UFC on ESPN 8 results: Dan Ige extends streak in Edson Barboza’s featherweight debut

Dan Ige played spoiler to Edson Barboza’s featherweight debut when he picked up the biggest win of his career at UFC on ESPN 8.

[autotag]Dan Ige[/autotag] played spoiler to [autotag]Edson Barboza[/autotag]’s featherweight debut on Saturday when he picked up the biggest win of his career at UFC on ESPN 8.

Ige (14-2 MMA, 6-1 UFC) extended his winning streak to six consecutive fights, but none is more significant than the split decision over Barboza (20-9 MMA, 14-9 UFC), who fought many of the best at lightweight before moving down a weight class.

He had overcome some hard shots and a cut under the eye, but Ige’s pressure seemed to convince the judges and earn him the nod by scores of 28-29, 29-28 and 29-28.

The featherweight bout was part of the UFC on ESPN 8 main card at VyStar Veterans Memorial Arena in Jacksonville, Fla. It aired on ESPN and streamed on ESPN+.

Ige came out the gate strong and applied heavy pressure on Barboza, landing some solid punches. His aggression took him right into a powerful right hook, though, and led to a knockdown. Barboza jumped on top and pounded away with some strikes from inside the guard, but he didn’t finish and Ige recovered and stood back up. They settled into a groove after that, with Ige getting himself back in with some good head and body work. Barboza landed a pair of leg kicks, but it didn’t deter Ige from pressuring forward and trying to answer every attack with his own, despite a cut under his right eye.

In need of a response to start the second, Ige came out strong, tagging Barboza with his hands as he applied footwork pressure. Barboza stayed composed and chipped away with his own attacks, landing kicks an counter punches while Ige came at him with a lot of volume. Ige tried for a takedown with less than two minutes remaining, but Barboza easily sprawled and stood up. The Brazilian sported a hematoma under his left eye and a cut on the bridge of his nose, but closed the round strong with a pinpoint kick to the body and another defended takedown that turned into ground-and-pound.

With Ige in need of a big moment to sway the judges going into the final round, he came out swinging at Barboza. He connected with a few solid shots, but Barboza remained steady and navigated the push from his opponent. Ige had a huge moment with just over a minute left, securing a takedown on Barboza and keeping control until the final bell. Ige couldn’t inflict much damage, though, and Barboza hung on until the final bell.

It was a very close fight, but the judges rewarded Ige’s work in the final two rounds and got the him the win. Afterward, he called out the top names at 145 pounds such as Yair Rodriguez an Calvin Kattar.

“I did my best to grind and push as hard as I can through that third round,” Ige said. “Edson is a tough guy – one of the best in the world. (It’s) such an honor to share the octagon with him.”

[autotag]Krzysztof Jotko[/autotag] picked up his first win of 2020.

The Polish striker outpointed [autotag]Eryk Anders[/autotag] at Saturday’s UFC on ESPN 8. Jotko (22-4 MMA, 9-4 UFC) notched a 30-27, 29-28, 29-28 decision on the judges’ scorecards.

The middleweight bout was part of the UFC on ESPN 8 main card at VyStar Veterans Memorial Arena in Jacksonville, Fla. It aired on ESPN and streamed on ESPN+.

[lawrence-related id=519715,519718,519926]

It was a fairly uneventful contest between the two middleweights. Anders (13-5 MMA, 5-5 UFC) pushed the action for the majority of the 15 minutes, pressing Jotko against the cage and controlling the clinch.

But despite being the aggressor in the wrestling department, Anders failed to get Jotko to the ground or land many significant strikes.

In Round 1, Anders pressed forward and controlled Jotko against the cage. But at every break, it was clear that Jotko was landing the cleaner shots.  The same story unfolded in Rounds 2 and 3.

With the result, Jotko is now on a three-fight winning streak. It was Jotko’s first fight since July 2019. He mentioned in his post-fight interview wanting to be more active moving forward. Anders’ two-fight streak came to a halt.

UFC on ESPN 8 results: Song Yadong snaps Marlon Vera’s streak in close decision

Song Yadong further elevated his status as one of the top prospects in the sport when he snapped Marlon Vera’s win streak at UFC on ESPN 8.

[autotag]Song Yadong[/autotag] further elevated his status as one of the top prospects in the sport when he snapped [autotag]Marlon Vera[/autotag]’s win streak at UFC on ESPN 8.

The 22-year-old Yadong (16-4-1 MMA, 5-0-1 UFC) remained unbeaten through his octagon tenure by beating his most difficult to challenge to date with a unanimous decision victory over Vera (17-6-1 MMA, 9-5 UFC) after a gritty affair.

Yadong picked up 29-28 scorecards across the board, landing many powerful strikes over the 15 minutes and overcoming a late push from Vera.

The featherweight bout opened up the UFC on ESPN 8 main card at VyStar Veterans Memorial Arena in Jacksonville, Fla. It aired on ESPN and streamed on ESPN+.

The opening minutes of the first round were a feeling-out process, but not a tentative one. Both men exchanged punches and kicks while looking to find an effective range. Yadong landed well in his flurries, while Vera connected with a number of leg kicks. In the latter stages of the frame, the pair tied up and battled from clinch position against the fence.

Vera came out more aggressive to start the second. He continued to pile on leg kicks, and was also able to back Yadong up with his combination in the first few minutes. Yadong had a response, though, landing powerful hooks and counters on Vera. The rest of the round was closely contested as both men swung with bad intentions inside the pocket. Vera had the high point, however, blasting Yadong with a vicious knee. If there was a crowd, the exchanges would’ve certainly sent the fans into frenzy.

Vera opened the final round by charging Yadong with a knee, but instead he was tied up and pushed against the fence. Vera got a reversal and took the fight to the ground for the first time, but couldn’t keep control for long enough to rack up significant points. Yadong landed well the fight was up, but Vera scored a pair of takedowns in the final minute to close the fight out strong.

It went down to the wire, but ultimately Yadong got the win. Vera was frustrated by the decision, refusing to shake hands after the result was announced.

Video: Kevin Holland spoils chance to talk trash with quick UFC on ESPN 8 finish

Kevin Holland wasted no time putting away Anthony Hernandez at UFC on ESPN 8.

[vertical-gallery id=520087]

There was an added level of anticipation around [autotag]Kevin Holland[/autotag]’s fight at UFC on ESPN 8 because, due to the lack of an audience, it would offer the chance to hear his famous trash talk a little more clearly.

That wasn’t the case at all, though. Holland (16-5 MMA, 4-2 UFC) ended his middleweight fight with Anthony Hernandez (8-2 MMA, 1-2 UFC) in lightning-quick fashion, finishing the fight with a flurry of strikes for a 39-second knockout at VyStar Veterans Memorial Arena in Jacksonville, Fla.

It was the second fastest win of Holland’s career after a 22-second submission in 2015, but this one came on a far greater stage.

Watch it below (via Twitter):

Although Holland didn’t have much opportunity to talk inside the octagon, he had plenty to say afterward. He told UFC commentator Paul Felder that he decided to stop Hernandez right away because he looked cageside and realized Daniel Cormier wasn’t part of the booth for the event.

“I noticed ‘DC, wasn’t here, so I wasn’t going to have the wrestling advice,” Holland said. “So I figure I would get him out of here quickly.”

Holland went on to call out Mickey Gall for an upcoming card in June.
