The defenses should shine in this battle, and considering Barcelona held Real Madrid to just 7 shots, their defense is legit. Barcelona is led by veteran GK Marc-André ter Stegen and is captained by experienced M Sergio Busquets.

There’s absolutely no doubt that Liverpool is the more talented team. However, it hasn’t played well when up in a 2-game series and on the road for the second leg.

It was up 2-0 on Inter and lost 1-0. It was up 3-1 on Benfica and drew 3-3. As for Villarreal, it has 2 league losses at home in 17 games.

Sure, Liverpool is a different beast, but it may be looking to possession more than usual which could weaken its desire to push ahead for a winning goal.

Villarreal drew Bayern Munich 1-1 and beat Juventus 3-0 at home. It hasn’t played well in league play on the road, but it has been terrific at home in both UEFA action and La Liga action.

I expect that to continue Tuesday as well. I’d rather play the draw than the Villarreal money line, though as I do expect Liverpool to keep the energy and poise high.

Over/Under (O/U)

BET the UNDER 2.5 (+122).

We gave this out for Leg 1 at +120, and it connected with the Liverpool 2-0 win.

I again expect Liverpool’s top-tier defense, led by D Virgil van Djik, one of the world’s best defenders, to limit Villarreal. Although Villarreal is better at home, it had zero shots on goal in the first leg.

Villarreal sits 7th on the La Liga table and is led by its defense which allows just .94 goals per game. It is led in scoring by 25-year-old Dutch F Arnaut Groeneveld, who has 10 goals in 23 league matches played.

I wouldn’t bet on them at -280, but I certainly wouldn’t bet against them either. Typically, I then look at the “both teams to score” odds, and you can get both teams to not score at -135, a price I don’t find much value in.

I’d prefer to play the total here.

Over/Under (O/U)

BET the UNDER 2.5 (+120).

Villarreal has proven during its Champions League run that it is capable defensively.

In league play, it’s continued that trend. Against Bayern Munich, one of the best-attacking teams in the world, it allowed 1 goal through  2 games.

It drew Real Madrid, who City allowed 3 goals to Tuesday, 0-0 in both league matches and also drew Chelsea 1-1 through 120 before losing in penalty kicks. Its defense is sound and should be able to limit Liverpool.

The same can be said of the home side as Liverpool has allowed .67 goals per game in league play. Against Inter and Atletico Madrid, arguably the two  best teams is has played in the Champions League, the Under 2.5 was 3-1.

This match should be a bit more slow paced for Liverpool than it was against Benfica, and for the value, I like the Under.

This is great price considering there were only 5 shots on target last game. With Bayern at home, there’s a strong possibility it shuts out Villarreal. Six of Villarreal’s last seven games have involved one team not scoring.

Having held Bayern to just 4 shots on target, Villareal has a chance to do it again. Bayern has had a side not score in 4 straight matches. At the +102 price, it’s a good risk to take.

The first time around, this was the best play, but there were 34 shots.

Villarreal’s defense has held up so far in Champions League play, having given up just 1 goal in 3 knockout stage games. It is allowing just over a goal per game in league play as well, so it has had success for much of the season.

Bayern’s attack is elite, and by itself is worthy of being skeptical about an Under.

Juventus has proven so far this season that it is the better side, winning the group and defeating a top EPL side. It also has the star power.

However, on the road, I can’t fully back Juventus. It is just 6-5-2 on the road in Serie A action. It was also destroyed 4-0 by Chelsea in its second group-stage meeting. While it did manage 5 wins, 3 were by just 1 goal.

As for Villarreal, it is coming off a draw with Real Madrid, the best side in La Liga.

It also has 7 wins in 13 home league matches. Villarreal held the top-scoring La Liga side to 0 goals, and it allowed just 9 goals in 6 Champions League matches.

Overall, these two sides match up well, both with solid defenses and capable attacks. Given that, a DRAW (+205) is the best way to play the outcome of this Round of 16 battle.

Over/Under (O/U)

If there’s one thing that both teams have proven in Champions League play and their respective national league play, it is defend. Villarreal allowed 9 in 6 games, whereas Juventus allowed just 6.

“LEAN” on VILLARREAL (+180) as it’s the more competent side at the moment. The last time these two teams took the pitch, it was a 95th-minute Ronaldo goal that sent United away with three.

United was actually outshot in the first meeting, and with Pogba and Mason Greenwood (one of the team’s top scorers) out, getting the ball to the elite forward is going to be easier said than done.

Villarreal is slipping in league play, winning just 3 of 13 games, but it also lost just three while recording seven draws. While its form hasn’t been great it hasn’t lost four of its last five games like Man U.

It’s just not a good idea to back United right now. This is a more a fade against United than a bet on Villarreal.

Over/Under (O/U)

BET on the UNDER 2.5 (-107) as Villarreal doesn’t have an elite offensive side and their opponent is missing two of its key distributors. Man U being without Greenwood and Pogba is huge, and it means the serves to Ronaldo may not be at the same level as normal.

Scott McTominay and Nemanja Matić just haven’t done a good enough job in league action, and with those key pieces against out, they’ll be asked to do too much.

Villarreal has scored just 15 goals in 13 La Liga matches and has scored 5 goals in four UCL matches, so they aren’t necessarily a thriving offense either.

With that in mind, I’d shy away from betting on goals in this one. Both teams played a scoreless first half the last time they took the field.
