The fifth edition of the Velocity Invitational returns this weekend to Sonoma Raceway, where 2009 Formula 1 world champion Jenson Button and an array of NTT IndyCar Series and other marquee drivers will headline the historic racing event.

In 2023, Velocity founder Jeffrey O’Neil and the McLaren Racing Formula 1 team partnered to create an unforgettable experience where the team took over a building with an installation of eight F1 McLaren F1 cars spanning 1969-2008 and drivers like Lando Norris, Tony Kanaan, Pato O’Ward, Alexander Rossi, Stefan Johansson and team CEO Zak Brown rotating through the machines.

In 2024, the involvement is significantly smaller, but McLaren has dispatched Kanaan, local product Nolan Siegel and, in his first official duty for the Arrow McLaren IndyCar team, Christian Lundgaard.

The trio will pilot three privately-owned turbocharged McLaren Indy cars with the 1974 M16C/D “Black Label” formerly driven by David Hobbs, Johnny Rutherford’s Gatorade-liveried 1975 M16E and the Red Roof Inns 1978 M24 being shared among the 2014 Indianapolis 500 winner and the team’s current drivers.

Kanaan achieved a lifelong dream of driving his hero Ayrton Senna’s championship-winning 1991 McLaren MP-4/6 at last year’s event (pictured above) and will prepare himself for the brutish power of an old school Indy car when he arrives on Friday.

“I don’t think anything Velocity will do ever again will top that for me, because of many reasons,” Kanaan told RACER. “So I was grateful that they invited me back, and now I can come and enjoy and be more relaxed. It’s almost like when Dan [Wheldon] won his first 500, he was all happy and stuff, and then he goes, when he won his second, ‘Man, I enjoyed the second a lot more because I was more relaxed.’ Bro, it’s the same thing to me.

“I’m going this weekend with no pressure, no butterflies about driving one of Senna’s cars. I know I’m going to drive old IndyCar. I’m going to see old friends. I’m just going to enjoy the weekend this time.”

Fellow IndyCar driver Romain Grosjean from Juncos Hollinger Racing will also be driving a few cars that have yet to be determined, and rally and drifting stars Travis Pastrana, Scott Speed and Ryan Tuerck complete the array of stars who will be in motion.

“I don’t know what I’m gonna drive yet,” Grosjean said. “I know there are really cool cars up there, so I’m not worried about getting a cool ride.

“I think it’s fantastic that a new U.S. organizer is starting an event like this that are high-end, well organized, at beautiful places. I’m excited to go; I’ve heard really good feedback from different people. It’s not a secret that I love wine and I love cars. It sounds like it’s a great fit.”

“Velocity Invitational offers a unique opportunity for automotive enthusiasts to witness firsthand the performance, innovation and excellence that defines McLaren Racing,” said Brown. “It’s a celebration of our rich heritage and an invitation to experience the intersection of speed and history up close.

“We’re excited to be part of it this year, celebrating our 60 years as a racing team.”

As well as the announcement of Norris’ addition to McLaren’s Velocity roster, the full lineup of cars that it is taking to the event has also been revealed. A number of the brand’s greatest hits will be running on-track, in what is the largest collection of heritage cars McLaren has ever run at Velocity.

Among the collection is the teams two latest F1 championship winners – MP4-23A-05 that Lewis Hamilton drove at the 2008 Brazilian grand prix to clinch his maiden title, and MP4/14A-04 that Mika Hakkinen drove to victory in the 1999 Japanese grand prix en route to his second consecutive triumph.

MP4/6-10 driven by Ayrton Senna in 1990 and MP4/2A-01 driven by Niki Lauda in 1984 to their respective third and final championship victories are also in the lineup, along with M23-5 that Emerson Fittipaldi pedalled to McLaren’s first drivers’ and constructors’ titles.

M7C-1, first raced by Bruce McLaren in 1969; M26-2, which won the 1977 British and United States Grands Prix in the hands of James Hunt; the ex-Alain Prost MP4/2B-3 from 1985; and M8D-3, raced in the 1970 CanAM championship by Dan Gurney (who won at Mosport and St. Jovite in the car) and Peter Gethin (who drove it to victory at Elkhart Lake), will also be in attendance.

Arrow McLaren IndyCar drivers Pato O’Ward, Alexander Rossi, and Tony Kanaan will join the brand’s 60th anniversary celebrations at this year’s Velocity Invitational event at Sonoma Raceway, November 10-12. The trio, along with McLaren Racing CEO Zak Brown and other drivers that will be announced at a later date, will take to the 2.52-mile California road course in a selection of historic McLaren cars ranging across open-wheel and sports car racing.

“Velocity Invitational is a spectacle of some of the world’s most unique and special cars, and to see our McLaren drivers get behind the wheel of our heritage collection at Sonoma Raceway and bring those cars to life again is an experience you cannot get anywhere else,” said Brown. “We’re excited to be part of it this year, celebrating our 60 years as a racing team.”

Velocity Invitational, which is now in its fourth year, has become a staple event for McLaren. The 2021 edition of the event featured O’Ward driving Mika Hakkinen’s 1998 championship-winning MP4/13, while last year Mario Andretti got behind the wheel of a 2013 McLaren MP4-28, with McLaren’s Extreme E driver Tanner Foust driving a McLaren F1 GTR, while a 1990 MP4/5B and a 1985 MP4/2B were shared between Hakkinen, Foust, and O’Ward over the weekend.

This year, as part of McLaren’s 60th anniversary celebrations, the company is sending “the largest collection of heritage cars that the team has run in the event, and many of these cars are rarely seen in North America” to Velocity. It follows a similar appearance at the Goodwood Festival of Speed where the team showcased a number historic cars, including Hakkinen’s 1999 championship-winning MP4/14A, Lewis Hamilton’s 2008 championship-winning MP4/14A MP4/23A, the 1970 Can-Am M8D-01, Emerson Fittipaldi’s 1974 M23-05 and an MP4/2B-03 previously driven by Alain Prost and Niki Lauda.
