Now sober, Jeremy Stephens says tragedy brought new focus ahead of UFC on ESPN 22

“It’s been an experience” these past 11 months for Jeremy Stephens, who reconnected with his estranged mother after she almost died.

LAS VEGAS – On the surface, things might not look great for [autotag]Jeremy Stephens[/autotag], but the veteran slugger says the truth is really the exact opposite.

Despite being sidelined for the last 11 months and mired in a four-fight losing streak, Stephens said he used the time away to make some very significant life changes.

“It’s been an experience,” Stephens told reporters, including MMA Junkie, at Wednesday’s media session at the UFC Apex. “I’ve been fighting since I was 16 years old, and even back then I was probably fighting three, four times in a month, so it was good to take a step back. I had to do some mental stuff. I had a lot of things to really close out personally.

“I’ve been doing a lot of different type of work outside of this. It’s been really good for me. I’ve really left no stone unturned. I had a lot of personal stuff going on. It was a good year to take off and just kind of take some time, really set myself up for success. I kind of had to take a step back in order to take two steps forward.”

When Stephens mentions major changes, it’s not hyperbole. He reconnected with his estranged mother, a longtime drug addict whom he says nearly died and is now in need of constant supervision and assistance. He also addressed his own habits and elected to stop drinking.

“It’s been a journey,” Stephens said. “Believe me, I’ve left no stone unturned. I’ve never been happier in my life. I’ve never been more clear. I’ve never been more focused. Saturday night, you guys are in for a treat. I’m telling you, this is going to be my best performance.”

[lawrence-related id=602988]

Stephens (28-18 MMA, 15-17 UFC) also changed weight classes, returning to lightweight at UFC on ESPN 22 following an eight-year stint at 145 pounds. He takes on Drakkar Klose (11-2-1 MMA, 5-2 UFC) at Saturday’s event at the UFC Apex, which airs on ESPN following prelims on ESPN and ESPN+.

It’s a move Stephens hopes will allow him to perform at his best and hopefully bring him back to the win column.

“It’s not about the show; come Saturday night, it’s all about the win,” Stephens said. “Win, win, win, no matter what, and having my hand raised. I don’t like going out there and being one of those ‘performance’ guys: ‘Oh, I still put on a f*cking show.’ I got a family to feed, bro. I’m not making top dollar like I should be. I’m not making these red panty nights.”

And with his personal life in order, Stephens is hoping his professional life follows suit. With an incredible 14 years of experience in the UFC, Stephens believes, at 34, it’s time for him to maximize his potential, both in performance and earnings.

“I’m moving up a division because I want these exciting fights,” Stephens said. “I want these matchups. F*ck a belt. I’m looking to fight a Nate Diaz, a Conor McGregor, calf-kick him clear the f*ck out of here, as well. I’m looking to get paid and laid, bro, so that’s why I’m here.

“I don’t like losing. It’s all about the win come Saturday night, and I’m going to prove to the world once again why you don’t ever count Jeremy Stephens out.”

Drakkar Klose plans featherweight move if he can ‘starch’ Jeremy Stephens at UFC on ESPN 22

Drakkar Klose’s future will be at featherweight if he’s victorious against Jeremy Stephens.

[autotag]Drakkar Klose[/autotag]’s future will be at featherweight if he’s victorious against [autotag]Jeremy Stephens[/autotag].

Klose (11-2-1 MMA, 5-2 UFC) meets Stephens in the co-main event of Saturday’s UFC on ESPN 22, which takes place at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas.

It’ll be the first time Klose enters the octagon in over a year. Two of his fights, against Jai Herbert and Luis Pena, were canceled in February, and he is eager to return. But Klose says if he’s able to get a definitive win over Stephens, he’ll drop down to 145 pounds.

“I wanted to fight four times this year,” Klose told MMA Junkie Radio. “This will be my first fight, but second weight cut, just flow with it. After this, depending on how it goes, if I go in there and starch him, cut down to ’45 and give it a run for the title at that weight.”

Klose will be taking on the experienced Stephens (28-18 MMA, 15-17 UFC), a gritty veteran who’s battled the who’s who throughout his career. Both men like to throw down, which Klose thinks makes for an inevitably exciting scrap.

“He’s a big name, he’s a pioneer of this sport, and it’s just a big opportunity to get out there and put him on my resume,” Klose said.

He continued, “I’m excited because I think me and him are similar. We go out there and throw and someone’s gonna get knocked out. It’s gonna come down to who’s smarter. I think I might be. He has a lot more miles than me so I think I may be a little smarter, so it’s gonna be fireworks.”

In his past outing, Klose saw his three-fight winning streak snapped at the hands of Beneil Dariush at UFC 248. In one of the most entertaining fight-ending sequences, Klose rocked Dariush, but paid for it when he got overzealous and clipped himself, which cost him the fight.

But this time, Klose has learned from his mistakes and vows to show a more mature approach.

“I had a game plan when I was fighting Beneil and once I rocked him, it went out the window,” Klose said. “I got reckless, and I paid for it. This fight, I have a game plan, and I’m gonna stick to it because, at the end of the day, I just need to win. I want to entertain the fans, but I need to get that check.”

Lupita Godinez not surprised to be heavy favorite for UFC debut vs. Jessica Penne

Former LFA champ Lupita Godinez is not surprised she’s a heavy favorite entering her promotional debut.

Unlike many UFC newcomers looking to make their debut on short notice, [autotag]Lupita Godinez[/autotag] enters her first fight with the UFC as a heavy favorite.

A former LFA women’s strawweight champion, Godinez (5-0 MMA, 0-0 UFC) is set to compete for the first time under the UFC banner this Saturday at UFC on ESPN 22 in Las Vegas. She’ll take on former UFC title challenger and Invicta FC champion Jessica Penne (12-5 MMA, 1-3 UFC) on the prelims.

Many betting sites have Godinez close to a three-to-one favorite. The unbeaten prospect is not surprised she enters her UFC debut under these conditions.

“It doesn’t surprise me given the last fight that I had and the fact that (Penne) hasn’t fought in many years, so I think people are not really sure what to expect from her,” Godinez told MMA Junkie in Spanish.

“I’m mostly thankful for all the people that believe in me and that have been following me since I started and the fans and everyone. I’m relaxed, that doesn’t affect me at all. Obviously, it excites me and motivates me, but this is a fight and anything can happen. I’m not much of a betting person, but I appreciate that people are believing in me.”

Penne hasn’t fought since April 2017. She was suspended by USADA, the UFC’s anti-doping agency partner, for a failed test in March 2017. She was originally given a four-year ban, but later the suspension was reduced to 20 months. The MMA veteran attempted to make a return twice in 2019 but withdrew from both bouts due to injury.

[lawrence-related id=599833,562953]

Although Penne hasn’t fought in almost four years, Godinez recognizes she’s fighting a veteran of the sport who’s a former UFC title challenger. Godinez, who was born in Mexico but now trains in Canada, is grateful she’ll take on a big name for her first UFC fight.

“Yeah, of course, I couldn’t have asked for a better opponent,” Godinez said. “The truth is that I’m really happy for this matchup and that’s it. I’m excited to be sharing the cage with a veteran like her who’s been fighting for many years.”

Godinez feels no pressure ahead of the biggest fight of her young MMA career. She’s campaigned for a shot in the UFC for many months and can’t wait to prove to the UFC fanbase why she’s regarded by some as one of the best prospects in women’s strawweight.

“The truth is that I’m really happy and excited to start this new chapter of my career and I feel very relaxed,” Godinez explained. “This is just another fight for me, but in a different organization and I’m simply going to make more money and get seen by more people. I’m very relaxed and comfortable knowing I have the level to be in there. I’m just going to show it on Saturday.”
