V Rising will be free to play this weekend

If you love vampires and survival games, the brilliant V Rising is free to try soon.

Earlier this year, V Rising took the gaming world by storm, and soon everyone can give it a try for zero dollars and zero cents.

On Tuesday, Stunlock Studios announced that V Rising is free to play from Friday, Oct. 28 to Nov. 1, 2022, on Steam. For anyone unfamiliar with the game, it’s an open-world isometric survival adventure with vampires — basically, Diablo meets Valheim. Throw in some gaudy victorian Interview with the Vampire vibes for good measure, too.

Jokes aside, V Rising is arguably 2022’s biggest sleeper hit, selling over a million units in less than a month. It would shatter that record only a few days later as well. In short: people like this one a lot.

According to SteamDB, thousands of people still log into the game daily, so there’s an active player base months later. There’ll surely be loads of other newbies once the free trial begins, so you will be one of many that are just starting out.

If you’re new to V Rising, GLHF has numerous guides, including beginner tips, PVP suggestions, how to craft leather, and where bosses are in Farbane Woods. It’s one of those games that isn’t exactly friendly to new players, so it’s worth looking over any helpful write-ups.

V Rising has sold more than 1.5 million units

Stunlock Studios is planning significant content updates for the future.

It’s starting to look like V Rising could be this year’s surprise smash-hit.

On Tuesday, Stunlock Studios announced that V Rising has passed more than 1.5 million units sold. Not too shabby for an indie title that is only two weeks old. Jokes aside, that’s straight-up amazing.

Stunlock Studios is currently focusing on smaller-scale updates like bug fixes, server optimization, balance changes, and loads of quality of life updates for elements like PVP and crafting. However, the team is hoping for a shift to large content patches.

“Our mission will be to find out what is most important to our players and how to take V Rising to the next level,” Johan Ilves, marketing director at Stunlock Studios, said in a statement. “We currently plan to work on more extensive updates rather than run for frequent smaller patches and minor changes. It’s too early to tell when the first bigger V Rising content patch will arrive, as we will give it the time to make sure it brings something new to the experience.”

V Rising took over Twitch and Steam almost immediately. That momentum isn’t slowing down either, as TwitchTracker shows that V Rising is maintaining an average viewer count of 28,489 by the time of this post.

V Rising passes 1 million units sold

Vampires and crafting go together well, it seems.

It’s always wild when something comes out of nowhere and is instantly a sensation. Crafting games go through this often, and V Rising is the latest contender.

On Tuesday, Stunlock Studios announced that V Rising has sold more than 1 million units since its launch on May 17, 2022. Accomplishing that in just over one week is quite something, especially for an early access title. It’s not terribly surprising, though, since V Rising has been tearing up Steam and Twitch consistently in the past week.

For those unfamiliar with V Rising (most people), it’s an isometric survival-crafting game all about vampires. Take Diablo, smash it together with Valheim, and throw some Castlevania for good measure. Boom, that’s V Rising.

Time will tell if V Rising can maintain its popularity, but thus far, Stunlock Studios seems to know what fans want. Community manager Jeremy Fielding certainly didn’t expect this level of success coming. The team began working on V Rising three years ago and revealed it in May 2021 to relatively little fanfare.

“It’s been a slow ramp-up,” Fielding said via IGN. “A very small company with a brand new IP? It took a lot of people a long time to start to take notice.”

Things didn’t really begin picking up until people could get their hands on V Rising.

“We really started to get a lot of attention when we went into closed beta, when people really got an opportunity to get their hands on the game,” Fielding continues. “I think that’s when they started paying attention, which makes sense. When you’re just hearing about the concept it’s really hard to grasp what it is.”

‘Dark fantasy survival action RPG with vampires’ is certainly a mouthful, so I get what Fielding is alluding to here. Seems like a winning combination, though.

V Rising is already a massive hit on Steam and Twitch

The vampiric survival title is already shattering milestones.

Every so often, some little indie title comes from out of nowhere and takes the world by storm — stuff like Among Us, Phasmophobia, Valheim, and now V Rising.

On Friday, Stunlock Studios announced that V Rising has already amassed more than 500,000 players on PC. The gothic, open-world survival game with vampires didn’t have much hype before its early access launch on May 17, 2022, and just like that, it’s enormous! The studio did not explicitly state how many units of V Rising have sold yet, though there’s an up-front fee of $19.99. So yeah, it’s likely surpassed more than half a million in sales.

According to SteamDB, V Rising‘s all-time peak concurrent player count is hovering around 100,000 as of May 20, 2022, firmly placing the game in Steam’s top 10 most played titles. That number will likely skyrocket over the coming weeks as word of mouth travels around. It’s also sporting the ever-illusive “Very Positive” user review rating on the platform too.

It’s huge on Twitch as well. As of May 20, 2022, TwitchTracker indicates that V Rising boasts an average of more than 37,000 viewers. That may not sound like much, but keep in mind that the game has only been out three days.

Maybe all of this success is a flash in the pan, or maybe V Rising is the next big thing. We’ll find out soon enough.
