Vance Joseph not among Assistant Coach of the Year finalists (one ex-Bronco is)

Vance Joseph is not a finalist for Assistant Coach of the Year, but Vic Fangio is.

The Associated Press announced finalists for its 2024 end-of-season NFL awards last week and three Denver Broncos were recognized.

Broncos coach Sean Payton (Coach of the Year), cornerback Pat Surtain (Defensive Player of the Year) and quarterback Bo Nix (Offensive Rookie of the Year) are all finalists to take home hardware following the 2024 season.

Denver’s defensive coordinator, Vance Joseph, is not among the five Assistant Coach of the Year finalists. Instead, Buffalo Bills OC Joe Brady, Philadelphia Eagles DC Vic Fangio, Minnesota Vikings DC Brian Flores and former Detroit Lions coordinators Aaron Glenn (DC) and Ben Johnson (OC) were nominated.

Fangio, of course, is a former Broncos head coach. Philly’s defense allowed 17.8 points per game in 2024, second-fewest in the NFL. Denver’s defense ranked third, allowing 18.3 PPG. Minnesota (19.5) ranked fourth and Detroit (20.1) ranked sixth.

The AP‘s award winners will be announced during NFL Honors on Feb. 6. The awards show will begin at 9 p.m. ET/8 p.m. CT on Fox and NFL Network, but the program will not air live in all time zones.

Yet another Broncos coach is a candidate to leave this offseason

Broncos pass game coordinator is a candidate for the Lions’ offensive coordinator position.

Sean Payton built quite the staff with the Denver Broncos.

Now other clubs are starting to poach from that staff.

So far this offseason, the Broncos have lost assistant general manager Darren Mougey to the New York Jets and tight ends coach Declan Doyle to the Chicago Bears. More departures could be on the way.

Denver’s pass game coordinator, John Morton, is a “candidate to watch” for the Detroit Lions’ offensive coordinator position, according to a report from NFL Network (via Lions Wire).

Morton, 55, previously served as a senior offensive assistant with the Lions in 2022 before joining the Broncos in 2023, so he’s familiar with Detroit. Morton has already interviewed with Dan Campbell for the Lions’ OC position, according to NFLN.

Morton could be the third staff member to leave Denver in 2025, and he might not be the last. Three teams are interested in Broncos assistant special teams coach Chris Banjo, and clubs have also interviewed defensive coordinator Vance Joseph and executive David Shaw this offseason.

We will track all of Denver’s coaching staff developments on Broncos Wire.

Broncos assistant coach leaves team for promotion with Bears

Broncos tight ends coach Declan Doyle has left the team to become the new offensive coordinator of the Chicago Bears.

The Chicago Bears are hiring former Denver Broncos tight ends coach Declan Doyle as their new offensive coordinator, according to a report from NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

Doyle joined Sean Payton’s staff with the Broncos in 2023 after previously coaching as an offensive assistant with the New Orleans Saints from 2019-2022. Before that, he was a student offensive assistant at Iowa from 2016-2018.

Doyle is the second member of Denver’s staff to leave this offseason, and he might not be the last.

Broncos assistant general manager Darren Mougey previously left for the GM job with the New York Jets, and multiple coaches have drawn interest from clubs this offseason.

Three teams are interested in Broncos special teams coach Chris Banjo, two teams interviewed (but did not hire) defensive coordinator Vance Joseph, the Detroit Lions interviewed passing game coordinator Johnny Morton and the Bears previously showed interest in executive David Shaw before hiring Doyle.

We will track all of Denver’s coaching staff buzz on Broncos Wire.

Are there any head coach jobs left for Vance Joseph?

Only the Saints and Cowboys have head coach openings remaining, and Vance Joseph is not believed to be a candidate for either job.

It looks like the Denver Broncos might not lose defensive coordinator Vance Joseph this offseason.

Joseph interviewed for head coach openings with the New York Jets and Las Vegas Raiders, but did not get either job. The Jets instead hired Aaron Glenn and the Raiders hired Pete Carroll.

So, are there any head coach openings left for Joseph in 2025?

The New Orleans Saints and Dallas Cowboys are the only two clubs yet to hire a new head coach, and Joseph has not been linked to either opening. Joseph is presumably not a candidate for the Saints or Cowboys, which means he is set to remain with the Broncos for another season.

NFL head coach hirings

New England Patriots: Mike Vrabel
Chicago Bears: Ben Johnson
New York Jets: Aaron Glenn
Jacksonville Jaguars: Liam Coen
Las Vegas Raiders: Pete Carroll
New Orleans Saints: TBD
Dallas Cowboys: TBD

Joseph’s defense ranked eighth in takeaways (25), seventh in yards allowed (317.1 PG), third in points allowed (18.3 PG) and first in sacks (63) this season. It looks like the unit will have its DC back on the job in 2025.

4 head coach candidates for Raiders and 4 teams competing for them

The top candidates still out there in whom the Raiders have shown interest and the NFL teams which still have head coach vacancies.

We’re approaching the third week that the Raiders have been without a head coach. They have had several interviews, but as of now have yet to find their guy.

They’ve watched as three different coaches in whom they have expressed interest have taken head coach positions elsewhere. So, on down the list they go.

There are currently four teams still looking for a head coach — Raiders, New Orleans Saints, Jacksonville Jaguars, and Dallas Cowboys (though reports say they are leaning toward current OC Brian Schottenheimer to take the job).

These teams will be fighting over the top candidates this cycle.

Here are the top four the Raiders are looking at.

Former Seahawks HC Pete Carroll

The 73-year-old former longtime head coach is looking to get back to it. He had a successful 14-year run with the Seahawks that included a Super Bowl win and two NFC Championships. He also had head coaching stops with the Patriots, Jets, and USC Trojans. He had an interview with the Raiders last week.

Ravens OC Todd Monken

One of the most respected coordinators in the NFL. He has spent six years as an OC in the NFL, including three with the Buccaneers (2016-18) and the past two with the Ravens. In between, he was the OC at Georgia when they won two National Championships and where he coached Raiders tight end Brock Bowers. The Raiders have requested an interview with him, but none has yet been reported.

Chiefs DC Steve Spagnuolo

Spagnuolo was a head coach for three seasons with the Rams (2009-11). He went 10-38 in those seasons and hasn’t gotten a second shot since. But his six seasons as DC in KC has him once again being talked about as head coach material. The Raiders had a virtual interview with him and should they not jump the gun and hire a head coach before the Chiefs exit the playoffs, you’d figure an in-person interview with Spagnuolo would follow.

Former Jets HC Robert Saleh

Saleh went 20-36 over four seasons with the Jets and was fired five games into last season despite a decent 2-3 record. The fact that the previously highly respected DC is getting many interviews now is a testament to the respect he still has in league circles.

Other available candidates whose names who have frequently come up for head coaching jobs this cycle include: Bills OC Joe Brady, Eagles OC Kellen Moore, and Broncos DC Vance Joseph.

Broncos won’t lose Vance Joseph to Jets; Raiders hire ex-Denver executive

The Jets will not hire Broncos DC Vance Joseph as their new head coach, opting to hire Aaron Glenn instead. That and more updates here.

The Denver Broncos aren’t seeking a head coach this offseason, but they’re still making headlines as other NFL teams fill their coach openings.

The latest development is the New York Jets hiring former Detroit Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn as their new head coach. That news confirms that the Broncos will not lose defensive coordinator Vance Joseph to New York this offseason.

Joseph interviewed for the Jets’ and Las Vegas Raiders’ head coach openings. New York’s position has now been filled. Las Vegas is yet to make its hire.

Elsewhere in the hiring cycle, the Raiders are set to hire John Spytek as their new general manager. Spytek served as a southwest area scout (2013) and national scout (2014-2015) in Denver, helping the Broncos identify talent leading up to their win in Super Bowl 50. He left the team for a promotion with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2016 and now lands in Las Vegas.

Meanwhile, back to coaching buzz: Glenn wants to interview Denver assistant special teams coach Chris Banjo for New York’s special teams coordinator position.

The Broncos also have a ST coordinator opening after firing Ben Kotwica last week. Denver fired Kotwica with Darren Rizzi in mind as a potential replacement candidate, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

So the Broncos aren’t losing Joseph, at least not to New York, but they might lose an assistant. And Denver’s still seeking a new ST coach. We will track future coaching staff developments on Broncos Wire.

Jets HC Aaron Glenn wants to poach a coach from Broncos

Aaron Glenn, the new head coach of the Jets, wants to hire Broncos assistant Chris Banjo as New York’s special teams coordinator.

The New York Jets are hiring former Detroit Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn as their new head coach, according to Jets Wire. This news could have multiple implications for the Denver Broncos.

The first and perhaps most notable implication is that Denver defensive coordinator Vance Joseph did not get the New York job. Joseph had interviewed for the Jets’ head coach opening earlier this month. Joseph seemingly still remains a HC candidate for the Las Vegas Raiders.

The fallout might not stop with Joseph. Glenn wants to hire Broncos assistant special teams coach Chris Banjo as New York’s new special teams coordinator, according to a report from Jordan Schultz of Fox Sports. Glenn served as a defensive backs coach with the New Orleans Saints from 2016-2020, overlapping with Banjo’s stint as a safety in New Orleans (2016-2018).

The Jets have not yet officially requested permission from Denver to interview Banjo, according to KUSA-TV’s Mike Klis, but they likely will soon. The Broncos have already allowed Banjo to interview with the San Francisco 49ers and they are unlikely to block a New York interview.

Denver, of course, could consider Banjo for its own special teams coach opening after firing Ben Kotwica last week. NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport has reported that the Broncos viewed Darren Rizzi as their top replacement target when they fired Kotwica, but there will be competition for Rizzi. Stay tuned.

Sean Payton reacts to NFL teams interviewing members of his staff

“We should only worry when there’s no interest,” Sean Payton said of other teams interviewing members of his staff.

The Denver Broncos might lose a coach or two this offseason.

Broncos defensive coordinator Vance Joseph is a candidate for at least two head coach openings, and special teams assistant coach Chris Banjo is a candidate for the San Francisco 49ers’ special teams coordinator job. (Two Denver executives are also drawing interest from other clubs.)

Broncos coach Sean Payton is not concerned about the possibility of losing members of his staff. In fact, Payton views it as a positive.

“I think it’s a great sign, No. 1 for Vance,” Payton said on Jan. 6. “He’s smart. He’s a great communicator. He has a very calm and I would say strong voice. His players play extremely hard for him. He’s been a great addition to our staff.”

Payton then recalled a conversation he had with late former New Orleans Saints owner Tom Benson.

“My early years in New Orleans, I can recall the late Mr. Benson came down, and we had been winning and had a number of coaches that had interview opportunities,” Payton said. “I think one season we had three or four. He said, ‘Coach, we have a lot of interest in our coaches now. What do you think about that?’ I said, ‘Mr. Benson, we shouldn’t worry.’ I said, ‘We should only worry when there’s no interest.’

“I think that trying to find and hire quality coaches that are passionate about what they’re doing — guys like Vance his expertise. History has told us on a number of occasions the second experience for guys often times can be positive. … I think that Vance is going to be a head coach again.”

Payton would be more concerned if none of his coaches were drawing interest from other clubs. It’s a good reflection on the staff that Payton has built in Denver, and Payton will be trusted to find the right replacements if any coaches do leave his staff in 2025.

Broncos coaching staff buzz: Monday’s developments impact Denver

The Bears are hiring Ben Johnson, so Broncos executive David Shaw won’t land the HC job in Chicago.

The NFL’s coaching carousel continues to spin, and the Denver Broncos are along for the ride.

The biggest news item to drop on Monday was the Chicago Bears landing on ex-Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson as their new head coach. That’s notable for the Broncos because it means senior personnel executive David Shaw won’t be leaving for a promotion in Chicago. Shaw interviewed for the Bears’ head coach opening last week.

Elsewhere on the head coach front, the Las Vegas Raiders, New York Jets, Dallas Cowboys, New Orleans Saints and Jacksonville Jaguars still have openings. Denver defensive coordinator Vance Joseph has interviewed for the Raiders and Jets HC positions.

Meanwhile, Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn has a HC interview with the Jets on Tuesday. Glenn is expected to land with one of the Jets or Saints, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. If Glenn takes the NY job, that would be one less opening for Joseph.

Elsewhere, the Tennessee Titans are hiring John Fassel as their new special teams coordinator. Fassel was dubbed a name to watch after the Broncos fired ST coordinator Ben Kotwica last week. Darren Rizzi remains the candidate to keep an eye on as a potential Kotwica replacement.

2 Broncos begin interviewing for NFL head coach openings

Vance Joseph (Jets, Raiders) and David Shaw (Bears) are interviewing for head coach openings. Two more Broncos are also drawing interest.

The Denver Broncos have two candidates to leave the team for a head coach job this offseason.

The first candidate is defensive coordinator Vance Joseph, who is set to interview for the open New York Jets job today, according to multiple reports. After the NY interview, Joseph will have a HC interview with the Las Vegas Raiders on Thursday, according to KUSA-TV’s Mike Klis.

If Joseph leaves the Broncos for a HC job with another NFL team, Denver will receive a pair of third-round compensatory draft picks (one in 2025 and one in 2026).

Another candidate to leave the Broncos in 2025 is senior personnel executive David Shaw, who interviewed for the Chicago Bears’ head coach position on Tuesday.

Because Shaw has only been in Denver for one season, the Broncos will not receive comp picks if he gets a head coach job in 2025.

Meanwhile, Denver’s assistant special teams coach, Chris Banjo, is a candidate for the San Francisco 49ers’ special teams coordinator role, and Broncos assistant general manager Darren Mougey is a candidate for the Jets’ GM position.

Denver might have to find some replacement coaches and executives in the coming weeks. Stay tuned.
