UFC on ESPN+ 36: Khamzat Chimaev vs. Gerald Meerschaert odds, picks and best bets

Previewing Saturday’s UFC on ESPN+ 36 fight between Khamzat Chimaev and Geral Meerschaert, with MMA betting odds, picks, tips and bets.

In a middleweight bout, Khamzat Chimaev and Gerald Meerschaert lock horns at UFC on ESPN+ 36 Saturday at the UFC’s APEX Facility in Las Vegas. The prelims kick off at 5 p.m. ET on ESPN+, followed by the main card set for 8 p.m. ET.

Chimaev (8-0) is a punching machine, but he is certainly not a one-trick pony. He made his UFC debut July 15 against John Phillips and he earned the submission win in Round 2 at 1:12. Chimaev took a fight against Rhys McKee for a quick turnaround just 10 days later and recorded a knockout just 3:09 into the bout. All eight of his professional fights have finished inside the distance, including four submissions and four knockouts.

The veteran Meerschaert (31-13) is a heavy underdog, and the southpaw has a decisive disadvantage in significant strikes landed per minute at 8.88 for Chimaev to his 3.31. His opponent is more accurate with the fists, too, as Meerschaert trails 72.81% to 42.98% in significant strike accuracy percentage. “GM3” is coming off a knockout loss in just 74 seconds against Ian Heinisch, and he has dropped four of his past six. Chimaev is about to add to his woes.

Chimaev (-500) is an overwhelming favorite, so you cannot just bet him straight up on the 2-way fight result line. Get a little bit creative instead. Look to the 5-way line, playing CHIMAEV BY KO/TKO, DQ OR SUBMISSION (-189) for method of victory. It’s a little more juice than I’d prefer to lay, but it’s a sound play.

Betting OVER 1.5 ROUNDS (+105) is a good bet, as Meerschaert is a veteran who will be able to hang with Chimaev for a while before finally knuckling under. In addition, I like to suggest playing the fight finish in both ROUND 2 (+250) and ROUND (+600). As long as the fight doesn’t end in Round 1, or, of course, go the distance, you’re a winner in at least one of the ends, and ahead.

UFC on ESPN+ 36: Mackenzie Dern vs. Randa Markos odds, picks and best bets

Previewing Saturday’s UFC on ESPN+ 36 fight between Mackenzie Dern and Randa Markos, with MMA betting odds, picks, tips and bets.

In a women’s strawweight fight, Mackenzie Dern and Randa Markos go toe to toe at UFC on ESPN+ 36 Saturday at the UFC’s APEX Facility in Las Vegas. The prelims kick off at 5 p.m. ET on ESPN+, followed by the main card set for 8 p.m. ET.

Dern (8-1) is coming off a submission win over Hannah Cifers last time out on May 30, winning in just 2:36 of the first round. Three of her four fights at the UFC level have been victories, with two finishing inside the distance. Dern is outstanding on the canvas, with two wins in the past three by way of submission, and five of her nine professional bouts ending via her opponent tapping out.

Markos (10-9-1), a.k.a. the “Quiet Storm”, is coming off a unanimous decision loss against Amanda Ribas on March 14 on the Lee-Oliveira card. She hasn’t lost back-to-back fights since losing the TUF 20 Semifinal and Final against Rose Namajunas and Jessica Penne back on Dec. 10-12, 2014.

DERN (-176) is worth playing straight up on the 2-way line, as she should be able to push past the Canadian. In addition, playing DERN BY KO/TKO, DQ OR SUBMISSION (+120) at plus-money is an outstanding value, too. She is a submission machine, but playing Dern by submission (+138) only on the 7-way line doesn’t save you that much. Why not include the potential knockout, too?

In addition, playing UNDER 2.5 ROUNDS (-112) is a great investment, as this one is a good bet to finish inside the distance.

UFC on ESPN+ 36: Donald Cerrone vs. Niko Price odds, picks and best bets

Previewing Saturday’s UFC on ESPN+ 36 fight between Donald Cerrone and Niko Price, with MMA betting odds, picks, tips and bets.

In a welterweight bout, Donald Cerrone and Niko Price lock horns at UFC on ESPN+ 36 Saturday at the UFC’s APEX Facility in Las Vegas. The prelims kick off at 5 p.m. ET on ESPN+, followed by the main card set for 8 p.m. ET.

The veteran Cerrone (36-15) heads into this one on a four-bout losing skid, the longest of his career. However, “Cowboy” has fallen to Anthony Pettis, Conor McGregor, Justin Gaethje and Tony Ferguson, a who’s who of MMA. There is no shame in losses to each of those men. His loss to Pettis at UFC 249 was a unanimous decision, with his previous three setbacks each KO/TKOs. He does lead 46.29 to 38.27 in significant strike accuracy percentage, and he also holds edges of 1.23 to 1.08 in takedown average and 35.29 to 23.81 in takedown accuracy percentage.

Price (14-4) is coming off a TKO – doctor’s stoppage against Vicente Luque on the UFC 249 card, falling in the third round on May 9. He has alternated wins and losses in each of his past six, and all three of the losses are by way of KO/TKO. His resume isn’t nearly as impressive as Cowboy’s, with his most impressive win in 11 fights at the UFC level a win over James Vick on Oct. 12, 2019. Cerrone is a bit of a wounded animal, but he is still dangerous and the most impressive fighter Price will have seen in his career.

Backing the veteran CERRONE (+125) straight up on the 2-way line is a nice value. Price (-152) is an impressive fighter, but Cowboy isn’t taking a fifth straight loss. While I like Cerrone to win, this one won’t be easy, and it will not be quick. Go OVER 1.5 ROUNDS (-112), although it won’t be much longer than that.

In addition, roll the dice on CERRONE BY KO/TKO, DQ OR SUBMISSION (+260), as you can nearly triple up. And, as I’ve mentioned many times in the past, take the fight to end in ROUND 2 (+310) and ROUND 3 (+550) for a solid value. If the fight ends in either of those rounds you’ll finish well ahead.

If you don’t want to specify a winner, but simply a finish, go with KO/TKO/DQ (-154), and it doesn’t matter who comes away with the knockout, as long as that’s the method of victory by either of the combatants.

UFC on ESPN+ 36: Johnny Walker vs. Ryan Spann odds, picks and best bets

Previewing Saturday’s UFC on ESPN+ 36 fight between Johnny Walker and Ryan Spann with MMA betting odds, picks, tips and bets.

In a light heavyweight bout, Johnny Walker and Ryan Spann tangle at UFC on ESPN+ 36 Saturday at the UFC’s APEX Facility in Las Vegas. The prelims kick off at 5 p.m. ET on ESPN+, followed by the main card set for 8 p.m. ET.

Walker (17-5) steps into the octagon one inch taller than his opponent while possessing a three-inch reach advantage. He also leads Spann (18-5) in significant strikes landed per minute at 4.01 to 3.32, and he is way more accurate at 70.35 to 43.85 in significant strike accuracy percentage. In other words, Walker is dangerous if he can keep this fight upright. However, his confidence might be down a bit with two consecutive losses in his previous two fights, including getting knocked out by Corey Anderson on the UFC 244 card.

Where Spann holds an advantage is in grappling, and he will want to get this fight to the mat as soon as possible. He has a 1.13-to-0.43 takedown average, and 1.88-to-1.29 submission average advantage. Spann, nicknamed “Superman”, picked up a split-decision win over Smilin’ Sam Alvey last time out on the UFC 249 card, but his previous two fights finished inside the distance. Those two wins were a submission over Devin Clark, and a knockout of Rogerio Nogueira, showing his versatility as a fighter.

Johnny Walker vs. Ryan Spann betting odds

Odds via BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated at 8:30 a.m. ET.

SPANN (100) is a slight underdog, but he is a tremendous value against Walker (-125). Spann has proven he is becoming a well-rounded fighter capable of winning in a multitude of ways. And you have to question Walker’s confidence after a pair of setbacks in his past two fights. SPANN BY KO/TKO, DQ OR SUBMISSION (+175) is also worth a small-unit bet.

Take the OVER 1.5 ROUNDS (-112) in this one, however, as each of these fighters will likely take a little time to feel each other out. In addition, take ROUND 2 (+320) and ROUND 3 (+650) for the fight finish. Yes, you will lose one of these wagers, but if the fight ends in either Round 2 or 3 you’re still well ahead.

UFC on ESPN+ 36: Colby Covington vs. Tyron Woodley odds, picks and best bets

Previewing Saturday’s UFC on ESPN+ 36 fight between Colby Covington and Tyron Woodley, with MMA betting odds, picks, tips and bets.

In the welterweight main event, rivals Colby Covington and Tyron Woodley do battle at UFC on ESPN+ 36 Saturday at the UFC’s APEX Facility in Las Vegas. The prelims kick off at 5 p.m. ET on ESPN+, followed by the main card set for 8 p.m. ET.

Covington (15-2) is the overwhelming favorite in this battle of former champs, and he makes no bones about his disdain for Woodley. He is quoted as saying “I’ve always hated the guy,” and Woodley (19-5-1) is on record saying that there would be no handshake with his counterpart. Let the fireworks begin!

Covington, nicknamed “Chaos”, has been chomping at the bit to get back into the octagon after a fifth-round KO/TKO loss to Kamaru Usman at UFC 245 on Dec. 14, 2019, losing the strap in that championship bout. A win over a 38-year-old Woodley might not get him quite back on track for a title fight, but a loss would certainly be devastating toward that endeavor.

Woodley might not land the volume of punches that Covington does, but he does have pinpoint accuracy. He leads 49.27 to 37.30 in significant strike accuracy percentage. However, Woodley will be trying his hardest to avoid going to the canvas, or this one could be done early. Covington has an amazing 4.91 takedown average and a 51.79 takedown accuracy percentage.

Colby Covington vs. Tyron Woodley betting odds

Odds via BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated at 8:05 a.m. ET.

Tapping Covington (-334) on the 2-way line for the overall fight result isn’t good gambling, as you cannot risk more than three times your potential return. He is an amazing value on the 5-way line, however, as taking COVINGTON BY KO/TKO, DQ OR SUBMISSION (+333) is a fabulous value. Pinpointing COVINGTON BY SUBMISSION (+900) is also worth a small-unit play, as it’s just too tempting to pass up.

Normally I like to suggest a round or two for the fight finish, and here I’d like to suggest a three-round spread. Taking ROUND 2 (+800), ROUND 3 (+1000) and ROUND 4 (+1200) will also return substantial profit, even if you bet all three and one comes through. Consider UNDER 4.5 ROUNDS (+165), too, as that’s an amazing value if you expect this one to finish inside the distance. NO (+150) ON ‘WILL THE FIGHT GO THE DISTANCE’ is also a good play.
