We already did this a week ago and Villanova didn’t have too many problems handling the St. John’s high-powered offense.

The Wildcats won on the free throw line, they did a nice job from the field, and they went off from three. It also helped that the defense that’s been solid all year at guarding the three kept the Red Storm from doing anything outside.

Why St. John’s Will Win

It still manages to stay in games when it’s not hitting from the outside.

It was lousy from three against Villanova – hitting just 4-of-21 tries – and it was still sort of around in the 11-point loss. It couldn’t hit a thing a Butler a few days ago and won.

There are a whole lot of assists and a whole lot of points off of mistakes to find other ways to score when the outside shots aren’t dropping. It’s a fun team that knows hot to get up and down the floor. Even though Villanova plays a good style of D, the first time around was an aberration.

St. John’s isn’t scoring just 62 points this time around, and now it’s in Madison Square Garden. So …

What’s Going To Happen

Just how much can the St. John’s offense get going? When it scored more than 83 points it’s 9-0, and when it gets more than 75 it’s 12-2.

Villanova has only allowed more than 75 points five times, and it only gave up more than 83 once – and it took overtime for UCLA to get there.

The Red Storm will be far stronger offensively than they were the first time around against Villanova, but they’re not going to come up with enough over the finishing kick.

The Wildcats will come back roaring in the final moments when they need to.

The Red Storm can’t hang with Villanova shot for shot, but they can hit from three, and they can move.

They can’t force mistakes against one of the most careful teams in college basketball, but they can hit the offensive glass hard and they’re fantastic at coming up with steals – just a few will be okay.

St. John’s can move the ball around well, too, and they come up with a lot more assists than Villanova does. To make this work, the team has to move, keep moving, and it has to make this a shootout.

Why Villanova Will Win

Villanova has allowed more than 75 points just four times.

Granted, it was 1-3 in those games, but the team has a way of making everyone bog down a bit and relying on the defense that forces teams to hit fewer than 40% of their shots.

But it’s this simple. To beat Villanova you have to be able to guard the three. St. John’s is one of the worst teams in America at three-point defense.

You have to keep the Wildcats from getting to the free throw line, because no one shoots better from the stripe. St. John’s is gets hit with a whole lot of fouls.

St. John’s should be able to make this interesting if it can somehow generate a whole slew of points in transition, and those have to come off of rebounds.

There won’t be enough of them.

Villanova will be too good from the outside, St. John’s will lose big in the free throw battle, and an entertaining game will become a bit out of hand late.

Why Villanova Will Win

St. John’s has been red hot, and why?

Part of the reason is an attacking defense that tries to steal everything and an offense that moves the ball around as well as anyone in the country. There’s a big problem, though.

Villanova doesn’t turn the ball over. It leads the nation with the fewest turnovers per game, hasn’t given it up more than nine times in a game since early December, and the team continues to be devastating from the outside and on the free throw line.

Basically, the Red Storm need mistakes that aren’t going to come.

Why St. John’s Will Win

St. John’s doesn’t have any problems bombing away from three. It might not be as sharp as Villanova is from the outside, but it’ll keep on pushing.

It’s fantastic at generating that extra pass to get the right shot, and while Villanova might not turn the ball over, it’ll have to deal with the pressure that should end up sparking the offense just enough to matter.

Villanova will get pushed.

St. John’s has to hit 40% from three, it has to make up for its mistakes with rebounds. In the end, its fouling issues will be the undoing.

Villanova is one of the nation’s best free-throw shooting teams. St. John’s can hit from the line, but it won’t get there as often.

Why St. John’s Will Win

Hit the boards, hit the boards, hit the boards.

St. John’s misses a whole lot of shots, but they come up with a whole lot of rebounds and should be able to outdo the the Wildcats on the glass.

This is a very good, very aggressive defensive team that generates a whole lot of steals and takeaways and is able to take teams out of their games. It has to come up with a whole lot of tough plays against the Villanova outside shooters, and it has to generate a slew of easy points.

Why Villanova Will Win

Villanova out rebounded the Red Storm in the 79-59 win just a few weeks ago, and it kept the giveaways in check.

This has been a red-hot Wildcat team over the last several games, and even when it struggled from three against Xavier, it still was able to win relatively easily.

St. John’s isn’t able to hit well enough from the field, struggling to connect on anything from three and shooting at just 41% on the season. Considering Villanova doesn’t turn the ball over enough – it leads the Big East with the fewest giveaways – it’ll once again be hard for SJU to score.

What’s Going To Happen

The Red Storm might turn up the defensive pressure from the start, but Villanova is way too careful with the ball, and it’s on way too strong of a roll. It’ll get ugly when the threes start falling for the home side in a first half run to take over the game.
