Who gets a bye?

The Mountain West basketball season is wrapping up with its final week of the regular season and the byes are of vast importance. For those who are just tuning into college basketball now that March is right in front of us, the Mountain West allows five teams with a bye for the conference tournament.

Leading into Monday night’s games, the five teams with a bye are Wyoming, Boise State, Colorado State, and San Diego State are locks. The last bye up for grabs is UNLV and Fresno State. The Rebels are one-game ahead of the Bulldogs.

Fresno State has three games left with UNLV only two. The Bulldogs schedule is quite difficult as they are facing New Mexico on Monday night but then it gets really difficult with back-to-back road games against San Diego State and Wyoming.

As for UNLV, they host Wyoming and then go on the road to face New Mexico to wrap the season.

Looking at those two schedules, it seems that the Rebels have the edge for that final bye spot.

Projected Winner?

We have been using TeamRankings.com which is projecting the conference tournaments and the past two weeks it has been San Diego State as the favorite.

The Aztecs are still the favorite despite being very likely to be the fourth seed and their percentage to win is at 22.34% and that is slightly ahead of Boise State who is sitting at 22.06%. There are five total teams with 10% chance to win and Wyoming is not one of them.

1.) Wyoming

Wyoming remains the top team in this iteration of Mountain West power rankings. But they’ve lost two of their last three games and sit 1.5 games behind Boise State in the Mountain West regular-season race. Superstar Graham Ike only scored eight points on 3-13 shooting in Wednesday’s loss to Colorado State.

The Cowboys host Nevada this weekend.

2.) Boise State

Boise State snagged the narrow over Utah State, as the game stayed tight throughout. A Rylan Jones three-pointer chopped the lead to 57-55 with less than three minutes left before the Broncos exploded on an 11-2 run to finish out the contest. Marcus Shaver Jr scored 20 points on 6-9 shooting in the 11-point victory. On Tuesday, Boise State carried a 30-20 lead into halftime before San Diego State stormed back, taking the lead with 24 seconds left on an outstanding play leading to Matt Bradley finding Nathan Mensah for an alley-oop. A questionable foul call on the other end gave Abu Kigab two free throws with less than two seconds left — Kigab drilled both with ease.

Boise State travels to the Mountain West tournament site in Vegas, where they’ll face Bryce Hamilton and UNLV.

3.) Colorado State

It’s almost like the 2021-22 UNLV Runnin’ Rebels have some bizarre superpowers over Colorado State, as the Rams lost their second battle with UNLV this year. It adds another loss, but only of the quadrant two variety, so Colorado State’s at large resume remains solid. CSU bounced back on Wednesday, beating Wyoming by six in Fort Collins. David Roddy scored 26 points in the contest.

The Rams look to add another quality win on Sunday, facing Utah State in Logan.

4.) San Diego State

San Diego State looked to potentially turn a corner offensively, but the issues crept up again in the loss to Boise State. Even when the game got close, there wasn’t a ton of ball movement leading to open shots. The idea of missing the NCAA Tournament is starting to get serious; the Aztecs only hold five wins in the first two quadrants, which doesn’t help the committee select them into the dance.

SDSU hosts San Jose State this weekend in a must-win game to keep their tournament dreams afloat.

5.) UNLV

If you’re trying to zero in on a bid-stealing contender from the Mountain West, look no further than the host team. That’s the UNLV Rebels, who blew out Colorado State for the second time this season; Bryce Hamilton only had 20 points, but the Runnin’ Rebels stout defense gave the Rams problems all game. UNLV defeated Nevada by double-digits for the second time in Reno.

UNLV doesn’t have any NCAA Tournament chance aside from making a run in the Mountain West tournament but can play spoiler when meeting up with Boise State on Saturday. Even though there’s only a sliver of hope for the NCAA Tournament — making the NIT is very much in the realm of possibility.

6.) Fresno State

The Bulldogs followed their five-game losing skid up by knocking off Air Force. Star forward Orlando Robinson refound his conference player of the year caliber form, scoring 26 points while hitting eight of 11 shots. After Robinson went 6-24 with 16 points in two home losses to UNLV and San Diego State, that’s a promising sign.

Fresno State doesn’t take the court again until Monday when New Mexico comes to town.

7.) Nevada

Grant Sherfield scored 46 points while adding 18 assists in Nevada’s two victories over San Jose State last week, with the potential to grow their win streak to four games when facing UNLV. The Wolf Pack fell short and were short-handed as Desmond Cambridge Jr didn’t dress for the game. Sherfield and Warren Washington contributed 31 of the team’s 54 points in their loss.

It isn’t easy to beat Nevada when the two guards are clicking, and they’ll face Wyoming in Laramie as the Cowboys look to punch their NCAA ticket.

8.) Utah State

Utah State snapped their four-game losing streak on Tuesday when New Mexico went to Logan. Justin Bean scored 21 points, and Brandon Horvath added 19 points in the convincing victory over New Mexico. It’s surprising the Aggies conference record is 7-9, but don’t sleep on Ryan Odom’s team.

9.) San Jose State

The Spartans notched their first win since league play started, knocking off New Mexico 71-55. Omari Moore led the winning effort with 18 points on 9-14 shooting while dishing out ten assists. While there won’t be a high number in the win column, there are plenty of positive takeaways from Tim Miles’s first season in San Jose.

The Spartans face an arduous task with San Diego State this weekend.

10.) New Mexico

The Lobos have immense potential when Jaelen House and Jamal Mashburn Jr make plays, but they’ve lost three consecutive games by 66 combined points. I see UNM very comparable to last year’s Wyoming squad — first-year head coaches with talented teams, but there are some real ebbs-and-flows. In the San Jose State loss, House only scored 14 points on 3-15 shooting. House and Mashburn Jr only scored 16 total points on Tuesday in the 25 point loss in Logan.

UNM will head home to face Air Force, which hasn’t won in over a month.

11.) Air Force

Air Force lost eight consecutive games dating back to January 25th — during the losing streak, the Falcons haven’t held a team to less than 1.00 points per possession.

Air Force will meet the tough New Mexico offensive on Saturday in the PIT.

UNLV extends its winning streak to three, taking the Tuesday night contest against inter-state rival Nevada, 62-54.

With the win Tuesday night, the Runnin’ Rebels swept Nevada for the first time since the 2013-14 season. UNLV shot nearly 50%, outscoring the Wolf Pack 49-38 in the second half. This scoring spree in the second half was led by none other than Rebels leading scorer, Bryce Hamilton. Hamilton led both teams with 27 points, on 10-25 shooting. The 6’4 guard also grabbed eight rebounds in what would be yet again an impressive night leading the Rebels.

Both teams started slow, with turnovers and missed shots leading to a slim 8-7 Nevada lead at the first U-16 media timeout. UNLV then went on an 8-2 run to go up four points with 11 minutes in the first half. Sherfield was able to score back-to-back baskets to tie the contest at 15 with eight minutes to go in the half. In a low-scoring, defense-dominated half, Nevada would hold on to a 26-23 lead heading into the locker room.

The second half was where the Rebels won the contest. Hamilton scored 19 of his 27 points in the second half, which directly correlated to the win for UNLV. Nevada’s gauge of success, Grant Sherfield, scored 11 points and got little to no help in the second half. The Wolf Pack went scoreless for four full minutes late in the contest. Nevada couldn’t get a bucket from the seven-minute mark to the three-minute mark in the game. The Rebels were able to go on a 10-0 run which proved to be the dagger for the Wolf Pack.

This game was a true win-by-committee for UNLV. All nine Rebel players that saw the court scored a basket. Justin Webster was UNLV’s next leading scorer with eight points. UNLV seemed to have more energy, fighting for every rebound. Despite the height disadvantage, the Rebels out-rebounded Nevada, 41-34. UNLV also grabbed 13 offensive rebounds, which led to 16 second-chance points.

One other huge difference in this contest was the bench productivity for the Wolf Pack. Nevada’s second-leading scorer, Desmond Cambridge Jr. was sidelined in this game, which further limited Nevada’s choices on offense. Grant Sherfield led the Wolf Pack with 19 points and eight assists. Sherfield got some much-needed help on offense from Warren Washington. In the first game back from nearly a month out due to injury, the 7’0 big man finished with a double-double, scoring 12 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. Outside of those two, Nevada got little to no productivity on offense, leading to a disastrous second half. The Wolf Pack played from behind and relied heavily on the three-point ball, shooting 3-18 (16%) in the second half. UNLV wins in Reno, 62-54.

MVP

The MVP for this game has to be Bryce Hamilton. Hamilton finished with 27 points, eight rebounds, and three assists. However, it was what Hamilton did in the second half that truly sealed things up for UNLV. The 6’4 guard scored 19 points in the second half, leading the Rebels to the first sweep of Nevada since the David Carter era.

Up Next

UNLV (17-11, 9-6) hosts the Boise State Broncos (22-6, 13-2) in a 7 PM PST matchup on Saturday. Nevada (12-14, 6-9) travels to Wyoming (22-4, 11-2) to play a hot Cowboys team Saturday at 5 PM PST.

The conference tournament for the Mountain West is a few weeks away and things are getting interesting.

Wyoming was ranked but then lost to New Mexico and the conference seemingly has games where the underdogs are getting a win here or there. Now there is a circle of wins and losses with San Jose State topping New Mexico.

As for how the tournament works, if you are unaware, there are byes for the top five teams. As of the third week of February, those teams that are not playing in the opening round are Boise State, Wyoming, San Diego State, Colorado State, and host UNLV.

There are still enough games left for Utah State, Nevada, and Fresno State to get into that top five and get a bye for the conference tournament.

The top four is also close as well with the uneven schedule of games due to COVID-19 pauses and even if it is just one game it can make a difference in being a top-four seed which is very valuable in this tournament.

TeamRankings.com put together their formula and for the second week in a row they have San Diego State as a solid favorite with getting nearly 1 in 4 chances to win the tournament. The Aztecs opponent on Tuesday night vs. Boise State could be a preview of the Mountain West title game.

Wyoming took a drop after that loss to New Mexico and despite being a potential regular season champ are given the sixth-best odds and behind Utah State who has been inconsistent this year but could pull an upset.

Less than one month remains until Selection Sunday, and the Mountain West looks well-positioned to send four teams dancing.

1.) Wyoming – 76 points

Wyoming had another tough test facing scorching hot Utah State in Laramie on Tuesday — the game ended up heading to extra frames as Graham Ike made two free throws with 16 seconds left, and the Aggies didn’t get a shot off before the final buzzer sounded. In the extra five minutes, Ike hit a shot with two seconds left, which ended up being the game-winner. That’s a solid home win where Wyoming was only favorited by 1.5 points, as the Aggies rank favorably in all metrics. The Cowboys can’t afford losses to bottom-half Mountain West foes, and they made easy work of San Jose State 74-52, led by Ike’s 25 points, 18 rebound outing.

Winning the two games earned Jeff Linder’s squad a spot in this week’s AP top 25 rankings, entering the poll at number 22. They head to New Mexico to face the Lobos — in a tough environment, as the PIT provides a massive home-court advantage. After that, Wyoming finishes the week returning home to host Air Force over the weekend.

2.) Colorado State – 69 points

Colorado State won a trio of games last week, stretching their winning streak to four consecutive wins. The Rams looked well-positioned to take the road victory in Reno, with David Roddy scoring 29 points on 11-14 shooting in the double-digit win. Roddy was three rebounds and two assists shy of recording his first college triple-double as the Rams coasted to their 65-50 victory over Fresno State. Some controversy emerged on Super Bowl Sunday; no, I’m not talking about Logan Wilson’s holding call on 3rd and goal either.

Let’s set the stage, Isaiah Stevens drives to the tin, and Abu Kigab strips the ball away with around seconds remaining. Kigab was bumped by Isaiah Stevens and no there was no foul called, but an inadvertent whistle led to a 10-minute stoppage, trying to figure out what exactly happened. The game then went to overtime, where Roddy sealed the ball with an emphatic block to nix any chance of Marcus Shaver tying the game again. A 3-0 week is what the doctor ordered for the Rams to stay alive in the league’s regular-season title race.

Two sneaky road games await — Facing New Mexico and UNLV, two games that could damage an NCAA Tournament bid more than help improve it.

3.) Boise State – 63 points

Boise State started off slow against UNLV, and the lack of Emmanuel Akot was noticeable on the defensive end, but they found their stride late in the contest, winning 69-63. The loss to Colorado State is hard to swallow for the Broncos — of course, they faced an outstanding basketball team, but the missed blocking foul is the takeaway from an otherwise entertaining game. Mountain West freshman of the year Tyson Degenhart tallied 16 points while knocking down 4-4 shots from three. The Broncos could use Akot back as he’s the team’s point guard and an integral part of the defensive attack.

The Broncos head to Colorado Springs on Wednesday and return home to host Utah State on Saturday.

4.) San Diego State – 55 points

Last week further showed why San Diego State could fall short of earning an NCAA Tournament bid — the offense can go in long lulls of not scoring if Matt Bradley doesn’t put on his superman cape and drop buckets. The Aztecs had wins over San Jose State and Air Force, but neither was comfortable. SDSU ranks 222nd in KenPom’s defensive efficiency ranking, despite ranking second in defensive efficiency.

This week, the Aztecs face two difficult tests against Utah State and Fresno State.

What If The Mountain West Tournament Started Today?

5.) Fresno State – 49 points

On Friday, Fresno State couldn’t crack 60 points in their road loss to Colorado State, falling 65-50. Orlando Robinson led the scoring charge with 24 points, but nobody else reached double-figures. The loss marks the second consecutive Bulldogs loss dating back to February 6th’s Wyoming loss. The team isn’t positioned for an NCAA Tournament bid unless they make a surge in the league tournament — however, an NIT bid looks very much in the works.

UNLV comes to Fresno on Wednesday, where Mountain West player of the year candidates Bryce Hamilton and Fresno’s Robinson try leading their respective teams to victory. Then San Diego State comes town in what should make for a defensive battle, first to 60 wins!

The Mountain West basketball tournament is less than one month away beginning on March 9 with the opening round games, and the championship on Saturday late afternoon.

The league this year has been very competitive with a potential four-bid Mountain West in the cards with six teams in the top 60 of the NET rating.

At the top of the league is a tie between Wyoming and Boise State who each have a single loss and which happened to come against each other.

There is going to be an uneven number of games played and currently, at the top of the conference, Wyoming, Boise State, and Colorado State all have 10 wins in league play.

The top five teams. get a bye so the last team to avoid the opening round game at this point is Fresno State by being a half-game ahead of UNLV, which will be hosting the tournament.

A bye is going to be huge in this tournament to just avoid an extra game and a pesky opponent.

Not getting a bye as of now includes spoiler makers Utah State and UNLV. The Rebels playing on their home court and having Bryce Hamilton who has the ability to go off and score a ton of points is dangerous. Utah State will be a tough out despite their record as their problem has been inconsistent play; the Aggies do have a win over San Diego State and a few close losses to Boise State and Wyoming.

Early Tournament Projections

With the Mountain West being so close with quality teams. TeamRankings.com has its conference tournament projections out and it is a bit surprising to see San Diego State as the favorite to win it all despite being at 7-3. However, their schedule will have fewer games and there was the controversial ending vs. Colorado State.

Speaking of the Rams, they are nearly tied for the best odds with the Aztecs. Five teams have at least a 10% chance to win it all from these projections. This explains even more why getting a bye is huge, and especially so for Utah State is pegged in the opening round game and neck-to-neck with current No. 1 Wyoming.

We’re looking at the power rankings post Week 12 of the College Basketball season.

1. Wyoming – 73 points

Last week, the Cowboys faced a daunting season-defining three-game stretch, facing Boise State, Colorado State, and Fresno State. If they lost all three games, they would’ve seen their at-large resume hopes dissipate right in front of their eyes. Instead, they swept the week, starting with an overtime thriller over Colorado State, thanks to Hunter Maldonado’s 35-point outing. A few evenings later, Ike exploded with 33 points and 14 rebounds, leading to the win over the extremely hot Boise State Broncos. Just to finish the week off right, Maldonado scored 21 in the 61-59 victory in the Save Mart Center.

Jeff Linder’s squad came in just eight points behind No. 25 Xavier in this week’s AP Poll, making them the 26th ranked team. Barring a loss to Utah State or San Jose State, expect Wyoming to find their name in next week’s AP rankings.

2. Boise State – 71 points

The Broncos dropped their first game since the calendar flipped to 2022. The loss to Wyoming ended a 14-game winning streak, which put the Broncos firmly in the NCAA Tournament field. Abu Kigab shined with 26 points in the narrow loss, but defending Wyoming’s Ike proved difficult in the game’s final minutes. Boise State had no issues with San Jose State in the following game, winning a 76-60 contest. Emmanuel Akot was absent from the contest, putting Max Rice in the starting lineup, and Marcus Shaver pivoted to lead guard duties. Freshman sensation Tyson Degenhart tallied a career-high 23 points on 6-9 shooting in 34 minutes.

The Broncos host Bryce Hamilton & UNLV on Wednesday, before meeting Colorado State on Super Bowl Sunday, in a rescheduled game from last month.

3. Colorado State – 65 points

After dropping the overtime thriller in Laramie, the Rams were quickly in the midst of a two-game losing streak. They had to get some revenge on San Diego State to avoid losing three consecutive — the Aztecs blasted CSU by 30 points in the first matchup.

Colorado State led by 14 points with less than six minutes remaining. It looked like the Rams would coast to victory as time elapsed off the clock to get the train back on the tracks. SDSU sparked an 11-0 run in the final two minutes, taking the lead with less than 10 seconds left, thanks to Lamont Butler’s three-pointer. Directly after the bucket, David Roddy drilled a mid-range jumper, giving CSU the advantage right back, ending up being the game-deciding shot. Roddy scored a team-best 22 points in the contest.

Colorado State faces a tough three-game stretch — starting in Reno on Tuesday, then returning home for a Friday game against Fresno before hitting the road for Boise on Sunday.

4. San Diego State – 51 points

Matt Bradley spearheaded the Aztecs comeback attempt in Fort Collins, scoring 29 points on 7-19 shooting, but made 9-10 free throws. Aside from Bradley, nobody scored more than eight points. Once again, on Sunday, Bradley decided to do everything scoring-wise, leading the team with 26 points and was the only player in double-figures in the narrow win over Nevada.

The lack of offense outside of Bradley remains an issue — San Diego State ranks 233rd in KenPom’s offensive efficiency. Sure, the team ranks 1st in defensive efficiency, but you have to be flawless on defense when the offense struggles to that degree.

SDSU faces Air Force and San Jose State this week in must-win games to keep their NCAA Tournament hopes alive.

5. Utah State – 49 points

Don’t look now: Utah State has won five consecutive games after starting 1-5 in Mountain West play. Even more encouraging — each of those games got decided by double-digit margins. Justin Bean regained conference player of the year form, scoring 32 points against UNLV.

On Tuesday, the Aggies could strengthen their NCAA Tournament, facing Wyoming in Laramie. That won’t be an easy game, but they enter the game on that winning streak.

A former Sooner has found his new home as sophomore forward Victor Iwuakor is heading to become a member of the UNLV Runnin’ Rebels, per a team release.

Iwuakor was reported as entering the transfer portal just last Thursday, so it didn’t take him much time to find his new landing spot. This move seems entirely logical due to the fact that his former assistant coach Carlin Hartman is also headed to Las Vegas next season and the new head coach of the program is Kevin Kruger, son of former Oklahoma head coach Lon Kruger.

Needless to say, the familiarity is there for Iwuakor as he heads to a situation with coaches who know his skill set and how to properly utilize him in the coming seasons. A lightning rod player off of the bench, his athleticism was as good as anybodys. With more opportunity and refinement, it is entirely within reason to think that Iwuakor can be a quality contributor for UNLV moving forward.

Oklahoma basketball assistant coach Carlin Hartman joining Kevin Kruger’s staff at UNLV

Oklahoma basketball assistant coach Carlin Hartman is joining Kevin Kruger’s coaching staff at UNLV.

A season of turnover and change for Oklahoma Sooners basketball continues as assistant coach Carlin Hartman will be leaving the program this offseason to join the staff at UNLV under new head coach Kevin Kruger, son of Lon Kruger.

This shouldn’t come as a huge surprise to many, as with Lon Kruger announcing his retirement last week it seemed like Hartman was likely going to be heading out unless he was able to land the head coaching gig himself, which seemed like a relatively slim possibility.

This move really makes sense for all parties involved. For Hartman, it allows him to go work under someone he knows well in former Sooners assistant Kevin Kruger. For Oklahoma, it allows the new coaching hire to bring in his own assistant with him without much of a hang-up.

Hartman had been an assistant on Lon Kruger’s staff since 2016, spending the previous two years as an assistant at Rice. Widely looked at as one of the better assistant coaches in the country, it seems like only a matter of time before he is able to land a head coaching job himself, with some fans even clamoring for him to take over in Norman this season.

Another potential candidate for the new coaching gig of the Sooners is off the market, and Sooners Wire will continue to provide updates on the coaching search as they become available.
