Villanova has been smoking from the field over the last few games, and goodnight if it gets to the line on a regular basis.

The Wildcats are No. 1 in the nation in free throw shooting percentage hitting 83% of their tries and they’re deadly when they make 42% from the field.

The threes are nice – of course Villanova is better when the outside shots are dropping – but again, all it takes is 42% going 15-1 with that one loss to Purdue back before Thanksgiving. However …

What’s Going To Happen

Seton Hall has been fine against hot shooting teams, at least overall from the field. It’s problem is when teams hit the three.

Villanova can do both.

Seton Hall has a good enough defense and is good enough on the glass to keep this from being a runaway home win for the Wildcats, but it’s not shooting well enough overall against the okay defenses to pull this off.

Why Villanova Will Win

When the Wildcats are on from the outside, it’s all but over.

Why did they lose to Providence? They only hit 5-of-30 from three. When they make 35% or more from the outside, they’re 14-1 on the season, and that includes when they hit 33% in the loss to Seton Hall a few weeks ago.

Seton Hall is decent defensively, but it’s 1-3 in its last four games when teams connect on 35% or more of their threes. In other words, Villanova needs to be Villanova and get hot from the outside right away.

Winning the turnover battle would be nice, too – Villanova doesn’t give the ball away, and Seton Hall does. But …

Why Seton Hall Will Win

Besides doing a decent job of stopping the Wildcats from the outside, how did Seton Hall win the first meeting? It owned the boards.

If Villanova is hitting, there aren’t a ton of rebounding chances – duh – but the it is off, the Pirates have to pounce on every opportunity. It can’t allow second chance points, and they did a great job of that in the win.

This isn’t a dominant team on the boards, but it has to clean up everything again, it has to do its part to block enough shots to matter – it leads the Big East – and it has keep pace from the field.

What’s Going To Happen

Seton Hall got Villanova the first time, but it’ll flip around this time.

Coming off the miserable performance against Providence, the Wildcats are going to bounce back in a big way with just a good stretch in the second half to pull away on the road.

Why Villanova Will Win

Seton Hall has won 11 of its last 12 games, dropping the date to Xavier at home a week ago. How did the Musketeers get it done?

Rebounds. Seton Hall got destroyed on the boards and were blown out. Overall, it’s a great rebounding team with a strong inside presence, but the Wildcats should be able to shoot their way over the D, and they should be able to hold their own on the boards.

They might be having a few issues over the last two weeks, but they don’t turn the ball over and they’re as good as any team in the country from the outside. If they get hot, Seton Hall won’t be able to keep up.

Why Seton Hall Will Win

29%. That’s what teams are shooting from three against the Seton Hall defense. It’s able to attack from the perimeter and force offenses to go inside, and then come the blocks.

The Pirates are second in the nation in blocked shots per game, and that goes along with their ability to hold up against the teams that bomb away.

Yes, Villanova is great at firing away, but Seton Hall has an explosive enough offense to go in streaks, even if it’s not coming from the outside.

What’s Going To Happen

Seton Hall might be playing a whole lot better than Villanova right now, but this is where everything starts to shift around.

The Pirates might have the defense to keep this close and make this a battle, but they’re not going to hit better than 50% from the field like Creighton and Butler did in their wins over Villanova.
