Tar Heels lose out on in-state OT to NC State

The UNC football program missed out on a 3-star offensive tackle in the 2023 class on Sunday.

Mack Brown and the UNC football program had a big past few weeks in terms of football recruiting, landing several recruits in the 2023 class. With the commitments, the Tar Heels climbed the recruiting rankings and find themselves inside the Top 25 nationally.

But on Sunday, the Tar Heels missed out on an in-state recruit.

Wilkes Central offensive tackle Kamen Smith ended his recruitment on Sunday, picking NC State over North Carolina, Virginia Tech and others in the process. The 6-foot-5, 275-pound Smith is a three-star recruit that had a total of 13 offers but only made visits to the Tar Heels, Wolfpack and Hokies.

Smith is ranked No. 738 nationally, the No. 64 offensive tackle and No. 23 player in the state of North Carolina per the 247Sports recruiting rankings.

UNC now focuses their attention to other recruits in the 2023 class as they look to keep building on the momentum they have.

UNC wide receiver commit already recruiting top 2023 target

A newly committed four-star wide receiver is already recruiting this top target to join him in Chapel Hill.

It was a big week for Mack Brown and the UNC football program, landing a handful of recruits and boosting their 2023 class to inside the Top 20. And the program may not be done yet, either.

With a long way to go in the recruiting cycle, UNC has a chance to add even more talent to the class.

One prospect they have their eyes on is four-star defensive lineman Jamaal Jarrett out of Greensboro. Jarrett is set to make his decision on July 19th and many think it’s between UNC and Georgia to land him. But one recent UNC commit is ready to start recruiting him to join the Chapel Hill class.

Four-star receiver Chris Culliver committed on Monday and is hoping to bring Jarrett to the class as evident by this tweet:

The 6-foot-6, 350-pound Jarrett is ranked No. 176 overall, the No. 26 defensive lineman and No. 3 player in the state of North Carolina per the 247Sports recruiting rankings. However, looking at his crystal ball, it does appear as if Georgia has the lead.

UNC will have to make up some ground in a hurry.

UNC football’s 2023 class moves into the top 20 after big week

After a big 10 or so days with multiple commitments, the UNC football program has shot up the 247Sports recruiting rankings.

Mack Brown and the UNC football program are reaping the rewards of a big week recruiting-wise for the team. In the past eight days, UNC has added several big recruits in the 2023 class, backed by Monday’s commitment from four-star wide receiver Chris Culliver.

Of the eight prospects that have committed since June 26th, three of them are four-star prospects. And that helped UNC improved its overall class ranking going from No. 43 just a few weeks ago to No. 18 in the 247Sports updated rankings. A huge jump for the program.

UNC is also No. 4 in the ACC rankings behind only Clemson, Miami and Louisville.

While UNC got off to a slow start with the 2023 class, things are starting to heat up for Brown and the staff. This flurry of commitments certainly has helped them and they may not be done just yet.

UNC has their eyes on several other prospects and recently made the top 5 for both four-star defensive back Braeden Marshall and four-star edge rusher Rico Walker. It’s clear that this class isn’t close to being finished and when it’s all said and done, UNC should find itself in the Top 25 rankings-wise.

UNC makes cut for four-star edge rusher

The UNC football program landed in the top five for this four-star edge rusher in the 2023 class.

Things are heating up for the UNC football program in terms of recruiting this Summer.

Not only have the Tar Heels landed multiple recruits over the past week to see their class climb into the top 25, they have also made the cut for a few prospects and their updated lists. We told you about the Tar Heels making the Top 5 for a four-star defensive back and now they are in the updated list for a four-star edge rusher.

Rico Walker made a key update to his recruitment at the start of July, cutting his list of 27 offers down to just five as he’s now focusing on Auburn, Florida, Maryland, North Carolina and Tennessee.

As you can see in the tweet above, Walker also announces that a commitment is coming soon. He didn’t set an official date but it’s likely he decides before the Summer is over.

Walker has completed official visits to Maryland and North Carolina in the last few weeks of June and could take some more visits before it’s all said and done.

The 6-foot-3, 233-pound edge rusher hails out of Hickory, North Carolina and is ranked No. 178 overall, No. 23 edge rusher, and the No. 4 player in the state of North Carolina per the 247Sports recruiting rankings.

UNC football lands four-star wide receiver in 2023 class

The UNC football program has added a four-star wide receiver in the 2023 recruiting class on Monday, continuing their hot streak.

The good news just keeps coming in for Mack Brown and the UNC football program. After adding several players to their 2023 class last week, the Tar Heels have added another recruit.

Four-star wide receiver [autotag]Chris Culliver[/autotag] announced on Monday that he is committing to North Carolina, becoming the latest player to join that 2023 “Jordan” class for the program. Culliver made his announcement on Monday night, picking the Tar Heels over 18 total offers and a top 7 list he announced last month.

Culliver was down to UNC, Virginia Tech, NC State, Ohio State, Appalachian State, Maryland and Florida State. But in the end it really felt like a two-team race between the Tar Heels and Hokies.

The 6-foot-3, 174-pound Culliver hails out of Maiden, North Carolina, and is the No. 313 overall recruit, No. 42 wide receiver, and No. 12 player in the state of North Carolina per 247Sports.

With the addition of Culliver, UNC now has 14 commitments in their 2023 recruiting class. They have also jumped inside the Top 25 in the 247Sports team rankings with their recent surge.

The UNC football program makes the top five for this four-star defensive back out of Florida.

It’s been a good week for Mack Brown and the UNC football program, landing several recruits for their 2023 class. But they also received some good news for a recruit that is not yet ready to commit.

Four-star defensive back Braeden Marshall provided an update to his recruitment on Sunday, narrowing his list of 32 offers down to just a top 5.

Marshall took to Twitter to reveal that he’s now focusing on UNC, UCF, Pitt, Nebraska, and Wisconsin. He’s also set to make his commitment on July 30th, picking between those five finalists.

The 5-foot-10, 170-pound defensive back hails out of Lake Mary, Florida and is ranked No. 394 overall, No. 41 defensive back and No. 78 player in the state of Florida per the 247Sports recruiting rankings.

Marshall was on UNC’s campus for an official visit at the end of June and also took visits to Pitt, UCF, and Wisconsin.

Four-star wide receiver sets commitment date

A four-star UNC football recruiting target has set his commitment date as his recruitment comes to an end.

Mack Brown and the UNC football program are hoping their hot streak on the recruiting trail continues this week. After landing seven prospects a week ago, including three on Friday, another top target of the Tar Heels is set to make his announcement.

Four-star wide receiver [autotag]Chris Culliver[/autotag] took to Twitter on Sunday to reveal that he is making his decision on Monday afternoon. Culliver set a time for 5:30 p.m. central as his recruitment comes to an end.

The 6-foot-3, 174-pound Culliver has a total of 18 offers but cut his list down to seven finalists: UNC, Virginia Tech, NC State, Ohio State, Appalachian State, Maryland and Florida State.

Culliver has taken two official visits in his recruitment as he was in Chapel Hill on June 17th and then followed it up with a trip to Virginia Tech on the 24th. The 247Sports Crystal Ball has UNC as the favorite with all three predictions.

The recruit is ranked No. 313 nationally, No. 42 wide receiver and the No. 12 player in the state of North Carolina per the 247Sports recruiting rankings.

Tar Heels add three-star OL to 2023 class

Mack Brown and the UNC football program added a three-star offensive lineman in the 2023 recruiting class.

The hot recruiting streak continued for Mack Brown and his UNC football program. On Saturday, a day after they landed three commitments, the Tar Heels added another player to their 2023 class.

Legacy prospect D.J. Geth pledged his verbal commitment to North Carolina, picking the Tar Heels over in-state South Carolina.

The Roebuck, South Carolina native had a total of 11 offers in his recruitment but made two visits, going to UNC and South Carolina before deciding to pick the Tar Heels. While UNC got a visit in early June, Geth took his visit to the Gamecocks in late June and UNC did enough to earn the commitment.

Geth has ties to UNC as his father, Ed, played basketball for the Tar Heels in the 90’s. His mother also graduated from the university.

The 6-foot-4, 300-pound interior offensive lineman is ranked No. 911 overall, No. 64 interior offensive lineman and No. 11 player in the state of South Carolina per the 247Sports recruiting rankings. His commitment gives UNC 13 total recruits in the 2023 which ranks No. 23 overall now.

Mack Brown and the UNC football program have added a four-star wide receiver to their 2023 recruiting class.

Friday was a big day for the UNC football program in terms of recruiting and their 2023 class. The day started off with a commitment from four-star edge rusher Jaybron Harvey and then a few hours later, three-star offensive lineman Robert Grigsby pledged his commitment.

Three-star offensive lineman commits to UNC football

The UNC football program has added a three-star offensive lineman to their 2023 recruiting class.

Mack Brown and the UNC football program have their second commitment of the day for the 2023 recruiting class.

Just a few hours after four-star edge rusher Jaybron Harvey announced he was committing to UNC, the Tar Heels landed a three-star offensive lineman as Robert Grigsby pledged his verbal to the program. Grigsby is the 11th player to join UNC’s 2023 class and the fourth player to commit in the past week.

The 6-foot-3, 310-pound Grigsby is a Kennesaw, Georgia native that plays at North Cobb High School and had a total of 30 offers in his recruitment. He took official visits to UNC, Vanderbilt, and N.C. State in his recruitment, picking the Tar Heels out of the trio.

Grigsby is ranked No. 599 overall, the No. 43 interior offensive lineman, and No. 55 player in the state of Georgia per the 247Sports recruiting rankings.

With the commitment of Grigsby and Harvey today, UNC’s class has climbed into the top 40. They are also awaiting the decision of four-star wide receiver Christian Hamilton who is set to announce later on Friday.
