UFC on ESPN 20 bonuses: Ike Villanueva skipped after huge knockout win

Warlley Alves and Umar Nurmagomedov earned “Performance” nods, while Mike Davis and Mason Jones claimed “Fight of the Night” money.

The UFC handed out four $50,000 bonuses Wednesday at UFC on ESPN 20 from Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi, and one omission raised eyebrows.

[autotag]Ike Villanueva[/autotag] picked up his first UFC win with a one-punch, walk-off knockout of Vinicius Moreira in their heavyweight bout.

With his back potentially up against the wall, Villanueva (16-11 MMA, 1-2 UFC) landed a massive overhand right early in Round 2 that floored Moreira. The knockout was so devastating, Moreira spun around because of the punch. Still, and perhaps surprisingly, it wasn’t enough to earn a bonus.

UFC officials announced the winners following the event. Check out the list below.

UFC on ESPN 20 results: Michael Chiesa grinds out Neil Magny, calls out Colby Covington

“The election is over,” Michael Chiesa screamed into the camera, calling out Colby Covington after his win.

[autotag]Michael Chiesa[/autotag] just keeps on rolling.

At UFC on ESPN 20, Chiesa (17-4 MMA, 11-4 UFC) kept his welterweight unbeaten streak alive when he defeated [autotag]Neil Magny[/autotag] by unanimous decision with three scores of 49-46.

The welterweight bout was the UFC on ESPN 20 main event at Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi. It aired on ESPN.

Through the first two rounds, Chiesa’s game plan became clear: tie up Magny and take him down. He succeeded in doing so and displayed strong wrestling to control Magny on the mat.

In Round 3, Magny briefly changed the momentum by taking Chiesa down. However, shortly after Chiesa rose back to his feet and resumed his gritty pursuit of control.

Round 4 was much like the first two. Chiesa resorted back to his wrestling. After he took Magny down, Chiesa maneuvered to the back before he took full mount. As the round progressed, Magny turned the momentum and attempted an inverted triangle, perhaps his biggest chance of the fight, but Chiesa escaped.

Magny came out aggressive in the final round, needing a finish to win. Chiesa evaded Magny as the clock wound down before he secured another takedown where he remained in top position for the remainder of the fight.

After the fight, Chiesa called out former UFC interim champion Colby Covington in his post-fight interview.

“The election is over!” Chiesa screamed into the camera. “Colby Covington, your schtick is done! You’re next, boy!”

Chiesa moves to 4-0 since moving up to welterweight in 2018. The win over Magny followed victories over Rafael dos Anjos, Diego Sanchez, and Carlos Condit. The fight was Chiesa’s second UFC main event.

Magny suffers his first loss in four fights. His previous defeat came against Santiago Ponzinibbio at UFC Fight Night 140 in November 2018.

UFC on ESPN 20 results: Warlley Alves demolishes Mounir Lazzez, calls out ‘marijuana guy’ Nate Diaz

Returning Brazilian Warlley Alvez bounced back into the octagon with a big win, then issued a big-name callout at UFC on ESPN 20.

After a year spent on the sidelines due to injuries, [autotag]Warlley Alves[/autotag] returned to the octagon with a bang as he demolished [autotag]Mounir Lazzez[/autotag] at UFC on ESPN 20, then issued a direct callout to Nate Diaz.

The pair met in the co-main event at Etihad Arena, and Alves (14-4 MMA, 8-4 UFC) wasted no time getting started, as he quickly closed the distance, slammed a low kick into Lazzez’s leg, and unloaded a salvo of close-range punches before forcing the action up against the cage.

A series of elbows and a spinning backfist followed as the Brazilian continued his high-octane start to the action. Alves then took the action to the mat and began to move toward Lazzez’s back, but the Tunisian had the move well scouted and managed to get back to his feet and connect with a spinning elbow to register his first serious strike of the matchup.

However, Alves refused to give “The Sniper” a moment’s rest and immediately resumed his attack, letting rip with three rapid-fire body kicks that folded up Lazzez (10-2 MMA, 1-1 UFC) and forced the stoppage as referee Herb Dean stepped in to end the onslaught at the 2:35 mark.

The victory meant that Alves bounced back from his November 2019 loss to Randy Brown at UFC Fight Night 164 as the Brazilian confirmed his return to action with an eye-catching display.

“I’m here, I’m back!” Alves told Daniel Cormier before calling out Diaz over his use of marijuana.

“I don’t like marijuana guys. I don’t like that,” he said. “I hate that, because it’s a bad example for the sport. Nate Diaz, fight with me because I’ll prove it. Winners don’t use drugs. You’re a marijuana guy. I’m not like that. Let’s go, Nate Diaz.”

UFC on ESPN 20 results: Viviane Araujo dominates gritty Roxanne Modafferi

Viviane Araujo showed a well-rounded attack en route to a unanimous decision win over “The Happy Warrior.”

[autotag]Viviane Araujo[/autotag]’s showing at UFC on ESPN 20 was a dominant one.

For the majority of the 15-minute bout, Araujo (10-2 MMA, 4-1 UFC) outworked former UFC women’s flyweight title challenger [autotag]Roxanne Modafferi[/autotag] en route to a unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-26).

The women’s flyweight bout was part of the UFC on ESPN 20 main card at Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi. It aired on ESPN.

Throughout the fight, Araujo displayed the skill differential between herself and Modafferi (25-18 MMA, 4-6 UFC) in various areas. The gap in the levels of the two fighters’ striking, in particular, was on full display.

Late in Round 1, Araujo appeared to be close to a submission. However, the sequence never played out in full as the horn sounded.

In Round 2, Modafferi landed her best offense of the night – a right hand that briefly stunned Araujo. A second later, however, Araujo was back to dominating.

Round 3 was more of the same, with Araujo having her way with Modafferi on the feet and on the ground. A late Araujo takedown put a stamp on an already one-sided performance. Swollen and bloody, Modafferi displayed her signature toughness and veteran grit en route to the final horn.

With the victory, Araujo turns a lone unanimous decision win over Montana De La Rosa in September into a winning streak. Araujo has only lost once since 2017 – a unanimous decision defeat to Jessica Eye in December 2019.

As for Modafferi, her streak of alternating losses and wins continues. Since her UFC return, a December 2017 title fight vs. Nicco Montano, Modafferi has never accumulated a winning streak or losing skid.
