Michigan State hockey still in the top ten in latest USCHO poll

Michigan State hockey showed a lot of resilience this weekend to hold onto their spot in the top ten of the USCHO poll. After getting blown out by rival Michigan at home on Friday night, the Spartans stormed back to beat the Wolverines in Ann Arbor.

With the bounce-back win, the Spartans hung in the top ten, coming in just one point below where they were last week, now at No. 8.

WATCH: Badgers men’s hockey coach talks about #1 ranking

Hastings isn’t too caught up in number-one ranking

The Badgers men’s hockey team is out to a 9-1 start and they are the number-one ranked team in the nation, but head coach Mike Hastings isn’t overly caught up in where they are in the polls.

Wisconsin will face off with #11 Michigan State for two games on the road this weekend (Friday and Saturday) and they will have an opportunity to extend their lead in the Big Ten standings.

To this point in the first season under new head coach Mike Hastings, the Badgers have gone on the road and beaten Minnesota (top-ranked team in the nation at the time) twice and then beat Michigan (fourth-ranked at the time) twice at home, amongst other impressive feats.

They’re out to their best start in over two decades.

Notre Dame Opens 2020-21 Road Schedule Against Michigan

Notre Dame is off to a rough start after dropping its first two games of the 2020-21 season to Wisconsin at home.

Notre Dame is off to a rough start after dropping its first two games of the 2020-21 season to Wisconsin at home. Fresh off a bye week for final exams, it doesn’t get any easier as the Irish will spend the Friday and Saturday of Thanksgiving weekend at Michigan, which is ranked fourth in the latest USCHO poll. This will be the only time the Irish are on the road during the first and so far, only portion of the Big Ten schedule.

Colin Theisen will be the Notre Dame player to watch as he accounted for all of his team’s goals in scoring a hat track during the second game against the Badgers. He and fellow senior Matt Hellickson enter the series having played every possible game in their Irish careers (119). However, it will take more than recent achievements and iron man streaks to take down a team like the Wolverines.

(*in the national rankings.)

It has been a long downturn for the MSU men’s hockey program, but for the first time in a long time the program looks to be on a stable path forward.

After a weekend in which the Spartans took four of a possible six points from No. 3 Notre Dame, MSU finds themselves nationally ranked, coming in at No. 20 in the latest USCHO poll.

The Spartans are 6-5-1 overall with a 4-1-1-0 record in the Big Ten. They have wins over No. 3 Notre Dame and No. 6 Penn State this season.

MSU hits the road for a weekend set in Columbus against the No. 11 Buckeyes.
