Projected top-5 pick Nikola Topić helped off court in Serbia with apparent injury

Projected top-five pick Nikola Topić was helped off the court after suffering an apparent knee injury in Game 1 of the ABA League Finals.

Projected top-five pick Nikola Topić was helped off the court on Monday after suffering an apparent left knee injury with Crvena zvezda in Game 1 of the ABA League Finals.

Topić sustained the non-contact injury in the third quarter against Partizan after landing awkwardly on the court. He remained on the ground for a few moments and eventually had to be assisted off the court to the locker room.

The 18-year-old recently returned after missing four months with a ligament injury to the same knee. The extent of the injury isn’t known or how it will affect his availability for the rest of the series.

Topić was named the ABA League Top Prospect after averaging 15 points, 5.7 assists and 3.4 rebounds on 49.8% shooting from the field in 22 games this season. He joined Nikola Jokić, Goga Bitadze and Nikola Jović as previous players to win the award.

He is projected to be a high pick after dazzling this season in a limited sample size. He brings great size to the next level and is likely more advanced than other prospects, given his professional experience in Serbia, which started when he was 16.

Teams will certainly monitor the latest setback to Topić and determine if it can potentially affect his draft stock. The severity of the injury should become known in the coming days following additional testing and examination.

The 2024 NBA draft will take place June 26-27 in New York City.

Rumor: Wizards will look to acquire another first-round pick in NBA draft

Armed with two first-round picks in the 2024 NBA draft, the Wizards are reportedly looking to acquire another selection.

Armed with two first-round picks in the 2024 NBA draft, the Washington Wizards are reportedly looking to acquire another selection, according to Michael Scotto of HoopsHype.

The Wizards were awarded the second pick on Sunday in the draft lottery after finishing with the second-worst record in the league (15-67). They also have the 26th pick in the first round, which was acquired in the trade involving Daniel Gafford at the deadline.

They have their highest draft pick since 2010 when they took John Wall with the first pick. They project to have the opportunity to add a potential franchise cornerstone with the second pick and a rotation player later in the first round at No. 26.

Washington is attempting to build through the draft and improve its core of Deni Avdija, Bilal Coulibaly, Corey Kispert, Jordan Poole and Tristan Vukcevic. The front office, led by president Michael Winger, views the upcoming draft as a great opportunity to add to the roster.

After a down season, the Wizards opted to make a change following the midseason firing of Wes Unseld Jr. The team is still in the process of identifying its next head coach, with interim coach Brian Keefe among the candidates.

The organization figures to ramp up its draft preparations following the lottery now that it knows where it will be selecting on June 26. The group will meet with prospects at the combine and host private workouts and interviews throughout the predraft process.

Draft prospect Bronny James cleared by Fitness-to-Play Panel for NBA

USC guard Bronny James has been medically cleared by a Fitness to Play Panel to be selected in the 2024 NBA draft.

USC guard Bronny James has been medically cleared by a fitness to play panel to be selected in the 2024 NBA draft, according to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN.

James was sidelined for four months last year after suffering a cardiac arrest in July. He was diagnosed with an “anatomically and functionally significant congenital heart defect.” He eventually debuted with the Trojans on Dec. 10 after missing the first 11 games of the season.

The 19-year-old was ineligible to play or practice in the NBA until receiving clearance from a panel of three physicians. The panel reportedly unanimously approved him, clearing him to participate in the draft combine this week in Chicago, Illinois.

James announced on April 5 that he would test the draft and enter the NCAA transfer portal following the departure of USC head coach Andy Enfield. He has until May 29 to either keep his name in the draft or withdraw and return to college next season for his sophomore year.

He averaged 4.8 points, 2.8 rebounds and 2.1 assists on 36.6% shooting from the field in 25 games with the Trojans. He scored in double figures three times, including a season-high 15 points and three assists on Dec. 30 in a loss to Oregon State.

James’ draft stock should become clearer after the combine. He is expected to participate in 5-on-5 scrimmages and other related on-court activities against the top prospects beginning Tuesday.

Creighton senior Ryan Kalkbrenner withdraws from NBA draft, combine

Creighton senior Ryan Kalkbrenner has withdrawn from the 2024 NBA draft and will not attend the draft combine in Chicago.

Creighton senior Ryan Kalkbrenner has withdrawn from the 2024 NBA draft and will not attend the draft combine in Chicago, Illinois, the league announced on Saturday.

Kalkbrenner declared for the draft this year while maintaining his college eligibility. He was still expected to test the predraft process after announcing on May 1 that he would utilize his fifth year of college and return to Creighton for the 2024-25 season.

The 7-footer, who also tested the draft last year, was among the 78 prospects invited to the combine this week. He will instead skip the event and be replaced by Washington State junior Jaylen Wells.

Kalkbrenner was named the Big East Defensive Player of the Year for a third straight season, averaging 17.3 points, 7.6 rebounds, 3.1 blocks and 1.3 assists on 64.6% shooting from the field. He ranked second in the country in blocks per game and seventh in field-goal percentage.

He became the third Big East player to win the award at least three times, joining Patrick Ewing (four times; 1982-1985) and Alonzo Mourning (three times; 1989-1990, 1992). He became the first Creighton player since 1985 to have at least 100 blocks in a season (107).

With their defensive anchor back, the Bluejays add No. 38 prospect Jackson McAndrew and No. 64 prospect Larry Johnson to the roster for the upcoming season. The program also signed Ty Davis, the 25th-ranked combo guard in the class.

Kansas’ Bill Self: Johnny Furphy will probably stay in the NBA draft

Furphy was named to the Big 12 All-Freshman team after averaging nine points, 4.9 rebounds and one assist on 46.6% shooting from the field.

Kansas head coach Bill Self revealed this week he believes Johnny Furphy will remain in the 2024 NBA draft after a productive freshman campaign with the Jayhawks.

Furphy, who was born in Australia, was named to the Big 12 All-Freshman team after averaging nine points, 4.9 rebounds and one assist on 46.6% shooting from the field. He scored in double figures 14 times, including a season-high 23 points and 11 rebounds on Jan. 22.

The 6-foot-9 guard declared for the draft on April 16 while maintaining his remaining college eligibility. He played a larger role for the team over the second half of the season, starting in 18 of the last 19 games, and established himself as a likely first-round pick.

Self, speaking with college basketball reporter Andy Katz in an interview that ran on X, formerly known as Twitter, isn’t expecting Furphy to return to the program next season.

Johnny probably had a better freshman year than what anyone would ever imagine, so he is in the draft. Chances are, I think, that he’ll probably stay in the draft because I think he’ll go in the first round.

Furphy is considered a potential first-round pick, given his ability to score, run the floor, finish at the rim and cut on offense. He was among the 78 prospects invited to the draft combine, which will be held May 12-19 in Chicago, Illinois.

The 19-year-old will also participate in Australia’s training camp before the 2024 Olympic Games in July. He was among the 22 players named to the preliminary roster, joining Josh Giddey, Joe Ingles, Patty Mills and Matisse Thybulle.

He has until May 29 to withdraw from the draft and return to school.

While the Jayhawks are bracing for losing Furphy, they return All-American Hunter Dickinson and starters Dajuan Harris Jr. and K.J. Adams. The program is also adding No. 11 prospect Flory Bidunga and Rylen Griffin (Alabama) and AJ Storr (Wisconsin) via the transfer portal.

Villanova guard Mark Armstrong will forgo his remaining college eligibility and remain in the 2024 NBA draft.

Villanova guard Mark Armstrong will forgo his remaining college eligibility and remain in the 2024 NBA draft, the sophomore announced Monday on Instagram.

Armstrong averaged 8.4 points, 2.4 assists and 2.3 rebounds on 41.7% shooting from the field in 34 games this past season. He led the Wildcats in assists (83) and scored in double figures 12 times, including a season-high 24 points on Jan. 15 a loss to Marquette.

The 20-year-old will leave the program after appearing in 68 over two seasons. He was voted to the Big East All-Freshmen team last year by the league coaches after averaging 5.3 points, two rebounds and one assist in 34 games.
