Matt Rhule has high expectations for rising freshman

Vincent Shavers was one of the top players in the Miami area.

Nebraska football head coach Matt Rhule has been impressed by one freshman in particular over the course of preseason. Linebacker Vincent Shavers stands out as the Huskers look for more depth at the position.

Shavers was a December addition to the Huskers. He officially committed and signed with Nebraska on December 20 after flipping from the Miami Hurricanes following a visit the prior weekend.

Shavers was a decorated high school player, recording more than 170 tackles in his prep career. According to his biography on the Nebraska Athletics website, he had 46 tackles, 14 tackles for loss, and seven sacks as a senior last season.

Now, it appears he is making an early impact on Nebraska’s football defense. The linebacker room is undoubtedly one to watch, with a mix of younger players and transfers in the room and the usual upperclassmen. Rhule likes what he has seen from the freshman, as Husker247’s Brian Christopherson noted.

While talking about guys possibly filling in with the Wright absence, Rhule said, “I got no doubts about V9. There might be a freshman moment here or there but I got no doubts about him. None.”

It will undoubtedly be interesting to see what role he plays. He has the ability to come down and make a tackle, as well as provide a pass-rushing presence off the edge. He may not have a significant role now, but he is setting himself up to be a big part of the Huskers’ future.

Cornhuskers flip: Former Miami linebacker Vincent Shavers commits to Nebraska

Vincent Shavers commits to Nebraska on National Signing Day.

Days after opening up his recruitment, three-star linebacker Vincent Shavers committed to Nebraska. Shavers had been committed to Miami till this past weekend but is now heading to the Big Ten.

The commitment from Shavers, a three-star recruit, comes after he took an official visit to Nebraska over the weekend. It points to another great job of closing the deal by Nebraska head coach Matt Rhule.

The 6-foot-1, 205-pound linebacker from Miami Central (Miami, Florida) also held offers from Arizona State, Cincinnati, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Kentucky, Louisville and Rutgers among others.

In eight games this season, Shavers had 46 total tackles, seven sacks and a pass defended.

It was certainly a good recruiting weekend for Nebraska as they landed five-star quarterback Dylan Raiola over the weekend. Raiola had previously been committed to Georgia but after his official visit to the Cornhuskers, he flipped to the Big Ten program.

Two big flips for Nebraska…certainly not a bad weekend for Nebraska.

Former Miami commit trending toward Nebraska

A former Miami commit appears to be trending toward the Nebraska Cornhuskers.

A former Miami commit appears to be trending toward the Nebraska Cornhuskers. Vincent Shavers is a three-star linebacker out of Miami Gardens, Florida.

Shavers had been committed to the Hurricanes since May 19 but took a trip to Nebraska over the weekend. His father, Vincent Shavers Sr., tweeted about his son’s excitement over his time in Lincoln.

“I like to thank Coach Rhule and his amazing staff for the hospitality they showed me and my family on the OV. It was beyond more than I expected. The wait is over. LETS GO BIG RED!!!!”

CaneSport’s Stephen Wagner said that Shavers showed a considerable improvement in his ability during the 2023 season.

“Shavers is faster, stronger, more physical and has a much more thorough understanding of his defensive responsibilities after spending the 2023 calendar year under the tutelage of Central head coach Jube Joseph.”

The linebacker will make his official announcement at his signing ceremony on Wednesday at 8:00 a.m. CT.
