UNC women’s basketball stays put in AP Poll

The North Carolina women’s basketball program remains ranked No. 24 on this week’s Associated Press poll.

The North Carolina women’s basketball team will enter the 2024 year ranked in the AP Top 25 poll.

After beating Oklahoma 61-52 at the Jump Man Invitational, UNC remains ranked at No. 24, as they turn their attention to conference play for the remainder of the regular season. The Tar Heels have had their battles in non-conference play with some juggernaut defensive performances but failed to get the job done against ranked opponents.

Despite not beating any of the ranked opponents they’ve faced, they were able to pick up some moral victory by giving No. 1 South Carolina their toughest game yet, showing they can compete with the nation’s best program.

UNC will host the Clemson Tigers on New Year’s Eve, with big games on their schedule for January, playing No. 13 Notre Dame, No. 22 FSU, and No. 19 Louisville in a two-week span.

Juggernaut defense leads the way in a 61-52 victory over Oklahoma

The North Women’s basketball team’s juggernaut defense leads the way in a 61-52 victory over Oklahoma.

The North Carolina women’s basketball program secured their eighth victory this year, beating Oklahoma 61-52 Tuesday night at the Jump Man Invitational.

UNC had a slow start to the game, as Oklahoma grabbed the lead early beating the Tar Heels 23-16 in the first quarter. The second quarter saw UNC’s defensive abilities lead the show, giving the Sooners fits to surge back to tie things up at 36 a piece at the half.

UNC’s juggernaut defense continued to dominate in the second half, allowing only four points in the third quarter and 12 in the fourth. UNC’s offensive efforts were led by star guard Deja Kelly, who finished with 21 points and six rebounds. Kelly also added to her UNC legacy in this game by scoring 1500 points as a Tar Heel.

The Tar Heels will get a nice break, with the next game coming on New Year’s Eve against the Clemson Tigers.

UNCWBB slides up one spot in the new AP Poll

The North Carolina women’s basketball program slides up one spot to No.24 in this week’s AP Poll after going 1-0 last week.

The North Carolina women’s basketball team slid up one spot on this week’s Associated Press Poll to No. 24.

Much like the men’s basketball program, the UNC women’s team has had a gauntlet of games to start the season. After going 1-1 the week prior with a loss coming against No. 17 UCONN, it was nice the past week that UNC only had one game against a non-ranked Western Carolina, which they cruised into a 96-36 win.

The ACC presence continues to shine on the AP Poll, with six teams cracking the top 25. NC State continues to be the top-ranked ACC team (No.3) in the polls. If NC State can keep their record intact come February when they take on UNC, it could give the Tar Heels a significant leap in rankings come March madness.

UNC will take on Oklahoma Tuesday night as a part of the Jumpman Invitational, making way for a notable win if they can get the job done.

UNCWBB slides down one spot in the new AP Poll

The North Carolina women’s basketball program slides down one spot to No.25 in this week’s AP Poll after going 1-1 last week.

The North Carolina women’s basketball program claimed the last spot in this week’s Associated Press Poll rankings.

UNC slid down one spot from No. 24 to No. 25 after going 1-1 last week. They handled business against UNCG, beating the Spartans 81-66 before losing 76-64 to No.17 UCONN.

The Tar Heels had a tough start against ranked opponents, going 0-3 against teams in the AP top 25. Despite that, UNC has handled business against non-ranked opponents and nearly gave South Carolina their first upset of the season.

The schedule will ease up for UNC moving forward, with their next four games coming against non-ranked opponents.

UNC has shown the ability to fight with the big dogs in college basketball but has failed to close it when it matters. The other concern is their lack of scoring options.

North Carolina Tar Heel Maria Gakdeng shines in the ACC/SEC challenge against No. 1 South Carolina

The No. 24 North Carolina women’s basketball faced off against No. 1 South Carolina, nearly upsetting them in Chapel Hill.

A lot went right for UNC, as they used their juggernaut defense and rebounding to hinder South Carolina’s high-powered offense. Despite the 65-58 loss, UNC’s talent was on full display, with Boston College transfer [autotag]Maria Gakdeng[/autotag] stepping up for the Tar Heels in a significant way.

Gakdeng finished with eight points and ten rebounds while matchup against South Carolina star Kamilla Cardoso through the night. Gakdeng physical play down low helped keep Cardoso’s scoring in check, who averages 16.8 points per game and ended up with a season-low six points.

The game should give the program a boost of confidence even in the loss, seeing their ability to shut down a team like South Carolina. Gakdeng will be a big reason if UNC can dance long come March madness.

Social Media reacts to UNC’s near upset over South Carolina

Social media reacts to No. 24 UNC chippy game against No. 1 South Carolina, nearly leaving with the upset.

The North Carolina women’s basketball program hosted South Carolina for a special ACC/SEC challenge, and it was jumping from the start.

Despite being heavy underdogs against the No.1 school in the nation, UNC got out to a hot start, displaying juggernaut defense and keeping South Carolina off the boards.

The fast start came with it bruises as both teams got chippy with one another leading to double technicals. The physical game echoed with trash talk spilling over from the court to social media as fans couldn’t get enough of the back and forth.

What went right in the first half, didn’t translate to the second with South Carolina snagging the lead halfway through the third. To make matters worse for UNC, in the same period, Deja Kelly had a scary moment after hitting her head on the court.

The fourth quarter saw the return of Kelly and the Tar Heels fight, as the game continued to be neck to neck. However, South Carolina started to pour it on late, escaping from the Tar Heel upset.

Despite the loss, UNC proved they could compete with the best, going toe-to-toe with South Carolina and holding them to a season-low.

Let’s see how social media reacted to the chippy UNC vs South Carolina basketball game.

Tar Heels drops second game of the season

The North Carolina women’s basketball program lost their second game of the season in a stunning 65-64 loss to FGCU.

The North Carolina women’s basketball program dropped their second game of the season, losing 65-64 to FGCU.

On the heels of their heartbreaking 63-56 defeat to Kansas State, UNC experienced their second straight loss this time on the receiving end of the upset. Much like their loss against the Wildcats, UNC’s slow start hindered their late-game efforts.

FGCU came out swinging, dominating the Tar Heels in the 1st quarter 23-18. UNC did bounce back in the second quarter to outscore FGCU 15-8, but with the third going back to the Eagles, UNC couldn’t stop the upset from happening in the fourth despite having a one-point lead with 12 seconds left to play.

The tough outing should serve as a learning opportunity for the Tar Heels as they prepare for their SEC/ACC matchup against South Carolina.
