Texans claim CB Vernon Hargreaves off waivers

The Houston Texans claimed Tampa Bay Buccaneers cornerback Vernon Hargreaves off of waivers to bolster their injured cornerback group.

The Houston Texans continue to rebuild their cornerback group mid-season. On Wednesday, the team added corner Vernon Hargreaves off of waivers, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers released Hargreaves, 24, on Tuesday, two days after benching him for what coach Bruce Arians called a “lack of hustle.”

“After thoughtful consideration over the past few weeks, Bruce and I came to the conclusion that we needed to make this change,” Buccaneers general manager Jason Licht said in a statement. “Decisions such as this are always difficult, but I felt it was in the best interest of our team to part ways with Vernon at this time and allow him to explore other opportunities. We are disappointed that it did not work out here for Vernon and we wish him continued success moving forward.”

Hargreaves, the No. 11 selection in the 2016 NFL Draft, started the season as Tampa Bay’s top cornerback. The team accepted his $9 million fifth-year option for 2020, reflecting that notion.

A former Florida Gator, Hargreaves measures in at 5-11, 204-pounds. He ran a 4.5-second 40-yard-dash at the 2016 NFL Combine.

Hargreaves has allowed a 108.6 passer rating in coverage in 2019, per Pro Football Reference. On the season, quarterbacks have thrown 578 yards and four touchdowns to the tune of a 69.1% completion rate on him, while he has reeled in one Week 1 interception.

The Texans will absorb the rest of Hargreaves’ rookie contract after claiming him on waivers. However, they are not tied down to his $9 million price tag in 2020. Unless he suffers a serious injury, the entirety of the one-year deal is not guaranteed.

Hargreaves joins a rebuilt, youth-infused cornerback group in Houston. He will join Gareon Conley, another first-round cornerback that did not last with his original NFL team.

To make room for Hargreaves, the Texans released cornerback Briean Boddy-Calhoun.

Like Conley, Hargreaves gets a chance in Week 16 to show the Buccaneers they made a hasty mistake when the Texans play Tampa Bay on Dec. 21 at Raymond James Stadium.

‘Good Morning Football’ calls Vita Vea one of the best players we’re not talking about

See what the folks over on “Good Morning Football” had to say about Buccaneers nose tackle Vita Vea.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers finally got the proverbial monkey off their back last Sunday when they defeated the Arizona Cardinals and put an end to their four-game skid.

The Bucs entered their Week 10 contest just 2-6 after going 1-4 during a brutal five-game road trip away from Raymond James Stadium. Now, back in the friendly confines of their home stadium, the Bucs will look to keep the momentum going in Week 11 when Drew Brees and the division-leading New Orleans Saints come to town.

The Bucs secondary will have its work cut out for them as the team parted ways with cornerback and former first-round pick Vernon Hargreaves yesterday. Fortunately, for Tampa Bay, they still have the league’s best rush defense, giving up just 77.8 yards per game.

One of the big reasons they’ve been so great up front has been the play of second-year man Vita Vea. He not only played defense in their win over the Cardinals, but he saw some action on the offensive side of the ball, too.

And, according to NFL Network’s “Good Morning Football,” Vea is one of the best players in the NFL we aren’t talking about.

Take a look.

I wouldn’t be surprised to see Vea get some more looks on offense. I think Bucs fans everywhere would like to see a little Refrigerator Perry action at some point.

Former Bucs CB Vernon Hargreaves could be a player the Eagles have interest in claiming

Vernon Hargreaves could be a player the Eagles have interest in claiming

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers grew tired of Vernon Hargreaves and his antics, but could the former first-round pick be a player that the Eagles have interest in adding to the roster?

Two days after he was benched for lack of hustle, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers released starting cornerback Vernon Hargreaves on Tuesday morning.

“After thoughtful consideration over the past few weeks, Bruce and I came to the conclusion that we needed to make this change,” Buccaneer’s general manager Jason Licht said in a statement via ESPN.com. “
Hargreaves was the 11th overall pick in the 2016 draft out of the University of Florida.

Even with Cre’Von LeBlanc set to return to the roster, Hargreaves could be a good fit for an Eagles defense looking for a standout cornerback.

Hargreaves started all 16 games for the Buccaneers as a rookie, and had his best season as a pro, logging 76 tackles and two forced turnovers. The past two seasons have seen Hargreaves really struggle with injuries and inconsistency.

He missed half of his second season with a hamstring issue and all but one game last season after injuring his shoulder.

Hargreave would fit well in Jim Schwartz man to man defense, a style he was astute at coming out of college.

His physical play marvels Rasul Douglas’s style and he’s still playing on his rookie deal.

Because he was waived, Hargreaves will be subjected to the waiver process, meaning the other 31 NFL teams around the league will have an opportunity to place a claim before he can become an unrestricted free agent.

Still in his fourth-year, Hargreaves would carry a salary into 2020 of $9.954 million after the Buccaneers exercised his fifth-year option prior to the season.

Jets should take a look at former Buccaneers CB Vernon Hargreaves

The Jets need cornerback help, and 2016 first-round pick Vernon Hargreaves could be the answer.

With the Jets woefully thin at cornerback, New York should take a look at the recently-released Vernon Hargreaves III to fill a position riddled by injury and poor play.

Hargreaves could be a low-risk, high-reward move by the Jets considering his youth and potential. The former 11th overall pick in the 2016 draft only recently turned 24 and was one of the top prospects coming out of Florida just three years ago. He opened his career with a stellar rookie season with the Buccaneers (76 tackles, nine passes defended and one interception), but injuries plagued Hargreaves the past two seasons and he was ultimately cut after a brutal beginning to 2019.

Bruce Arians and the Buccaneers were dismayed by Hargreaves’ lack of enthusiasm and effort this season, culminating in Arians benching Hargreaves after he didn’t hustle on a 55-yard pass play against the Arizona Cardinals in Week 10.

“He didn’t look like he was hustling to go in for a tackle,” Arians said of the play. “He was chasing somebody across the field, and he wasn’t running fast enough.”

Hargreaves, to his credit, didn’t back down from the criticism. He took full responsibility after the game for any perceived concerns about his effort.

“If that’s what coach saw that’s what he saw,” he said. “There’s no arguing with that – I need to hustle. Point blank. End of discussion.”

Hargreaves’ production has dropped off considerably since his rookie season and he has major injury issues – he missed all but one game in 2018 with a shoulder injury and seven games in 2017 with a hamstring injury. His 2019 hasn’t been much better, as he’s allowed a 111.9 passer rating when targeted (51st among cornerbacks), 12.3 yards per reception (37th), 5.7 receptions per game (77th), a catch rate of 63.8 percent (49th) and burned on 3.8 percent of his targets (71st), per PlayerProfiler.com

Those numbers are all terrible. Sadly, they’re also better than every other Jets cornerback other than Brian Poole, who plays 61 percent of his snaps in the slot.

The Jets need a player like Hargreaves to play on the outside, especially if Darryl Roberts can’t play. With Roberts hobbled by a calf injury and Trumaine Johnson on injured reserve, the only healthy cornerbacks the Jets have on the roster are Poole, Nate Hairston (who was benched in the second quarter of Sunday’s game), sixth-round rookie Bless Austin, and undrafted rookies Arthur Maulet and Kyron Brown. Austin played well for the Jets in his first game of the year, but he can’t be expected to fix a Jets secondary that’s been leaky all season.

Hargreaves won’t be a game-changer for the Jets, but he’ll be an infusion of young talent in a depleted secondary. He’ll also be looking to prove himself in search of another contract. The Buccaneers picked up Hargreaves’ $9.954 million fifth-year option this offseason, but it’s only guaranteed for injury. If the Jets claim him, they could easily try him out for a few games and see how he fares in the offseason before committing to that price tag for the 2020 season.

Hargreaves also has a few former teammates on the Jets – Poole and safety Marcus Maye both played with Hargreaves in Gainesville in 2015.

The Jets are grasping at straws in the secondary right now. Hargreaves isn’t the player many expected him to be after his rookie season, but he’s young and experienced and could be a short-term solution for the Jets defense heading into the back-half of its schedule.

Cutting Vernon Hargreaves further proves 2016 NFL Draft was one of the franchise’s worst

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers cut former first-round pick Vernon Hargreaves, further proving the 2016 NFL Draft was one of the franchise’s worst.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers made the decision today to cut former first-round pick Vernon Hargreaves, just days after Bruce Arians benched the veteran cornerback for lack of hustle during Sunday’s win over the Arizona Cardinals.

Hargreaves was the team’s first round pick in the 2016 NFL Draft (11th overall), and came into the draft ranked as one of the top two cornerbacks in his class. But, after playing all 16 games his rookie year, Hargreaves struggled to stay healthy over the last two seasons, playing a total of just 10 games entering 2019. This year, he’d started all nine of the team’s games, but cutting him was a smart business move by the Bucs given the defender’s history of getting hurt.

Still, biding farewell to Hargreaves further proves that the 2016 draft was a nightmare for both general manager Jason Licht and the Buccaneers franchise. In fact, only one player drafted by the team in 2016 is still on the roster.

Take a look at this tweet, courtesy of Jenna Laine of ESPN.

“Vernon Hargreaves’ departure means that just ONE of Jason Licht’s 2016 draft picks remain on the current roster: Ryan Smith, who has played just five defensive snaps this year. Noah Spence, Roberto Aguayo, Caleb Benenoch, Devante Bond and Danny Vitale were all cut.”

I think Bucs fans will always remember that draft as the Aguayo Draft.

It seemed for a while that Hargreaves may finally develop into the player the Bucs were hoping for, but his lack of effort in Week 10 was apparently the final straw.

Should the Dolphins claim CB Vernon Hargreaves?

The Dolphins would be wise to place a waiver claim on the recently cut Vernon Hargreaves, a former 1st-round cornerback out of Tampa Bay.

The Miami Dolphins’ season has been filled with waiver claims, trades and acquisitions of former highly coveted players who haven’t been able to live up to the hype. The Dolphins’ additions of DE Taco Charlton, DL Robert Nkemdiche, QB Josh Rosen and DB Eric Rowe are just a few of the examples of high prized additions that came to Miami this season after failing to take the next step as players.

Should the Dolphins be investigating making another addition to the growing list of former high-prized draft picks?

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers unexpectedly cut cornerback Vernon Hargreaves today — a former top-15 pick by the Bucs out of the University of Florida back in 2016. Tampa’s new coaching staff, led by Bruce Arians, hadn’t taken particularly well to Hargreaves — although Hargreaves himself has been a massive disappointment after being largely relegated to living in the slot as a nickel cornerback. His final transgression in Tampa? He was reportedly benched for a lack of hustle in the third quarter of Tampa’s win over Arizona this past weekend.

Should Miami kick the tires and make a waiver claim on Hargreaves? Absolutely. Hargreaves is still just 24 years old and clearly has talent. The Dolphins have ample cap space at their disposal and use defensive backs with such great frequency that Hargreaves would have every opportunity to get his act together and stick in the NFL with Miami.

The odds of Miami making a claim? It is hard to say. The Dolphins have a coach in Brian Flores who looks to create personal connections with his players, but so did Tampa with Arians and that didn’t seem to help matters. Yet sometimes a player just needs a change of scenery. Miami can provide that, without asking Hargreaves to go too far from home.

We’ll know by tomorrow afternoon whether or not the Dolphins made a claim; the waiver order mirrors the current NFL draft order, so if they want to get in on the action, the odds of them landing Hargreaves on waivers is pretty strong.

Cutting Vernon Hargreaves was a smart business move by the Bucs

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ decision to cut cornerback Vernon Hargreaves likely had a lot to do with his 2020 option.

[jwplayer c83v0OEl-ThvAeFxT]

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers made the surprising move of cutting former first-round pick Vernon Hargreaves today, just days after the cornerback was benched for lack of hustle during the team’s win over the Arizona Cardinals.

Hargreaves, who started all nine games this season and had an interception and touchdown back in Week 1, is still guaranteed the rest of his 2019 salary. But, by cutting Hargreaves now, the team made a smart business move, one that could’ve been costly had they kept him on the roster.

While Hargreaves has played in all nine games this year, he played in just 10 total over the previous two seasons, so he certainly has a history of suffering season-ending injuries.

It’s clear Hargreaves didn’t fit into the team’s long-term plans, so better to part ways now rather than risk paying him more.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers made the stunning move today of cutting former first-round pick Vernon Hargreaves, who was benched during Sunday’s win over the Arizona Cardinals for lack of hustle.

“He didn’t look like he was hustling to go in for a tackle,” said Arians, via Jenna Laine of ESPN.

The move ends a rather disappointing run in Tampa Bay for the cornerback who was selected 11th overall in the 2016 NFL Draft. Hargreaves played and started in all 16 games his rookie season, but due to injuries, played in just 10 games total over the following two years. He had started all nine of Tampa Bay’s games this year, recording an interception and touchdown in the team’s Week 1 loss to the San Francisco 49ers.

At just 24 years old, Hargreaves is sure to get an opportunity elsewhere. For now, though, see how Twitter reacted to the surprising news.

Bucs cut former first-rounder Vernon Hargreaves before Saints game

WR Michael Thomas and the New Orleans Saints will play the Tampa Bay Buccaneers without top CB Vernon Hargreaves, who was released Tuesday.

[jwplayer sXmBDaQ3]

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers made a big move at cornerback, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter. Schefter reported that Tampa Bay cut starting cornerback Vernon Hargreaves, their former first-round pick in 2016 out of Florida. Hargreaves had played the third-most defensive snaps of all Buccaneers this season (582), including 46 snaps last Sunday against the Arizona Cardinals. Hargreaves will now go on waivers.

Their pass defense was ranked worst in the league, so some change was inevitable. It’s just strange to outright cut someone who led his position in playing-time at this point in the season, even if Buccaneers coach Bruce Arians benched Hargreaves late in the game for a perceived lack of hustle.

Hargreaves’ release might look as if it’s coming at a strange time, but it makes some sense; at a distant third-place in the NFC South with a 3-6 record, the Buccaneers are shifting their focus towards self-evaluating and figuring out which players will still be here next year. Cutting a former top draft pick sends a clear message that no one is safe, and lacking effort won’t be tolerated.

So what does this mean for the New Orleans Saints? They’re inbound for Tampa Bay, bringing a receiving corps that’s pretty much been a one-man show. Michael Thomas has caught 86 passes this year, while the other wide receivers (Ted Ginn Jr. Tre’Quan Smith, Deonte Harris, and Austin Carr) have combined for 30 receptions. New Orleans has had to get creative in its use of pass-catching tight ends, running backs, fullbacks, and quarterback Taysom Hill to try and pick up the slack.

Sunday should be another big game for Thomas. He dropped a season-high 182 receiving yards on Tampa Bay in their last meeting inside the Mercedes-Benz Superdome, outmuscling every defensive back they tried to assign to him. And he did that with Teddy Bridgewater at quarterback. Without Hargreaves on the field and with Drew Brees throwing to him, there’s no reason Thomas should slow down any time soon.
