AUSTIN, Texas – All the pre-fight activities are in the books for UFC on ESPN 37 following Friday’s ceremonial weigh-ins and faceoffs.

In the main event, top featherweights looking to make their case for a shot at the title clash as [autotag]Calvin Kattar[/autotag] (23-5 MMA, 7-3 UFC) meets [autotag]Josh Emmett[/autotag] (17-2 MMA, 8-2 UFC).

The two fighters were separated by UFC president Dana White and UFC security, which took a while as the two fighters refused to back down.

Kelley is still under fire weeks after he called Brazilian fighter Viviane Araujo a “dirty Brazilian,” while he cornered his girlfriend Andrea Lee at a May event.

UFC on ESPN 37 takes place Saturday at the Moody Center. The main card airs on ESPN/ESPN+ following prelims on ESPN2/ESPN+.

The UFC returns to Texas this week with a potential featherweight barnburner at the top of the bill.

UFC on ESPN 37 takes place Saturday at Moody Center in Austin, Texas. The card airs on ESPN and streams on ESPN+.

(Click here to open a PDF of the staff picks grid in a separate window.)

In the main event, Calvin Kattar (23-5 MMA, 7-3 UFC) takes on Josh Emmett (17-2 MMA, 8-2 UFC) at featherweight. Kattar is a -250 favorite at Tipico Sportsbook, and he’s got a sizable 8-3 lead in the picks from our 11 of our editors, writers, radio hosts and videographers.

In the co-feature, Donald Cerrone (36-16 MMA, 23-13 UFC) takes on fellow longtime UFC standout Joe Lauzon (28-15 MMA, 15-12 UFC) at welterweight. Cerrone is a -175 favorite, but it’s Lauzon with a 7-4 picks lead.

Also on the main card, Kevin Holland (22-7 MMA, 9-4 UFC) meets Tim Means (32-12-1 MMA, 14-9 UFC) at welterweight. Holland is the biggest favorite on the main card at -320, but he has the slimmest possible edge in our picks at 6-5.

Joaquin Buckley (14-4 MMA, 4-2 UFC) takes on Albert Duraev (15-3 MMA, 1-0 UFC) in a middleweight bout. Duraev is a -250 favorite, but Buckley, like Lauzon, is bucking the betting trend with our staff members and has a 6-5 picks lead.

Damir Ismagulov (23-1 MMA, 4-0 UFC) is a -175 favorite in his lightweight bout against Guram Kutateladze (12-2 MMA, 1-0 UFC), and he’s got the biggest blowout on the main card from our pickers at 12-1.

And to open the main card, Julian Marquez (9-2 MMA, 3-1 UFC) takes on Gregory Rodrigues (11-4 MMA, 2-1 UFC) at middleweight. Rodrigues is a -180 favorite at the betting window, but Marquez has a 6-5 lead in the picks from our staff members.

In the MMA Junkie reader consensus picks, Kattar (72 percent), Cerrone (57 percent), Holland (81 percent), Buckley (55 percent), Ismagulov (74 percent) and Marquez (63 percent) are the choices.

‘There’s gonna be violence’: Josh Emmett plans to finish Calvin Kattar in UFC on ESPN 37 headliner

Josh Emmett eyes a title shot with a win over Calvin Kattar at UFC on ESPN 37.

AUSTIN, Texas – If fight fans are hoping for a fun show in the main event of UFC on ESPN 37, [autotag]Josh Emmett[/autotag] promises to deliver the goods.

Headlining for the second time in his UFC career, Emmett (17-2 MMA, 8-2 UFC) will meet a fellow featherweight who is no stranger to the main event spotlight, Calvin Kattar. While Emmett knows he’s in for a thought fight against a dangerous opponent in Kattar (23-5 MMA, 7-3 UFC), the main event stage won’t add any pressure to perform.

“It’s just another fight,” Emmett told reporters including MMA Junkie at Wednesday’s media day. “I don’t look at it in any other way. I always prepare the same. I’ve been preparing for a five, six-round fight my entire career. So yeah, there could possibly be two more rounds, but it’s no different to me.”

Should he be successful on Saturday, Emmett’s win streak will sit at five, as he enters with consecutive wins over Michael Johnson, Mirsad Bektic, Shane Burgos, and Dan Ige. During that stretch, Emmett took home two bonuses for his work, which speaks to his ability to put on exciting fights for the fans.

“Every fight has the potential to be one of the Fights of the Night, Fight of the Year, if I’m involved in it,” Emmett said. “I feel like every single fight I’ve been in, everyone’s like, ‘This is a banger, this is gonna be fireworks’ – and it will. At the end of the day, I really do not know what’s gonna happen.”

In preparation for this bout, Emmett leaned on a former opponent to help emulate Kattar’s style. He brought in Burgos, the man he shared a Fight of the Night bonus with two years ago. Emmett’s team found Burgos’ frame and athleticism to be a great match to help prepare for a dynamic opponent like Kattar.

“His reach is really long,” Emmett said. “He has a great jab, Kattar has a great jab, great straight punches, and good boxing, so I reached out to him. … I usually use my teammate and friend Andre Fili – great look for a lot of opponents, but he had just fought and things like that. So, we reached out to Burgos and he was down for it.”

While Emmett may not know exactly what will unfold when the cage door locks inside the Moody Center, he does know he will be trying his best to end the show early and keep the judges out of the result. Once the dust settles, he plans to get his hand raised and position himself for a shot at the featherweight title.

“There’s gonna be violence, that’s for sure,” Emmett said. “He’s gonna be trying to take my head off, I’m gonna be doing the same thing with every strike I throw. I’m trying to finish the fight.”

Joaquin Buckley confident former training partner Albert Duraev won’t trade: ‘If I blink too hard, he’s going to shoot’

Joaquin Buckley burst out laughing when he heard what Albert Duraev said.

AUSTIN, Texas – [autotag]Joaquin Buckley[/autotag] and [autotag]Albert Duraev[/autotag] have a little history.

While they’ll be opponents Saturday at UFC on ESPN 37, Buckley (14-4 MMA, 4-2 UFC) and Duraev (15-3 MMA, 1-0 UFC) were once on the same side. Shortly after Duraev revealed at a pre-fight news conference the two trained together in the past, Buckley confirmed their sessions and shed light on how they went.

“They was cool,” Buckley told reporters including MMA Junkie. “He was good at what he was good at. A lot of those positions that he was put in, it was all from training. He didn’t have to work for those positions, like that side-mount and mount, all that. He did good at what he was good at, which is holding people down.

“For this fight, I tell people. Training is different from fighting. When I’m putting 50 percent on, I’m putting 110 on in a fight. He’s going to see the difference.  … He always wanted to take a picture. I think he’s a big fan of mine. In this fight, I’m sure we’re going to have a good time.”

Duraev is known as a grappler, but told reporters Wednesday he will try to stand and trade with Buckley early before he takes it to the ground. That statement cracked Buckley up.

“If I blink too hard, he’s going to shoot, if you understand what I’m saying,” Buckley said. “It doesn’t matter with Albert Duraev. Like I said, there’s only one thing he’s going to try to do. When that’s not successful, I’m just going to be out there having a good time, throwing my hands and kicking my feet.”

UFC on ESPN 37 takes place Saturday at Moody Arena. The main card airs on ESPN after prelims on ESPN+. Check out Buckley’s full pre-fight news conference in the video above.
