The Utah Jazz (5-20) and Detroit Pistons (11-16) meet Thursday. Tip-off from Little Caesars Arena is set for 6 p.m. ET. Let’s analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s NBA odds around the Jazz vs. Pistons odds and make our expert NBA picks and predictions for the best bets.

Season series: First meeting; Utah won 2-0 last season

Utah was destroyed 144-107 by the LA Clippers Monday while failing to cover as a 7.5-point underdog. Utah turned the ball over an astounding 23 times vs. L.A., which is fitting as the Jazz average 17.4 turnovers per game, most in the NBA. The Jazz have allowed at least 130 points in each of their last 4 losses.

Detroit outlasted the Miami Heat 125-124 in OT on Monday while covering as a 5-point underdog. F Tim Hardaway Jr. hit a few big time 3s in OT against Miami to help the Pistons overcome 22 turnovers. The Pistons have won 2 of their last 3 games.

Jazz at Pistons picks and predictions

Prediction

Pistons 123, Jazz 114

Moneyline

PASS.

The Pistons are the better team here on both sides of the ball and will pick up the win as -200 favorites, but such a heavy favorite is never worth the risk of betting on. Pass here and bet on the spread and/or total instead.

Against the spread

LEAN PISTONS -4.5 (-110).

Detroit has covered the spread in 3 of its last 4 games while Utah has failed to cover in 3 straight games. This season, the Pistons are 13-13-1 ATS while Utah is only 10-15 ATS.

Detroit has also covered in 4 of its last 6 matchups against the Jazz.

This is a lean because Detroit is only 4-6 ATS in its last 10 games.

Over/Under

BET OVER 228.5 (-110).

The Over has hit in 4 of Detroit’s last 5 games and is 7-3 in the Pistons’ last 10 games. For Utah, the Over is undefeated in its last 5 games. The Over has also hit in 3 of the last 4 overall matchups between these squads and is 2-1 in the last 3 meetings in Detroit.

Jazz at Pistons: Odds, betting lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Jazz 113, Pistons 108

Money line (ML)

The Jazz (-350) have been a little Jekyll and Hyde lately. They spanked Milwaukee at FiServ Forum by a 131-118 score last time out, winning outright as 5.5-point underdogs. Then they lost 112-100 in New York as 7.5-point favorites, and were worked over by Brooklyn 130-96 on Jan. 5 as 4.5-point favorites. Before that they routed San Antonio as 5.5-point favorites, and topped the Clippers as 3.5-point underdogs. Before that was a loss on New Year’s Eve as four-point favorites at home to Phoenix by 11.

You never know what you’re going to get with the Jazz, so wins that should be slam-dunk plays aren’t, and when they’re an underdog they have been showing out. Those are the types of teams you steer far away from when playing money lines, unless you also enjoy picking high-risk stocks, eating day-old gas station sushi and playing Russian Roulette on occasion. I like none of those things. AVOID.

Against the spread (ATS)

The PISTONS +7.5 (+100) are the safe play on their home floor catching more than three buckets. While they have just two victories in nine games, they have covered four of the past five, including three straight at LCA. And Detroit is relatively healthy, too, so that makes them an attractive play. Plus, Utah has taken it on the chin as a favorite over the past season or so, going 6-23-2 ATS in the past 31 as a favorite.

Over/Under (O/U)

OVER 217.5 (-110) has cashed in four of Utah’s past five on the road, and 14 of the previous 18 as a road favorite. The Over is also 24-10 in Detroit’s past 34 on their home floor, including 11-5 in the past 16 as a home ‘dog. Yes, the series trends point to the Under, but these teams meet twice per year, and personnel has dramatically changed over the past 11 meetings, so a 9-2 Under run in the series can mostly be discounted.
