UCLA football falls to USC Trojans in Big Ten slugfest

The UCLA Bruins fell short against rival USC at the Rose Bowl.

The UCLA Bruins fell to the USC Trojans on Saturday night 19-13, losing to their biggest rival at the Rose Bowl. Dropping to 4-7 on the season, the Bruins are no longer eligible for a bowl game in the 2024 college football season.

Despite a strong performance by Bruins’ quarterback Ethan Garbers, who finished with 265 yards on 20-29 passing and a touchdown, the UCLA’s offense failed to convert at critical junctures and let the game slip away.

In Saturday night’s performance, the Bruins were an abysmal 3-11 on third down and 0-3 on fourth down, with playcalling and execution proving to be the deciding factor.

On the most crucial play of the contest, trailing 16-13 with just under five minutes remaining from their own 34-yard line, head coach DeShaun Foster opted to keep the offense on the field to extend the Bruins drive.

Offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy drew up a quarterback sneak for Ethan Garbers, who was stuffed at the line of scrimmage, turning the ball over to the Trojans and effectively ending the game.

Though the Bruins were competitive with the Trojans all night, UCLA was a dollar short and a day too late in all three phases. Scoreless in the fourth quarter, UCLA could not rise to the occasion in the game’s biggest moments.

Saturday’s loss marked the beginning of the end of the Bruins’ first season in the Big Ten and another example of how far the team still has to go. The Bruins look to regroup and reset for their final game next week against Fresno State.

Trojans Wire reveals the reason why USC’s season has gone wrong

A lot of disappointment at USC.

Ahead of the UCLA-USC rivalry, Matt Zemek of Trojans Wire answered some questions about USC.

One of them is something everybody has been wondering: Why did this season go so wrong for USC?

“It’s the offensive line. The O-line has had its good moments. It was solid against LSU, and it dominated the second half against Wisconsin. Yet, the big reality connected to the offensive line is that it plays well for no more than 2.5 quarters, around 35-40 minutes, per game. There are always 20 minutes per game in which this line struggles to pass protect and run block. This past Saturday versus Nebraska, it was the first quarter. In the Penn State game, it was the third quarter. USC’s offensive line basically plays well for half a game, and that’s nowhere near good enough. The Trojans’ best teams, whether under Pete Carroll, or the late John Robinson, or John McKay, had top-tier offensive lines. This line doesn’t measure up.”

Truth be told, it has not been a good season for USC. A win over UCLA would help, but disappointment is real.

USC-UCLA game is huge for Lincoln Riley

This is a big game for Lincoln Riley.

With the USC Trojans and UCLA Bruins facing off in a rivalry game, we talked to Trojans Wire editor Matt Zemek about some different topics.

One of them is Lincoln Riley, who has been involved in discussions amid a disappointing year for the Trojans.

When asked how big this UCLA game is for Riley, Zemek had an honest answer.

“Let’s put it this way: If he loses to DeShaun Foster in Foster’s first season, that would be a level of humiliation which would exceed every previous USC loss under Riley, with the possible exception of the Cotton Bowl against Tulane. The loss would also mean that USC would have to beat Notre Dame to clinch a bowl bid. USC would be unlikely to even make a bowl game. The Trojans could sink to 5-7, which was the record of the team in 2018 under Clay Helton. If Riley loses this game, he is undoubtedly on the hot seat entering 2025. If he wants a smoother ride at USC (not that it’s going to be smooth anyway), he absolutely must win this game. There are zero excuses for the Trojans at this point. This is the game they almost surely have to win if they want to get a bowl bid and secure those crucial December bowl practices, which help the coaching staff build the roster and develop players heading into spring ball.”

If Riley and USC lose to UCLA, things could get ugly for the Trojans.

Photos from UCLA-USC 2023 showdown

Just a year ago.

Ahead of the UCLA-USC rivalry game, we look back at some of the recent matchups.

A year ago, UCLA got the 38-20 win on the road, and it turned out to be the last time Chip Kelly would face USC as the head coach.

Ethan Garbers threw three touchdowns, outdueling top pick Caleb Williams. TJ Harden had 142 yards and a score, and Hudson Habermehl, who is now out for the year, had a pair of touchdown receptions in the win.

Brenden Rice broke loose for USC with 147 yards and a score on eight receptions, but it wasn’t enough as UCLA had no issues topping USC.

Trojans Wire dishes on angry USC fans ahead of UCLA clash

USC fans have NOT had a good season.

With UCLA facing USC in a rivalry game, it is a reminder that both teams have not had the best seasons.

The Bruins were expected to have a rough transition with DeShaun Foster and a move to the Big Ten, but USC’s expectations were much higher than the 5-5 record they have now.

Matt Zemek of Trojans Wire answered the question everyone is asking: How angry are USC fans?

“UCLA fans can guess, but the short answer is that it’s as bad as you would expect,” Zemek said. “USC fans are fed up with Lincoln Riley, and frankly, they should be. How can Trojan fans not be hugely disappointed with what they have seen? Obviously, Lincoln Riley did not stock the roster well enough to compensate for the loss of Caleb Williams. There’s a reason Caleb was the No. 1 pick in the NFL draft. That doesn’t happen by accident. The Trojans needed a supporting cast which would give Miller Moss the best possible chance to succeed, and the truth is that they didn’t have that elite roster to surround Moss. It’s true that Moss made his share of mistakes, but a lot of that was the offensive line not protecting Moss in critical moments against Michigan and Minnesota.”

If USC loses to UCLA and risks not getting into a bowl game, things could ugly in Trojans land.

UCLA’s DeShaun Foster reveals senior lineman out for season

The Bruins will be without one of their veteran tackles for the remainder of the college football season.

The UCLA Bruins have struggled along the offensive line in their first season in the Big Ten. This week, head coach DeShaun Foster delivered some difficult news.

According to Tracy McDannald, Foster revealed that senior offensive tackle Jaylan Jeffers is out for the season. Injured against the Washington Huskies, the Oregon transfer will not finish out the season for the Bruins.

Jeffers’ injury comes at a time when the Bruins are fighting to get to a .500 record by the end of the season, with rival USC coming to town.

The impact of Jeffers’ injury is yet to be seen, but given UCLA’s offensive line woes, expect a significant drop off in production with the veteran tackle sidelined.

Thankfully for the Bruins, the Trojans’ pass rush has been nearly non-existent, averaging only 1.4 sacks per game and ranked 113th in college football. That said, the Bruins will need to get the quick-pass game going in order to hide their deficiency at tackle this Saturday.

USC dealing with flu ‘outbreak’ days before UCLA rivalry game

This isn’t good for USC.

The UCLA Bruins and USC Trojans face off in a rivalry game on Saturday in LA. Unfortunately, the year has not been great for either the Bruins or the Trojans.

To make matters worse for USC, Lincoln Riley mentioned the team is dealing with a flu bug going into the game, per Ryan Kartje of The Los Angeles Times.

“Lincoln Riley sounded pretty sick today when he spoke with reporters, while several USC players missed practice. Riley said the team’s flu outbreak got “a little bit” worse early this week, but he’s hopeful today was the peak of the outbreak.”

It’s a tough blow for USC, who is coming off a close win over Nebraska in Week 12. USC is 5-5 on the year after a 3-1 start, but things have turned the wrong way for USC.

If the flu bug gets worse, it could cause some issues for USC on Saturday.

DeShaun Foster estimates how many recruits will be at UCLA vs. USC

The Bruins are likely to draw hundreds of recruits as they take on rival USC.

The UCLA Bruins take on the USC Trojans this weekend, renewing one of college football’s greatest rivalries. Now, taking their rivalry to the Big Ten, the Bruins are looking for more than just bragging rights as serious bowl implications take center stage.

If that were not enough, there are tons of prospective recruits who will be in attendance. According to Tracy McDannald of UCLA Rivals, head coach DeShaun Foster estimated that upwards of 700 recruits could be at the Rose Bowl on Saturday. As a result, the Bruins have an incredible opportunity.

For prospective recruits, rivalry games are the perfect way to showcase a program’s ability, pride, and amenities. Add to that the Rose Bowl’s historic charm and UCLA could sway some undecided recruits with just one win.

At 4-6 this season, the Bruins have, in many ways, overachieved relative to expectation. With a talented 2025 recruiting class on the way, the Bruins have a chance to improve their recruiting board and take down their biggest rival at home on Saturday.
