The latest injury update on Commanders QB Jayden Daniels

What’s the latest on Commanders QB Jayden Daniels?

The Washington Commanders had a scare on Sunday when rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels landed awkwardly on his chest and was removed from the game. The Commanders indicated a rib injury and Daniels did not return.

Washington won the game over Carolina, 40-7, so Daniels didn’t need to return. During Sunday’s game, Daniels’ mother tweeted that her son was fine. Daniels rejoined his teammates on the sideline after going into the locker room for an X-ray.

After the game, head coach Dan Quinn said he had no update on Daniels. However, ESPN NFL insider Jeremy Fowler indicated good news for Daniels and the Commanders.

On Monday, Fox NFL insider Jordan Schultz had the latest on Daniels.

#Commanders rookie QB sensation Jayden Daniels is undergoing tests today to determine the severity of his rib injury, per sources. Initial tests on Sunday showed no fractures, but further tests today and possibly in the coming days will provide more clarity.

That’s good news. However, Washington will play it safe with Daniels. The Commanders will not rush him back for next week’s showdown with the Chicago Bears and No. 1 overall pick Caleb Williams if he’s not 100%.

Quinn speaks to the media at 3:30 p.m. ET Monday.

Dennis Allen says Saints starting CB suffered broken femur vs. Broncos

Dennis Allen shared an update on New Orleans Saints cornerback Paulson Adebo following his leg injury. A broken femur has likely ended his season:

Head coach Dennis Allen shared an update on New Orleans Saints cornerback Paulson Adebo following his leg injury in the team’s 33-10 loss to the Denver Broncos on Thursday night, saying that Adebo had suffered a broken femur.

Adebo was carted off the field following a play in which he went in to help tackle Broncos running back Javonte Williams, but collided awkwardly and was unable to get back to his feet. He exited the game in a vacuum splint, before he was taken to a local hospital for further treatment. Allen added that he was set to have surgery immediately on Thursday night.

The prognosis looks very much like Adebo will be out for the rest of the season, which bodes poorly for both him and a struggling Saints team as he was making a lot of plays  in the secondary. The Saints defensive back has been a strong piece of what they have been able to get right on the defensive side of the ball, leading the team in passes defensed (10) and interceptions (3), but he’s also led in the categories of penalty yards and defensive pass interference fouls. He was a bit of a boom-or-bust player in coverage, but they needed every takeaway and pass broken up he gave them.

Adebo will be bound for free agency this offseason, so what happens with him moving forward will be something to watch. For now we’ll wish him  a full and speedy recovery.

Saints starting cornerback carted off the field vs. Broncos

Paulson Adebo was carted off against the Broncos with a serious leg injury. Rookie cornerback Kool-Aid McKinstry stepped into the lineup:

New Orleans Saints starting cornerback Paulson Adebo suffered a brutal leg injury in the second quarter against the Denver Broncos on Thursday night. Safety Jordan Howden tackled Broncos running back Javonte Williams, and they collided with Adebo right on his upper leg when he crashed in to assist with the tackle.

Adebo was clearly in pain after the play and unable to get up. The medical staff brought a cart out for the cornerback, and he was fitted with a vacuum splint to stabilize his leg.

Rookie corner Kool-Aid McKinstry stepped in to substitute Adebo. He and Alontae Taylor will split time on the outside opposite Marshon Lattimore. McKinstry started against the Dallas Cowboys in Week 2 when Lattimore was out with injury. Taylor played outside when they were in base defense, and slid into the slot in nickel defense.

This looks like a season ending injury. What it does is give the Saints a chance to get an evaluation of the rookie. McKinstry seemed like a pick who would contribute more in his second year.

That timeline has been pushed up. The injury is a tough blow for Adebo. He was entering a contract year.

Reports: All-Pro Saints WR dealing with ‘concerning’ knee injury

Rashid Shaheed is dealing with a ‘concerning’ knee injury, per multiple reports. The Saints could be missing their two best wide receivers against the Broncos:

This isn’t what you want to see. NewOrleans.Football’s Nick Underhill and NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport each reported Monday that New Orleans Saints wide receiver Rashid Shaheed is dealing with a knee injury that may cause him to miss some time. Underhill added that Shaheed suffered the injury in the fourth quarter of Sunday’s loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

It’s definitely worth watching for updates on Shaheed’s status; Rapoport shared that his source called the receiver’s injury concerning, and that “His  status going forward is TBD.” Underhill says the Saints will know once Shaheed’s test results come in.

Losing him would all-but cripple the offense. Chris Olave is already out with  a concussion and is unlikely to clear protocol in time to play Thursday night against the Denver Broncos. That leaves veteran backup Cedrick Wilson Jr. on the 53-man roster with rookies Bub Means and Mason Tipton. The Saints would have to call up either Equanimeous St. Brown, Kevin Austin Jr., or Jermaine Jackson from the practice squad just to fill out the gameday lineup. You can see why the Saints have been trying so hard to trade for Davante  Adams.

On top of his duties as a receiver, Shaheed has won All-Pro and Pro Bowl  recognition for his skills as a returner. He just scored a touchdown on a 54-yard punt return to keep his team alive against the Buccaneers. You hope he doesn’t have to miss much time, but every game is critical after a 2-4 start.

Saints share another long injury report, but with good news on Taysom Hill

The Saints shared another long injury report before this week’s Broncos game, but with good news on one of their best players. Taysom Hill is progressing well:

The New Orleans Saints shared another long injury report before this week’s  Thursday night game with the Denver Broncos, but it wasn’t all bad news. There’s a welcome update on of their best players. Taysom Hill (rib) is progressing well after missing the last two games with a fractured rib, having also dealt with a bruised lung earlier this season. He would have been a limited participant had the team practiced at full speed on Monday.

But because it’s a short week, the Saints only held a walkthrough, so the injury report is sharing estimations rather than real participation updates. And the training staff still needed to attend to 17 different players. Whether that means simply taping up a sore ankle or helping them through a three-week rehab program, it’s still a heavy workload. Certainly heavier than should be necessary at this point in the season.

We’ll get a better idea about everyone’s status after practice on Tuesday, but here’s the latest on everyone from Rashid Shaheed and Pete Werner (who wouldn’t have practiced) to Payton Turner and Alvin Kamara (who would’ve been limited) as well as Tyrann Mathieu and Willie Gay Jr. (who would’ve been full-go):

Saints’ team doctors have sought advice on treating Derek Carr’s injury

The Saints’ doctors can’t just keep doing what they’ve been doing. They consulted with Texas after Quinn Ewers suffered the same injury as Derek Carr:

The New Orleans Saints will be without starting quarterback Derek Carr for  a few more weeks, which gives Spencer Rattler an opportunity to learn on the job and take more live reps. But it’s not like the Saints are planning to keep Carr on ice forever. They want him back in the lineup, and their doctors have been doing their homework to devise the best plan for treating his oblique muscle injury.

Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers suffered a similar oblique strain, which is an unusual injury for a football player. But the school’s medical staff treated him well and Ewers only missed two games, plus a bye week, before returning against Oklahoma in the “Red River Rivalry” game. Ewers scored a touchdown pass and ran for another score in the Longhorns’ 34-3 rout on Saturday.

And on the broadcast, FOX Sports sideline reporter Holly Rowe shared an interesting footnote. She said the Saints had reached out to consult with Texas’ doctors on how they treated Ewers so effectively.

“It’s such a rare injury, it’s actually something that we see in baseball pitchers and volleyball players,” Rowe said, misspeaking and calling Carrr by his older brother’s name, “Actually David Carr in the NFL had a similar injury, they reached out to Texas this week to find out how they’re treating him, treating Quinn Ewers, because he has looked good. A lot of different techniques.”

That misstep aside (it’s not the first time the Carr brothers have been confused for one another, and it won’t be the last), this is good information. There’s nothing unusual about medical professionals consulting with each other especially for rare conditions like this one. The best surgeons in the world still sit through seminars and visit universities for workshops to learn how to better treat their patients.

But that hasn’t stopped fans on social media from laughing at the Saints’ expense — what kind of sports doctors can’t treat sports injuries? That seems to be a negative response due to all the frustration the team has had with injuries over the years, which is a little unfair. It would be more concerning if the Saints weren’t looking for help when working outside their area of expertise. They can’t just keep doing what they’ve been doing and hope for different results.

UPDATE: Former Wisconsin quarterback suffered season-ending injury in Florida’s loss to Tennessee

Tough news for a former Badger:

This story was updated to add new information.

Former Wisconsin quarterback Graham Mertz will miss the remainder of the 2024 season after suffering a torn ACL during Florida‘s 23-17 loss to Tennessee, head coach Billy Napier announced on Monday.

Mertz suffered the noncontact injury immediately after throwing a touchdown pass to put the Gators up 10-0 on the Volunteers with 7:18 remaining in the third quarter. He later returned to the Florida sideline on crutches — hinting at today’s news.

Related: How Wisconsin’s recent transfer departures fared in Week 7 of college football season

The former Badger completed 11 of 15 passing for 125 yards and a touchdown before exiting the game. Freshman QB D.J. Lagway entered in relief. He went 9 of 17 passing for 98 yards, one touchdown and an interception down the stretch as the Gators’ upset bid fell short in overtime.

The news of a season-ending injury is tough for a player in Mertz who had found his stride at Florida. The sixth-year senior completed 73.7% of his passes in 1 1/2 years as Florida’s starter. Those passes have gone for 3,694 yards, 26 touchdowns and just five interceptions. Florida went 7-9 in that span against a brutally tough SEC landscape.

Most recently, Mertz had scored six touchdowns (five passing, one rushing) and thrown zero interceptions in the Gators’ last three games — almost three season-changing victories until Saturday’s game turned into a loss.

The former Wisconsin signal-caller transferred to Florida before the 2023 season after four years at Wisconsin — three as the Badgers’ starter (2020-22).

This injury is an unfortunate end what was likely going to be Mertz’s final collegiate season.

UPDATE (1:16 p.m.): Napier confirmed reports that Mertz’s injury was season-ending

UPDATE (2:24 p.m.): Mertz issued a statement confirming the diagnosis

Tyrann Mathieu won’t return vs. Buccaneers due to wrist injury

Tyrann Mathieu won’t return against the Buccaneers due to a wrist injury. It’s more adversity to deal with on a short week before their next game:

Things went from bad to worse for the New Orleans Saints defense in Sunday’s game with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Starting safety and team captain Tyrann Mathieu left early with an elbow injury, and was later downgraded. He was ruled out and didn’t return in the second half.

The Saints were already shorthanded at safety with Will Harris going on  injured reserve before the game. After Mathieu went down their only active options were Jordan Howden, Johnathan Abram (called up from the practice squad, and who played through a back injury), and special teams ace J.T. Gray, who has never seen much action on defense.

It’s more losses than a team can reasonably handle, when guys are having to come in from the special teams units and practice squad and handle starter’s reps. It’s just more adversity for Dennis Allen’s team to navigate through the short week before Thursday night’s game against Sean Payton and the Denver Broncos.
