USC vs Arizona Game Preview

Why USC Will Win

The Trojans looked like they wanted to keep going at the very end of the tough 43-42 loss at Utah, but now they should be recharged after a week off.

The offense that’s been a wee bit inconsistent shouldn’t have any issues against an Arizona defense that allowed 580 yards or more in three of the last four games – all losses – with the one outlier the win over Colorado.

The Wildcats aren’t generating any pressure in the backfield – USC QB Caleb Williams should get plenty of time to let the downfield plays develop – with the run defense about to be in for a long day.

Oregon ran at will, Cal ripped off big dash after big dash, and it’s about to give up over 200 yards on the ground – the Trojans will give the backs more work this week.

However …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 8

Why Arizona Will Win

Arizona’s passing game has been fantastic.

The defense might give up yards and points far too quickly, but Jayden de Laura threw for over 400 yards in three of the last four games to keep opposing offenses pushing.

He has been bombing away, the deep group of receivers should press the Trojan corners, and opportunities to get the running game working will be there. The Cats don’t have to come up with huge yards on the ground, but they’ll make this interesting if they can flirt with five yards per carry.

The O will have its moments, but …

What’s Going To Happen

Arizona has to force takeaways to pull this off, and it won’t.

Teams became far, far more careful – easily said than done – against the USC secondary, and the takeaways have slowed with two in the last three games after coming up with 15 in the first four games. However, Arizona has just one takeaway in the last four games.

USC has given away just one turnover all year long. It’s not going to screw up, the Wildcat D won’t hold on, and it’ll be a fun offensive show with the Trojans getting back on track.

USC vs Arizona Game Preview

Why USC Will Win

To hang with Arizona you have to be able to keep up on the boards.

Not a problem. Arizona is among the best teams in the country and on top of the Pac-12 in total rebounds, but USC leads the nation in rebounds per game.

You also need an inside presence and be able to attack the rim on the move. USC doesn’t shoot a whole ton of threes – but it makes them when it does – because it’s too good on the inside.

USC has a way of controlling games with its style and its tempo, and it should be able to keep Arizona from going on the big runs. Throw in the team’s ability to keep the fouls to a minimum, and it might have the right style.

Arizona is used to making at least 12 free throws a game. No one has made more than nine against USC in any of the last four because the team just doesn’t hack enough. But …

– Latest Polls AP | Coaches

Why Arizona Will Win

Arizona has a way of getting teams out to its comfort zone.

It was able to push past UCLA with a big second half run on Thursday night. It might not be great from three on a consistent basis, but it’s a brilliant team at making the extra pass for points on one end, and getting the interior defense on the other to force teams to hit from the outside.

USC’s comfort zone is to rely on the three after the inside game is working. If it has to start cranking up shots from the outside in bunches, it’s in trouble.

Top 25 Game Previews, Predictions

What’s Going To Happen

Arizona got its groove back against UCLA.

USC has to dominate the rebounding margin, and it won’t. It has to own the inside, and it won’t. Arizona will get pushed by one of the nation’s best defenses, and it’s going to make this a fight until late.

Arizona will be a big stronger from three. It’ll be more diverse with its scoring.

USC vs Arizona Game Preview

Why Arizona Will Win

The team has been brutally close to finally getting a win.

It’s been a few years without a victory – going back to the middle of 2019 – but it had Washington in big, big trouble before succumbing late 21-16. It played well for three quarters against Oregon, and …

Okay, it got wrecked by an awful Colorado team in what should’ve been a winnable game, but the want-to is still there. This team still has a big goal to shoot for – yeah, getting a W would be a huge deal – but USC is quickly slipping away into 2022.

It’s a lost year for a program in limbo. Everyone’s waiting for the head coaching search to really kick in, and going to a random bowl isn’t exactly an acceptable carrot at the end of the stick.

This might be the time for Arizona to get that running game going – it ran for over 200 yards against both Oregon and Washington – to power away and operate against a Trojan defensive front that’s not getting into the backfield.

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 9

Why USC Will Win

Arizona isn’t doing the little things right to get over the hump.

Even when it’s playing well, there’s a bad penalty here, a missed assignment there, a mental lapse, a turnover, a special teams gaffe, a missed opportunity, something to screw it all up.

The Wildcat offense doesn’t do enough to keep things moving, the defense doesn’t do enough against the run, and turnovers are a huge issue.

Arizona is dead last in the nation in turnover margin.

USC might not be playing all that well, but the passing attack is still the best in the Pac-12, and it should be able to get out to a decent enough start to make Arizona press. There isn’t enough of a Wildcat offense – there’s nothing happening down the field – to keep up.

College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews, Week 9

What’s Going To Happen

USC will be able to go through the motions and win this easily.

Arizona will still give it the old college try, but it’s not getting anything out of its quarterbacks – injuries have been a major issue and Gunner Cruz is struggling – but there’s hope that Will Plummer will be a factor.

The USC offense will perk up when it has to in the second quarter to all but put this away.

USC has a hard time coming up with a full 60 minutes, but it won’t need to.

The USC Trojans will travel to take on the Arizona Wildcats from Arizona Stadium in Tucson, Arizona on Saturday afternoon.

USC is coming off a comeback win against Arizona State in the season opener and is looking for a quick 2-0 start with Kedon Slovis under center this year. This will be Arizona’s first game of the season after their game at Utah was canceled last week. Grant Gunnell will take over as quarterback after throwing for 1,200 yards and 9 touchdowns as a backup.

This should be a fantastic Pac 12 matchup, don’t miss it! Here is everything you need to know to stream the game tonight.

Prediction: USC had a nice comeback win last weekend and should have some confidence in this one. We have no idea what Arizona will look like but they have a lot of talent on this team. I’m not sure that USC will win by two touchdowns.

Why USC Will Win

Take the win, don’t ask questions, and move on.

The Trojans were pushed to the brink by Arizona State and came through with a miraculous finish to win 28-27. Kedon Slovis threw it 55 times, but he came up with 381 yards and two scores and came through in the clutch, and the team overcame four takeaways to pull it off.

The Arizona defense is going to need some time, and it’s not going to get it.

The linebacking corps should be one, but the pass rush is still going to be a concern, and the secondary that got hit too easily for 300 yards on a regular basis also has to prove it can start making more plays.

Week 11 Schedule, Predictions, Lines

Why Arizona Will Win

Turnovers were a problem in Week 1 for the Trojans, and Arizona needs them. There were three fumbles, Slovis threw a pick, and the Trojans needed everyone of their 556 yards to get the win.

The Wildcat offense needs to come out hot from the start, and the receivers are in place for QB Grant Gunnell to bomb away early on. Expect a shootout – the Arizona defense won’t have anything special to throw at the Trojan attack –  and as long as the O line can be merely okay, the production will come.

USC didn’t generate enough of a pass rush against ASU – Gunnell should have time.

CFN College Football Experts Picks

What’s Going To Happen

Arizona will be surprisingly good for a half.

The defense isn’t going to do anything to stop Slovis, but with a bit more time to prepare after missing last week’s game against Utah, it’ll be a good game that throws another scare into the Trojans – but not nearly as much of one as ASU did.

The Trojans will roar right away in the second half to put it away, the Wildcats will turn it over twice, and a fun game will quickly open up.
