VMI before playing its ACC schedule except for one game against Marshall. Talk about one quirk after another.

Like the Irish, the Wolfpack have a quarterback finishing out his eligibility with them after spending the remainder of his career at a different school. In this case, the Wolfpack’s quarterback spent the previous five seasons at Virginia and even has experience facing the Irish (including on this writer’s wedding day). Of course, that’s only one player. There are many others who could give the Irish fits in what many are saying is their first real test of the season.

The Wolfpack have played only one game, but here’s who you might want to look out for when they face the Irish:

Wake Forest vs VMI Game Preview

Why VMI Will Win

How much has the Wake Forest defense improved?

It struggled last year – to be nice – against the teams that could run, and VMI will try to get its ground game going early with leading rusher Korey Bridy back working behind a decent front five.

QB Seth Morgan threw too many picks, but he did a good job of keeping the chains moving. This might not be a high-octane powerhouse of an attack, but the balance will be there, the defense should get a few good plays out of a secondary coming off a solid 2021, and …

Week 1 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Wake Forest Will Win

The VMI pass rush won’t be there, and that’s going to quickly turn into a big, big problem.

The Demon Deacons need this game to break in QB Michael Griffis – with star Sam Hartman out indefinitely with a non-football related medical condition – and he should get plenty of time to work. The O will keep going fast, it’ll keep the Keydets on their heels, and there’s a good chance it puts this away after a few drives if everything works right.

As decent as the VMI offense will be this season, it’s going to dominate the clock. Against Wake Forest, taking advantage of the time of possession battle is a must, but that’s not happening here.

Week 1 Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews, Thursday & Friday

What’s Going To Happen

Hartman is a star for the attack, but the Wake Forest offense has the parts to keep on moving until he gets back.

The Demon Deacons will win on the lines, they’ll be balanced when they need to be, and they won’t take any big chances – they won’t need to.

VMI will come up with a few scoring drives, but not nearly enough of them to keep up with the pace Wake Forest will set right away.

Patrick Ashford named VMI’s wide receivers coach

Patrick Ashford named VMI’s wide receivers coach.

LEXINGTON — Former University of Tennessee holder Patrick Ashford is joining Virginia Military Institute‘s coaching staff of the Southern Conference.

Ashford becomes the Keydets’ wide receivers coach. He spent the last three seasons serving as a graduate assistant at Vanderbilt and working with the Commodores’ tight ends.

Before arriving at Vanderbilt, Ashford was quarterbacks coach at Tennessee-Martin and an offensive assistant at Austin Peay.

Ashford appeared in 26 games for the Vols, serving as Tennessee’s holder during the 2014-15 seasons. As a holder against Missouri in 2014, Ashford completed a 31-yard pass to Alex Ellis for a touchdown on a fake field goal.

He played quarterback at Morristown West High School in Morristown, Tenn. and was a member of Carson-Newman’s football team as a back-up quarterback and holder in 2011 before transferring to UT.
