Reporters, former players remember former Cardinals HC Vince Tobin

Many had kind words about the Cardinals’ former head coach.

Former Arizona Cardinals head coach Vince Tobin died at age 79. He coached the team from 1996-2000, took them to the playoffs for the first time since the team moved to Arizona in 1998 and led them to their first playoff victory in 50 years.

Both former players and those who currently cover or previously covered the NFL gave thoughts and memories about Tobin, who was universally known as a kind man.

Cardinals owner Michael Bidwill issues statement after Vince Tobin’s death

Bidwill offers his condolences and shares some highlights of the former head coach’s career.

The holiday week began Monday with sad news. Former Arizona Cardinals Vince Tobin died at 79 years old.

He was head coach for the team from 1996-2000 and led them to their first playoff appearance after the team moved to Arizona and their first playoff win in 50 years.

After the team announced his death, owner Michael Bidwill issued a statement.

“Our deepest condolences go out to everyone who knew and loved Vince Tobin, and in particular his wife Kathy and their family.

As head coach of the Cardinals, his steady leadership was a constant and a big part of the success the team enjoyed duringhis tenure. His football legacy with us is highlighted by the thrilling 1998 season, return to the postseason, and upset playoff win at Dallas. He will also be remembered for his instrumental role in key decisions like drafting Jake Plummer and Pat Tillman. More than that, he was a consummate family man and always a class act who positively impacted everyone he encountered.”

Former Cardinals coach Vince Tobin dies at 79 years old

Tobin, the Cardinals’ head coach from 1996-2000, led the Cardinals to their first playoff appearance in Arizona and first playoff win in 50 years.

The start of the holiday week began with some sadness for the Arizona Cardinals organization. Retired AZCentral sportswriter Kent Somers tweeted that former Arizona Cardinals head coach Vince Tobin had died at age 79.

The team later announced the death.

Tobin was Arizona’s head coach from 1996-2000. He went 28-43 but, in 1998, led the Cardinals to the playoffs for the first time since moving to Arizona. They beat the Dallas Cowboys for their first playoff win in 50 years before losing to the Minnesota Vikings.

His career in the NFL as a coach spanned from 1986-2001. He was defensive coordinator for the Chicago Bears from 1986-1992. He was defensive coordinator for the Indianapolis Colts from 1994-1995 before getting hired by the Cardinals. He was fired midseason in 2000 and then was defensive coordinator for the Detroit Lions in 2001. In 2004, he was a special assistant for the Green Bay Packers.
