Video: Brian Ortega, ‘Korean Zombie’ face off ahead of UFC on ESPN+ 38

Brian Ortega and Chan Sung Jung had their first fight week encounter ahead of UFC on ESPN+ 38.

ABU DHABI – [autotag]Brian Ortega[/autotag] and [autotag]Chan Sung Jung[/autotag] had their first fight week encounter Thursday ahead of UFC on ESPN+ 38.

Ortega (14-1 MMA, 6-1 UFC) and Jung (16-5 MMA, 6-2 UFC), who meet in Saturday’s featherweight headliner, got together for a staredown on the beach of “Fight Island” to help build further anticipation for their grudge match.

Given the history between Ortega and “The Korean Zombie,” who were originally booked to fight back in December, the faceoff remained civil. Both men brought the intensity but were able to keep professional as UFC president Dana White stood between them.

Dana White: Brian Ortega vs. Chan Sung Jung is ‘absolutely the No. 1 contender fight’

The stakes just got higher for the UFC on ESPN+ 38 headliner.

If UFC president Dana White is serious, featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski’s next challenger will be decided this weekend.

On Wednesday, White labeled Chan Sung Jung vs. Brian Ortega as a title eliminator bout for the 145-pound division. The two are set to fight this Saturday in the main event of UFC on ESPN+38 in Yas Island, Abu Dhabi.

“It’s absolutely the No. 1 contender fight,” White told ESPN. “First of all, it’s the fight that should’ve happened a long time ago. We’re finally here, with all the crazy stuff that’s happened and all the crazy things that always happen in this business. For us to finally be here, the ‘Zombie’ vs. Ortega, absolutely the winner of this fight should get the next title shot.”

Earlier Wednesday, Jung’s coach and translator, Eddie Cha, said they’d heard the same thing and hoped White would keep his word.

Both Ortega (No. 2) and Jung (No. 4) are ranked in the top five of the UFC’s official rankings.

Jung (16-5 MMA, 6-2 UFC) is currently on a two-fight winning streak since bouncing back from a loss to Yair Rodriguez in late 2018. Both wins were TKOs that earned him “Performance of the Night” bonuses.

Meanwhile, Ortega (14-1 MMA, 6-1 UFC)  is coming off an almost two-year layoff. He last fought in December 2018 where he suffered his first loss to then champion Max Holloway in a lopsided title fight.

Volkanovski has been waiting for a challenger since July after his first successful title defense in a rematch against Holloway.

Brian Ortega never considered a tuneup for UFC return: ‘I don’t need rebuilding’

UFC featherweight Brian Ortega won’t make any excuses, win or lose, against “The Korean Zombie” at UFC on ESPN+ 38.

ABU DHABI – [autotag]Brian Ortega[/autotag] is picking up right where he left off.

The former UFC title challenger takes on top contender Chan Sung Jung this Saturday in the main event of UFC on ESPN+ 38. The bout marks Ortega’s (14-1 MMA, 6-1 UFC) first fight back since losing to then champion Max Holloway in a wild brawl in December 2018.

Injuries and the coronavirus pandemic have kept Ortega out of action for almost two years. Many hoped the 29-year-old would ease his way back into competition for his return and not fight the top of the division right away.

“T-City” understands the sentiment but said he doesn’t need a tuneup.

“This was all about coming back, taking a fight that’s not easy, because when something like this happens it’s like, ‘Oh, lets rebuild him again or do something.'” Ortega told reporters, including MMA Junkie, in a pre-fight media scrum Wednesday. “And I was like, I don’t need rebuilding in the fight world. I need rebuilding in the training world, and I got my rebuilding in the training in the world.

“I’m in this sport to fight the best; that’s why I love this (explicit). Let’s test your world against mine. Let’s test your chess pieces against mine. Let’s go to war. Ultimately the fans win. Everyone wins. Fighters can tell you: We love fighting, we love testing our will, and we get paid for it. So this is beautiful.”

[lawrence-related id=559064,559110,559067]

Ortega said he’s improved his striking for his return and is excited to get back in the cage. And although Ortega has added new tools to his arsenal, he expects anything and everything from the “Korean Zombie” and won’t shy away from another war like fans witnessed in his last outing against Holloway.

“I will take whatever I can get,” Ortega explained. “If I get a quick knockout or a quick submission, the name of the game is win. Obviously, you can tell I’m emotional, so it might go to a war. I might piss my team off, but (explicit) it.”

Chan Sung Jung expects Brian Ortega’s ‘unbelievable chin’ to hold up at UFC on ESPN+ 38

Chan Sung Jung is giving Brian Ortega his full credit going into UFC on ESPN+ 38.

ABU DHABI – [autotag]Chan Sung Jung[/autotag] is giving [autotag]Brian Ortega[/autotag] his full credit going into UFC on ESPN+ 38.

Jung (16-5 MMA, 6-2 UFC), also known as “The Korean Zombie,” is looking to solidify a title shot against Ortega (14-1 MMA, 6-1 UFC) in Saturday’s featherweight headliner, which takes place at Flash Forum at Yas Island in Abu Dhabi and streams on ESPN+.

The most emphatic way to make that happen would be with a highlight-reel finish. That’s usually the manner in which he wins his fights, but Jung is tapering expectations for this one. He’s seen the type of damage Ortega has absorbed and overcome in previous bouts, so Jung said it’s critical to remain measured for all five rounds.

“Ortega’s a tough guy to knock out,” Jung told reporters, including MMA Junkie, though an interpreter at Wednesday’s UFC on ESPN+ 38 media day. “He’s got an unbelievable chin and he’s never been knocked out or knocked down. He got hit about 300 times by (Max) Holloway and still didn’t get dropped. He’s going to be a tough guy to knock out. He’s going to go five rounds and at the end of the day I want to just get that ‘W.'”

[lawrence-related id=558613,555717]

There’s been a lot of history between Jung and Ortega leading into the fight. They were originally booked to fight in December’s UFC on ESPN+ 23 headliner, but Ortega suffered a knee injury that forced him to withdraw. The pair subsequently crossed paths while attending UFC 248 in March, with Ortega slapping Jung’s friend and translator, Korean pop star Jay Park, in a highly publicized incident.

The disdain has grown between the two sides since that altercation in Las Vegas, but Jung said he’s tried to make peace ahead of fight night. He still holds Ortega’s actions against him, but said it’s important to enter the fight calm and composed.

“As an individual, we’re not on the best terms. But as Brian Ortega the fighter, I respect him to the utmost,” Jung said. “I’ve been a fan of him. All his fights, I’ve watched, and I’m actually amazed by some of the things he’s been able to accomplish. I’m expecting Brian Ortega the fighter.”

Ortega hasn’t competed since his title-fight loss to Max Holloway at UFC 231 in December 2018. He finally makes his return, and “T-City” claims he’s a new version of himself after making adjustments to his team and training regiment.

Jung said he doesn’t fully know what to expect Saturday, but he’ll be ready to win and lock up the next shot at reigning 145-pound champion Alexander Volkanovski.

“If I win, I’m going to get the title shot,” Jung said. “We can only go off the film we’ve seen of him, and eventually, when the fight starts to open up, he is who he is and he’s going to come out the way he is. He can only trust what he’s prepared to do and what he’s planned to do. So we’re kind of expecting a different type of Ortega, but we can only guess. No one will really know how he’s going to come out.”
