UFC on ESPN 32 results: Calvin Kattar sweeps scorecards in striking war against Giga Chikadze

In the first main event of 2022, featherweights delivered an incredible five rounds of high-paced action at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas.

The first UFC main event of the year delivered an incredible battle that could very well be in the conversation for end-of-the-year awards.

Featherweight contenders took center stage on Saturday evening as[autotag] Calvin Kattar[/autotag] met Giga Chikadze. In what promised to be an all-action affair, the fighters turned in five rounds of high-paced action, surpassing expectations. When it was all said and done, Kattar (23-5 MMA, 7-3 UFC) recorded a clean sweep against Chikadze (14-3 MMA, 7-1 UFC) with scores of 50-45, 50-45, and 50-44 from the judges.

The featherweight bout was the UFC on ESPN 32 main event at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas. It aired on ESPN.

Chikadze got the action started quickly with a series of kicks followed by a punching combination to the head. Kattar did not fire back immediately, choosing to pressure and stalk his opponent, searching for an opening. Moments later, Chikadze unleashed a wild flurry of kicks and punches, but tripped, and Kattar took advantage by securing a takedown and taking top position on the mat.

The position stalled for a moment and then both men began looking for submissions. The round closed with Kattar landing a couple of strikes and both men returned to their corner to prepare for the next frame.

Striking exchanges led by Chikadze started the action in the second. Crisp punches from both men landed, but Kattar’s forward pressure kept Chikadze working while moving backward. The left jab landed repeatedly from Chikadze, but Kattar would answer back with clean counter punches of his own, including a well-timed spinning elbow. Kattar ended with a takedown in the final seconds, closing out a high-paced round of striking action.

Forward pressure from Kattar continued to set the tone in the third, peppering Chikadze with strikes, who didn’t keep his hands up to defend the oncoming blows. The momentum of the fight seemed to favor Kattar in the third, as Chikadze slowed his volume and appeared off-balance at times, although he did end the round with a nice combination.

Early in the fourth, Chiakdze mixed in a few kicks and defended a takedown attempt as Kattar continued to press the action. With the blood flowing from a cut on Chikadze’s eye, the striking exchanges heated up again. Kattar began leading with elbows, trying his best to put his opponent away, but Chikadze remained standing and returned fire until the end of the round.

Sensing he was down in the fight, Chikadze came out firing hard in the last round. Kattar remained calm throughout the initial flurries and returned to pressuring forward and landing punches. Keeping his opponent circling on the outside, Kattar’s combinations continued to cause damage throughout the round as Chikadze fired back. In the closing seconds, a hard series of elbows sent Chikadze to the mat, but time expired before he could get a finish.

The incredible battle went to the scorecards with Kattar earning the unanimous decision victory.

Kattar rebounded in incredible fashion from a tough unanimous decision loss to Max Holloway a year prior. Entering the contest at No. 8 in the latest USA Today/MMA Junkie featherweight rankings, he maintains his position as a top contender in the division by knocking off Chikadze who entered at No. 12. Prior to his setback against Holloway, Kattar defeated Jeremy Stephens and Dan Ige in back-to-back fights.

The loss for Chikadze snaps a nine-fight win streak and also marks his first loss under the UFC banner. He entered the contest on a three-fight finishing streak as well, ending fights early against Jamey Simmons, Cub Swanson, and Edson Barboza in succession.

[autotag]Calvin Kattar[/autotag] returned from a one-year layoff on Saturday to defeat [autotag]Giga Chikadze[/autotag] in the UFC on ESPN 32 main event.

After taking a brutal beating from Max Holloway in a memorable defeat, Kattar (23-5 MMA, 7-3 UFC) got back in the octagon and derailed the streaking Chikadze (14-3 MMA, 7-1 UFC) by dominant unanimous decision in the matchup of featherweight contenders at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas.

UFC on ESPN 32 results: Jake Collier runs through Chase Sherman for quick finish

The UFC on ESPN 32 co-main event ended quickly, thanks to Jake Collier.

[autotag]Jake Collier[/autotag] prepared for a firefight against [autotag]Chase Sherman[/autotag], but the bout was over in less than three minutes.

At UFC on ESPN 32, Collier (13-6 MMA, 5-5 UFC) submitted Sherman (15-9 MMA, 3-8 UFC) via rear-naked choke at 2:26 of Round 1. The heavyweight bout was the card’s co-main event at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas. It aired on ESPN.

The fight started out, as every fight does, in the striking department. Both men landed punches, but when the fight hit the mat, it was all Collier. He mounted Sherman and landed brutal ground-and-pound before he swiftly submitted his fellow behemoth.

Collier, 33, moves to 2-2 in his most recent four since he moved to heavyweight. After a quick TKO loss to Tom Aspinall, Collier defeated Gian Villante. In his most recent fight prior to Saturday, Collier lost to Carlos Felipe via split decision at UFC 263.

As for Sherman, his losing skid extends to three. After his UFC release in 2018, he worked his way back to the promotion and re-signed in early 2020. After a win in his promotional return, Sherman lost back-to-back fights against Andrei Arlovski and Parker Porter prior to Saturday.

UFC on ESPN 32 results: Katlyn Chookagian cruises vs. Jennifer Maia, extends streak to three

Technical striking and calculated grappling led Katlyn Chookagian to victory on Saturday in Las Vegas.

Whether her style is aesthetically pleasing or not does not matter; [autotag]Katlyn Chookagian[/autotag] continues to win.

At UFC on ESPN 32, Chookagian (17-4 MMA, 10-4 UFC) cruised to a dominant unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27) win over [autotag]Jennifer Maia[/autotag] (19-8-1 MMA, 4-4 UFC).

The women’s flyweight bout was part of the UFC on ESPN 32 main card at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas. It aired on ESPN.

The opening round began with technical striking. The fighters went jab for jab. Midway through the frame, Chookagian clinched Maia and took her to the canvas where she controlled the fight. Maia got up right before the bell, before the round ended.

Chookagian made things dirty in Round 2 as she utilized the clinch early and often. Maia struggled to muster up any sort of offense. Her strikes missed and her clinch attempts were dodged.

In Round 3, Chookagian cruised with more technical striking. Maia’s cardio and confidence held up, but it wasn’t enough to score on the judges’ scorecards as Chookagian won a sweeping unanimous decision.

With the win, Chookagian has now won three in a row since her failed October 2020 bid against former champion Jessica Andrade. Since 2019, Chookagian has only lost to Andrade and UFC women’s flyweight champion Valentina Shevchenko.

As for Maia, the loss brings her to 2-2 in her most recent four. After a win over Joanne Wood, Maia lost a unanimous decision title shot against Valentina Shevchenko at UFC 255. She returned to defeat Jessica Eye via unanimous decision at UFC 264 before she lost Saturday.

UFC on ESPN 32 video: Viacheslav Borshchev folds Dakota Bush with nasty body shot

Viacheslav Borshchev earned the first UFC finish of the year when he halted Dakota Bush in vicious fashion.

After a string of decisions to open UFC on ESPN 32 on Saturday, [autotag]Viacheslav Borshchev[/autotag] earned the first octagon finish of 2022 when he stopped [autotag]Dakota Bush[/autotag] in the opening round.

Borshchev (6-1 MMA, 1-0 UFC) showed plenty of confidence in his UFC debut. He went toe-to-toe with Bush (8-4 MMA, 0-2 UFC) in the lightweight bout at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas, and it didn’t take long to finish the job.

The Team Alpha Male product cornered Bush against the fence and unleashed a powerful combination that was highlighted by a nasty left hook to the body. Bush immediately folded from the shot, then Borshchev landed a few more hammerfists to get the stoppage at the 3:47 mark of Round 1.

Check out the replay below (via Twitter):

With the win, Borshchev has now earned all five of his career finishes by knockout. None was bigger, however, than his effort at UFC on ESPN 32.

“I believe in the liver shot,” Borshchev said in his post-fight interview with Michael Bisping. “It’s a good move. I got him there to the body.”
