Raphael Assuncao’s manager says he’ll wait for Cody Garbrandt after UFC on ESPN 8 withdrawal

Raphael Assuncao won’t remain on UFC on ESPN 8 after opponent Cody Garbrandt withdrew due to injury.

[autotag]Raphael Assuncao[/autotag] won’t be fighting at UFC on ESPN 8.

On Friday, Daniel Rubenstein of Ruby Sports & Entertainment, who manages Assuncao (27-7 MMA, 11-4 UFC), announced that his client will wait for originally scheduled opponent Cody Garbrandt to heal up.

This comes after news broke that former UFC bantamweight champion Garbrandt was forced to withdraw from a scheduled clash against Assuncao due to kidney issues. After the news came to light, Garbrandt (11-3 MMA, 6-3 UFC) posted a gruesome image of bloody urine on social media. The image has since been removed.

“Rapha’s gonna wait for Cody to heal up,” Rubenstein wrote in a response tweet on Twitter. As for Assuncao’s return? “Hopefully May,” Rubenstein wrote.

UFC on ESPN 8 originally was scheduled to take place in Columbus, Ohio. However, due to the recent coronavirus outbreak, the event will now take place at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas. As originally planned, the event will still take place March 28 and will air on ESPN.

UFC implements athlete guidelines for combatting coronavirus

With the UFC committed to its schedule, the promotion has implemented guidelines to help keep athletes safe during the coronavirus outbreak.

With the UFC currently committed to its live event schedule, the promotion has implemented a series of guidelines designed to help keep athletes safe during the ongoing coronavirus outbreak.

The promotion’s best practice recommendations and requirements were distributed Thursday to all athletes on the UFC roster, just prior to UFC president Dana White formally announcing the company’s fight schedule would remain intact, albeit with a few adjustments to locations and the potential to hold events behind closed doors.

The following is the introduction to the document, which was obtained by MMA Junkie:

Dear Athletes:

UFC is closely monitoring the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) situation, including consulting with UFC’s medical department and our chief medical consultant, Dr. Jeff Davidson, and with government authorities and other professionals. We have prepared the below summary of COVID-10 and UFC guidelines for you.

The UFC guidelines will take effect immediately and continue indefinitely until otherwise notified. As the situation evolves, we will provide you with further notifications and updates.

The COVID-19 athlete guidelines include a list of best practices provided by the World Health Organization, such as the need to “regularly and thoroughly clean your hands with an alcohol-based hand rub or wash them with soap and water,” a recommendation to “maintain at least 3 feet distance from anyone who is coughing and sneezing,” as well as to “avoid touching eyes, nose and mouth.”

However, the guidelines also go on to instruct more active measures of prevention, which promotion officials state are effective immediately for “all UFC athletes and their coaches, cornermen, managers and guests” and include the need to immediately notify both a physician and UFC personnel if “you are exhibiting any symptoms or have been in contact with anyone exhibiting any symptoms of COVID-19.”

The full guidelines are included below, with only personal contact information redacted.

As MMA Junkie previously reported, Saturday’s UFC on ESPN+ 28 event is being contested behind closed doors at Ginasio Nilson Nelson in Brasilia, Brazil, with only production crew and operational staff allowed in the building. Veteran manager Alex Davis, who is currently in Brasilia and represents three athletes competing at the event, said the promotion is taking extra precautions at the host hotel, minimizing the fighters’ potential exposure to the public and keeping with the growing notion of “social distancing.”

He also said his athletes enter Saturday’s competition without any hesitation.

“None of my fighters ever considered dropping out of the fight, and I don’t know of any other fighters who considered it, either,” Davis told MMA Junkie. “The UFC has cordoned off the hotel. They’re not letting the general public inside or into the venue on Saturday. They’re doing everything they can to keep us all safe.”

UFC officials told MMA Junkie that any fighter who feels uncomfortable competing at any upcoming event due to coronavirus concerns could withdraw from the fight cards without any repercussions from the promotion. However, they have not encountered any such requests at this point.

In the meantime, White remains committed to keeping the promotion moving forward when virtually every other sport on the planet has shut down, at least temporarily. While he admits further changes could be necessary, White believes the promotion can operate safely during the continued crisis.

“We’ve been closely monitoring the situation with the coronavirus and its potential impact on the health and safety of UFC athletes, staff and fans around the world,” White said in a video statement released to MMA Junkie. “We’re moving forward with all our UFC live events, but we’re going to adapt to these unprecedented circumstances.

“This is a very tough situation that is constantly evolving, so we will keep you updated as best we can. We greatly appreciate your understanding and your continued support.”

Cody Garbrandt out of UFC on ESPN 8 vs. Rapahel Assuncao due to kidney issues

Cody Garbrandt has been forced out of his fight vs. Raphael Assuncao at UFC on ESPN 8 due to kidney issues that have left him hospitalized.

UFC Columbus has taken a major hit.

Ohio’s own [autotag]Cody Garbrandt[/autotag] has been forced out of his co-main event fight vs. [autotag]Raphael Assuncao[/autotag] at UFC on ESPN 8 due to kidney issues that have left him hospitalized.

UFC on ESPN 8 takes place March 28 at Nationwide Arena in Columbus, Ohio. The card airs on ESPN following early prelims on ESPN+/UFC Fight Pass.

In a statement provided to ESPN, Garbrandt (11-3 MMA, 6-3 UFC) said he was suffering flu-like symptoms that resulted in him urinating blood.

“I honestly don’t know what it is,” Garbrandt said. “A month ago, I had cellulitis in my shin. I went to the hospital and got that cleared with antibiotics. I got back into training, but then last Friday, the lymph nodes in my groin were inflamed and I didn’t feel well. I thought it was just due to rough training.

“On Saturday, I had flu-like symptoms. The lymph nodes were so inflamed I couldn’t walk. I took an Uber to the hospital and did a bunch of tests on my blood, kidneys, CAT scan. The doctor sent me home, and 20 minutes later I felt even worse and started pissing blood.”

It’s been over a year since Garbrandt last competed, when he suffered a first-round knockout loss to Pedro Munhoz at UFC 235. Since capturing the UFC bantamweight title in a masterclass performance against Dominick Cruz in 2016, Garbrandt has lost his last three in a row.

Garbrandt said that doctors haven’t been able to diagnose exactly what the problem is thus far but that he wants to focus on his health in hopes of making a quick turnaround.

Coronavirus: UFC faces Columbus decision with Ohio set to issue public gathering ban

The UFC will soon face a decision on UFC on ESPN 8 in Columbus with Ohio’s governor set to ban large gatherings.

Coronavirus is now affecting major sporting events in the United States and it is highly likely to include the March 28 UFC event in Columbus, Ohio.

On Wednesday afternoon, Ohio governor Mike DeWine announced his state will become more aggressive in response to the pandemic after a fourth case of the coronavirus was reported in the state.

As part of Ohio’s measures to deal the outbreak, the state will soon issue an order banning all large gatherings. The order is set to be in place within the next two days.

“In the next several days we will sign an order on mass gatherings in the state of Ohio,” DeWine told reporters. “Let me reiterate what the experts have told us, that there is a risk in any kind of mass gathering. The bigger the gathering, the bigger the risk. The closer you are to people the bigger the risk.”

Sports leagues across the country from the NBA to the NHL are wrestling with how to handle their response to the virus.

The NCAA has been the most proactive among sports authorities, as it announced Wednesday the entirety of the men’s and women’s collegiate basketball tournaments will proceed behind closed doors.

The UFC has yet to issue an official statement on the state of UFC on ESPN 8 in Columbus. MMA Junkie reached out to the UFC for comment on Wednesday, who responded they are looking into the situation.

It’s unknown how the governor’s order will ultimately affect UFC on ESPN 8. This could range from hosting the event at the arena without fans, to changing location, to cancelling the card.

The event is set take place Saturday, March 28 at Nationwide Arena. The card will air on ESPN. The main event features a heavyweight bout between Francis Ngannou and Jairzinho Rozenstruik.

Coronavirus concerns: UFC’s Columbus show unchanged for now, says Ohio Athletic Commission

As coronavirus looms, Ohio’s athletic commission says it will follow whatever guidelines the governor’s office issues about the upcoming UFC on ESPN 8.

The UFC’s upcoming card in Columbus, Ohio could be the next major sporting event to be affected by nationwide concerns over the coronavirus outbreak.

On Tuesday, Ohio governor Mike DeWine recommended no spectators be allowed to attend indoor sports events – college, high school, or professional.

However, there have been no specific guidelines yet laid out. And with UFC on ESPN 8 set to take place in Ohio’s capital city, that leaves open the question as to whether the event will proceed as scheduled.

In a statement to MMA Junkie on Tuesday, Ohio Athletic Commission executive director Bernie Profato issued the following statement to MMA Junkie:

“Any issues will go through the Governor’s office and will be enforced by the Athletic Commission. We have not (sat) down with the UFC to discuss any alternatives yet.”

The UFC has not commented on the developing situation as of this writing.

Friday, UFC president Dana White spoke on coronavirus concerns at the UFC 249 on-sale press conference. While he said the organization is monitoring the situation, he also told TSN in a later interview, “I don’t give a (expletive) about the coronavirus.”

The UFC’s next five cards take place in Sao Paulo, Brazil, London, Columbus, Portland, Ore., and Lincoln, Neb. As of now, all UFC events will continue as scheduled.

However, other organizations such as ONE Championship, KSW, ARES, and Rise FC have all cancelled upcoming fights due to the outbreak.
