USC (1-1) vs Washington State (1-1) Game Preview

Why USC Will Win

The talent is there – it’s just not playing well.

There’s never a good time to fire a head coach who needs to go, but two games into a season certainly doesn’t do much for a team trying to figure it all out on the fly.

It wasn’t just one bad day against Stanford that launched Clay Helton – it was the direction of the program all while UCLA appears to be ascending. There’s enough in place to turn this around fast, though, and now the pressure is essentially off.  There won’t be a weekly Helton On The Hot Seat thing.

It’ll be up to new interim head man Donte Williams to take a team full of good players and making it all work, and it starts with the passing game going off.

Kedon Slovis hasn’t been bad, and this week he should throw at will against a Washington State defense that doesn’t have a pass rush and struggled in its first two games. Once the O gets going, everything else should fall into place.

Week 3 College Football Expert Picks

Why Washington State Will Win

So what’s really the problem at USC?

It was able to get by San Jose State with relative ease, and chalk up the Stanford game to a bad day. However, there hasn’t been anything from the defensive line so far – it’s not getting behind the line – and there are WAY too many penalties and mistakes so far.

Wazzu has a similar problem to USC’s – the talent in place isn’t producing yet.

Turnovers aren’t an issue, and the parts are there to start doing a whole lot more to keep the chains moving, and again, USC probably won’t bring the pressure.

Week 3 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

USC is okay.

Washington State lost to Utah State and wasn’t great against Portland State, but the Pac-12 season starts now and there couldn’t be a better time to try pulling this off.

Instead of melting down, watch out for the Trojans to start playing looser and better. The defense will be okay, but it’s the offensive side that will quickly take over with a huge day from the passing attack.

Why USC Will Win

The Trojans are on a five game winning streak and won 11 of their last 12 games – including an 85-77 victory over Washington State – with the defense seemingly getting stronger and the consistency there on the offensive side.

No, this isn’t going to be a high-powered three-point shooting team that can put up points in big runs, but the defense comes up with seemingly every key rebound, there are a whole slew of blocks, and the activity is there to generate enough second-chance points to matter.

Washington State doesn’t have the scoring punch to do much if it gets down early.

Why Washington State Will Win

The Cougars can guard, too.

They might not be as solid as the USC defense, but they’re not all that far off with the second-best D in the Pac-12. They don’t allow much to happen from three, they close out possessions well – they’re great on the defensive boards – and they’re more than happy to play a controlled, low-scoring game.

On a nice run of three wins in the last four games – including a big victory over UCLA a few days ago – the shots are starting to fall a bit more from the outside to go along with the good defense.

What’s Going To Happen

USC was able to overcome a relatively good-shooting day from Wazzu for a somewhat high-scoring game in the first meeting. The Cougars allowed too many offensive rebounds, and that’s going to be a problem again.

Everything might be clicking for the Trojans, but this will be a grind of a game that doesn’t open up until late.

USC (3-0) vs Washington State (1-1) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on the NFL, go to BetMGM

Why Washington State Will Win

The offense hasn’t quite worked like it normally does at Washington State, but the passing game clicked against Oregon, the ground game was fine against Oregon State, and starting QB Jayden de Laura is fine and ready to go.

The offensive line is doing a strong job at keeping defenses out of the backfield, there’s been only one turnover, and there’s enough pop and explosion – and time to prepare – to keep up with a USC offense that’s been fine, but hasn’t quite blown up yet.

Unlike the Wazzu O line, the USC offensive front is having problems against teams that can get behind the line. The Cougars don’t have a big-time pass rush, but they should be able to generate pressure.

Week 14 College Schedule

Why USC Will Win

Did USC find something that works against Utah? It was the team’s lowest yardage output yet, but it was an effective performance against a tough team.

The defensive side came up with its best performance of the season, was fantastic against the run, and it came through when needed with the key plays to prevent the drama from the first two games.

Kedon Slovis might not be ripping it up quite as well as expected, but USC still leads the Pac-12 in passing, and it’s still a positive that the team is 3-0 even though things aren’t working quite right.

Washington State hasn’t done much defensively, the line should be shoved a bit against the run, and there isn’t much of a worry about turnovers – Wazzu isn’t taking it away enough to matter.

CFN Experts Picks: College

What’s Going To Happen

It’s a strange Sunday game going on just after both the Rams and Chargers are finishing up.

USC’s offense will finally start to look the part, but Washington State will bring just enough offensive production for a full four quarters to make this interesting. The Trojans will have enough balance to keep things moving with third down conversion after third down conversion.
