With three straight wins, Charles Johnson wants spot in flyweight rankings after Joshua Van KO at UFC Denver

Charles Johnson wants a big step-up following his impressive KO at UFC Denver.

[autotag]Charles Johnson[/autotag] wants to be among the world’s best.

Now on a three-fight winning streak, Johnson (16-6 MMA, 5-4 UFC) is hoping he’s done enough to earn a spot in the UFC’s official flyweight rankings, which would open up the doors for bigger fights.

“Hopefully, I should be ranked,” Johnson told reporters (FanSided MMA) following his win at UFC on ESPN 59. “That’s three wins in a row. (No.) 14- and 15-(ranked) haven’t done nothing in this promotion for three fights in three years.

“… Let’s get some guys that been working and fighting everyone like myself, like (Allan) Nascimento vs. (Jafel Filho) – they’re fighting. I think one of them will earn a spot, too. I think guys are earning their way up.”

Johnson knocked out highly touted prospect Joshua Van at Saturday’s UFC on ESPN 59 in Denver. It was a fight many expected him to lose, given the promise Van had show in previous outings.

Johnson knew he had it in him to get past Van, as he’s the present of the division – which is why he took the fight.

“I knew that Van had a couple of fights fall out on him, and he had been training,” Johnson said. “I knew that he was prepared to fight anyone, and I’m always ready, and I wanted to fight. If I wasn’t going to get a ranked opponent next, which it was what I was told, then why not fight the kid on a three-fight winning streak with a finish who’s being projected to be in the rankings soon? Why not fight him? It’s a fan-friendly fight. Everybody is going to love the fight, and I could show people that Charles Johnson is different.

“Van has a healthy future in this promotion, but he’s not there yet. Charles is. It’s time.”

Mick Maynard’s Shoes: What’s next for Rose Namajunas after UFC on ESPN 59 win?

Rose Namajunas is now 2-1 since changing divisions after UFC on ESPN 59 and hasn’t been shy that she wants a shot at gold sooner than later.

(ALSO SEE: Mick Maynard’s Shoes: What’s next for Tracy Cortez after UFC on ESPN 59 loss?)

[autotag]Rose Namajunas[/autotag] took all the risk at UFC on ESPN 59 in accepting replacement opponent Tracy Cortez, and in the end the she held serve.

Namajunas (13-6 MMA, 11-5 UFC) proved she’s absolutely in the upper tier of the women’s flyweight division with a clear-cut unanimous decision win over Cortez (11-2 MMA, 5-1 UFC) at Ball Arena in Denver, and “Thug” Rose now is 2-1 since she moved up to her new division from strawweight, where she was a UFC champion twice over.

[lawrence-related id=2755634,2755250,2755618]

The 125-pound division is a bit stuck in the mud as the title picture gets sorted, however, meaning Namajunas likely has to sit idle until something logical materializes.

What will that be, though? Watch the video above for thoughts and analysis on Namajunas’ future after UFC on ESPN 59.

Jean Silva honored to have fought and defeated Drew Dober at UFC Denver: ‘I’m such a huge fan of his’

Jean Silva reflects on his TKO win over Drew Dober at Saturday’s UFC Denver.

[autotag]Jean Silva[/autotag] is over the moon with his latest win in the octagon.

Saturday on the main card of UFC on ESPN 59, Silva (14-2 MMA, 3-0 UFC) continued his path of destruction in the UFC, this time a weight class above and against the toughest opponent he’s yet to face in his career – Drew Dober.

“It’s like I’ve been saying all week, I’m such a huge fan of his,” Silva told FanSided MMA. “Look at what he’s done. Look at the things he’s accomplished and has been able to build in his life, all with his work. Look at the beautiful family he has and the house he has. This crowd and this arena, look at the way they were screaming.

“So to share this stage with him, I’m very proud, and the Lord is very proud to have been in there with him.”

Silva won by TKO due to doctor’s stoppage, as he badly cut Dober (27-14 MMA, 13-10 UFC) on his right eyebrow. It was a bout that although it was going in Silva’s favor, there was plenty of damage dished both ways for over 10 minutes.

The Brazilian is definitely feeling the ware and is hesitant on fighting again at 155 pounds, as opposed to his natural division of 145.

“I’m going to have to sit with the Lord and have a tough conversation about this,” Silva said. “We’ve been knocking everybody out in the first round and all of a sudden, what the hell? What’s up with doing more rounds. It took such a long time.

“But anyway, that’s exactly what we anticipated. I said bye to my entire family and friends. I said before this fight, ‘Nope, if I don’t come out with the win, I’ll die in there.”

Tracy Cortez fueled by Rose Namajunas loss at UFC Denver: ‘I want to get right back in there’

Tracy Cortez reacts to her unanimous decision loss to Rose Namajunas at Saturday’s UFC on ESPN 59.

The UFC women’s flyweight wants to get right back on the horse following her first defeat in the UFC’s octagon. Cortez (11-2 MMA, 5-1 UFC) lost a unanimous decision to Rose Namajunas (14-6 MMA, 11-5 UFC) in the main event of Saturday’s UFC on ESPN 59 in Denver.

Cortez vows to come back stronger, and she hopes to do that sooner rather than later.

“I want to get right back in there,” Cortez told ESPN. “Last time I (lost), I went on a killer streak and improved myself again. I’m not here to prove the world, I’m here to prove myself.”

Cortez wasn’t originally supposed to fight Namajunas on Saturday. She filled in on late notice for an injured Maycee Barber. The Mexican-American wishes she would’ve fought Namajunas under better circumstances, but still takes a lot from the experience.

“I took it on two weeks’ notice, unprepared, and gave it all I had,” Cortez said. “I know if I were to have a full camp, prepared – I mean, my cardio was there – I think I would’ve done a lot better with a good game plan. I think I proved myself I can go five fives, you know. (I’m) looking forward to the next one.”

Rose Namajunas ‘forward-thinking’ toward title shot after UFC on ESPN 59 main event win

Rose Namajunas thinks she “100 percent” moved closer to a title shot after her UFC Denver main event win over Tracy Cortez.

Mission accomplished for [autotag]Rose Namajunas[/autotag].

The former UFC strawweight champion felt she got the job done on all fronts in her main event bout at Saturday’s UFC on ESPN 59 in Denver.

Namajunas (14-6 MMA, 11-5 UFC) defeated Tracy Cortez by unanimous decision to improve to 2-1 since moving up to the women’s flyweight division in September.

“Absolutely, I’m happy with it,” Namajunas said about her performance at the UFC on ESPN 59 post-fight press conference. “I’m happy with: One, having little injury. Two, being able to win. And three, I felt it was a pretty exciting fight.

“I wanted a finish, of course. It’s been a while since I’ve finished somebody, since like what, 2020, 2021? So of course I want to finish, but it felt I got pretty close. In the first, I dropped her. Overall, I’m very happy.”

Namajunas, 32, said she felt her performance against Cortez (11-2 MMA, 5-1 UFC) showed she’s finally settling in at 125 pounds. She lost her divisional debut to top contender Manon Fiorot, but has since bounced back with consecutive victories over Amanda Ribas and Cortez.

[lawrence-related id=2755250,2755618]

“It’s just taken a while for me with all the stuff we had worked on, you know, it’s just building blocks, and I had to build my momentum to get to this point,” Namajunas said. “Now my shoulders feel really good. My right one still aches sometimes. I’ve just got to let it fully heal. I think it’s just going to keep getting better and there’s a lot to improve on, still.”

As Namajunas looks forward, she continues toward her goal of joining Amanda Nunes as the only females in UFC history to claim titles in two weight classes.

Whether it’s a rebooking against Maycee Barber, who she was originally scheduled to fight on the card, or a matchup with someone else, Namajunas just wants to find a way to strike gold.

“100 percent (I think I moved closed to a title shot),” Namajunas said. “All that matters is winning, right? So, here we go.

“When (Barber) feels better maybe we can talk about it, but ultimately I’m just forward-thinking right now.”
