UFC on ESPN 9 results: Katlyn Chookagian dominates Antonina Shevchenko in lopsided decision

Katlyn Chookagian bounces back from title fight defeat in February.

[autotag]Katlyn Chookagian[/autotag] put on the best performance of her UFC career Saturday night.

The former UFC flyweight title challenger defeated [autotag]Antonina Shevchenko[/autotag] in a lopsided decision that read 30-25 on all three judges’ scorecards.

The women’s flyweight bout closed out the UFC on ESPN 9 preliminary card at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas. It aired on ESPN and streamed on ESPN+.

Chookagian (14-3 MMA, 7-3 UFC), who’s known for her rangy striking, put on a grappling clinic against Shevchenko (8-2 MMA, 2-2 UFC). She dominated the action from start to finish, especially in the first 10 minutes of the fight.

[lawrence-related id=522983,522987,523117]

In the first round, Chookagian didn’t wait long to take the fight to the canvas. Seconds into the fight, Chookagian caught a kick from Shevchenko and took her down. From there, Chookagian remained on top for almost the entire round, threatening with submissions and landing heavy shots.

The second round was no different. Chookagian pressed Shevchenko against the cage, got double under-hooks and brought the fight down to the mat, where she once again controlled and attacked Shevchenko from all angles.

The final round was a bit closer, but Chookagian still managed to be the dominant force. After fairly even exchanges on the feet for the majority of the round, Chookagian dragged things back to the canvas and finished the fight on top.

With the win, Chookagian bounced back from a loss to the champion Valentina Shevchenko, Antonina’s sister, at UFC 247 in February. Chookagian is 3-1 in her past four outings.

Brandon Royval not happy with performance, but his UFC debut submission win might say otherwise

Brandon Royval knows what it’s like to win an MMA title – he won the flyweight title for LFA before he came to the UFC.

[autotag]Brandon Royval[/autotag] knows what it’s like to win an MMA title – he won the flyweight title for LFA before he came to the UFC.

If he keeps finishing people the way he did in his UFC debut Saturday, he might have taken the first step toward getting to title contention at the highest level.

Royval (11-4 MMA, 1-0 UFC) submitted longtime UFC fighter Tim Elliott (15-11-1 MMA, 4-9 UFC) with an arm-triangle choke in their flyweight fight on the prelims at UFC on ESPN 9 at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas. Royval was a slight underdog in the fight and got the stoppage at the 3:18 mark of the middle round.

Afterward, Royval told UFC commentator Daniel Cormier that he wasn’t happy with his performance, particularly because Elliott landed four takedowns on him in a little more than eight minutes of fight time. Elliott also outstruck him.

But as you can see in the video below, the stats don’t matter all that much when Royval can pull off that kind of finish.

Casey Kenney scored his first submission win in the UFC.

[autotag]Casey Kenney[/autotag] picked up his first submission win in the UFC.

The bantamweight fighter submitted veteran Louis Smolka on the preliminary card of UFC on ESPN 9, which took place at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas and streamed on ESPN+.

Kenney (15-3-1 MMA, 3-1 UFC) wobbled Smolka early in the first round and then sunk in a one-arm guillotine choke to finish the bout. The official stoppage came at the 3:03 mark of Round 1.

[lawrence-related id=522983,522987,523047]

Video: Chris Gutierrez demolishes Vince Morales with leg kicks at UFC on ESPN 9

Chris Gutierrez scored the 10th stoppage by leg kicks in UFC history.

[autotag]Chris Gutierrez[/autotag] joined the UFC history books on Saturday night.

The featherweight fighter stopped Vince Morales with leg kicks in the opening fight at UFC on ESPN 9, which took place at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas. Gutierrez’s win was the 10th stoppage by leg kicks in UFC history.

[lawrence-related id=522983,522987,522520]

Gutierrez (15-3-1 MMA, 3-1 UFC) pressed Morales early, walking him down the cage while landing many kicks, most of which targeted Morales’ left leg. The accumulation of the leg kicks made it hard for Morales to stand. After falling several times due to the kicks, referee Jason Herzog shut things down in the second round.

Below are highlights of Gutierrez leg kick clinic at UFC on ESPN 9:
