Cory Sandhagen out of UFC on ESPN+ 24 after Frankie Edgar removed

Bad news for Cory Sandhagen, who was looking forward to this fight.

[autotag]Cory Sandhagen[/autotag] won’t be fighting at UFC on ESPN+ 24, after all.

A UFC bantamweight contender, Sandhagen (12-1 MMA, 5-0 UFC) was the odd man out when originally scheduled opponent [autotag]Frankie Edgar[/autotag] was removed from the card and booked for this past Saturday’s UFC on ESPN+ 23.

Edgar (23-8-1 MMA, 17-8-1 UFC) was a fill-in for former UFC featherweight title challenger Brian Ortega, taking a short-notice main event fight against Chan Sung Jung. Despite Edgar accepting, the promotion kept the door open for him to still compete at UFC on ESPN+ 24 just one month later – until now.

Edgar, the former UFC lightweight champ, was finished by “The Korean Zombie” with strikes in the first round, and the damage from the loss subsequently has forced him out of UFC on ESPN+ 24. A person with knowledge of the situation confirmed to MMA Junkie that Edgar is out, and that Sandhagen will not get a replacement. The person asked to remain anonymous since the promotion hasn’t made an official announcement.

MMA DNA was the first to report the news.

Sandhagen, 27, was one of 2019’s rising stars at 135 pounds. The Coloradan went 3-0 on the year, defeating Mario Bautista, John Lineker, and Raphael Assuncao.

UFC on ESPN+ 24 takes place Jan. 25 at PNC Arena in Raleigh, N.C. The card streams on ESPN+.

With the change, the current UFC on ESPN+ 24 lineup includes:

  • Curtis Blaydes vs. Junior Dos Santos
  • Michael Chiesa vs. Rafael dos Anjos
  • Tony Gravely vs. Brett Johns
  • Hannah Cifers vs. Angela Hill

Brianna Van Buren out, Angela Hill steps in to face Hannah Cifers at UFC on ESPN+ 24

Angela Hill steps in to take on Hannah Cifers at UFC on ESPN+ 24.

[autotag]Angela Hill[/autotag] is stepping in on short notice once again to save the day.

Hill (10-7 MMA, 5-7 UFC) is set to replace [autotag]Brianna Van Buren[/autotag] against [autotag]Hannah Cifers[/autotag] (10-3 MMA, 2-1 UFC) at UFC on ESPN+ 24. A person with knowledge of the matchup informed MMA Junkie of the change, but requested anonymity since the UFC has yet to make an announcement.

Van Buren was forced out of the bout due to undisclosed reasons.

UFC on ESPN+ 24 takes place Jan. 25 at PNC Arena in Raleigh, N.C. The card streams on ESPN+.

The replacement scenario will mark the third time in Hill’s past four fights that Hill steps in on short notice. She is coming off a third-round doctor’s stoppage win over Ariane Carnelossi in September, which was her fourth fight in 2019. She will look to string two wins in a row for the first time in her UFC career when she takes on Cifers.

Since dropping her UFC debut to Maycee Barber, Cifers has notched back-to-back wins over Polyana Viana, and most recently Jodie Esquibel at UFC 241 in August. She now gets the opportunity to fight close to home in Raleigh.

With the change, the current UFC on ESPN+ 24 lineup includes:

  • Curtis Blaydes vs. Junior Dos Santos
  • Michael Chiesa vs. Rafael dos Anjos
  • Frankie Edgar vs. Cory Sandhagen
  • Tony Gravely vs. Brett Johns
  • Hannah Cifers vs. Angela Hill
  • Jordan Espinosa vs. Alex Perez
  • Lina Lansberg vs. Sara McMann
  • Justine Kish vs. Lucie Pudilova
  • Arnold Allen vs. Josh Emmett
  • Bevon Lewis vs. Dequan Townsend
  • Jamahal Hill vs. Darko Stosic

Lewis hopes a third time will be the charm, as he was unable to earn a victory in either of his two UFC outings to date. After being signed off of Dana White’s Contender Series, Lewis was knocked out by Uriah Hall in his debut in December 2018.

Lewis’ bad luck continued in June, when he lost an unanimous decision to Darren Stewart at UFC 238.

Like Lewis, Townsend also will be seeking his first UFC victory. Moving down from light heavyweight, Townsend takes his second short-notice fight in as many bouts with the promotion. Townsend made his UFC debut in June, losing to Dalcha Lungiambula at UFC on ESPN 3.

With the change, the current UFC on ESPN+ 24 lineup includes:

  • Curtis Blaydes vs. Junior Dos Santos
  • Michael Chiesa vs. Rafael dos Anjos
  • Frankie Edgar vs. Cory Sandhagen
  • Tony Gravely vs. Brett Johns
  • Hannah Cifers vs. Brianna Van Buren
  • Jordan Espinosa vs. Alex Perez
