UFC on ABC 7 weigh-in video: Tony Ferguson, Michael Chiesa hit welterweight for must-win matchup

Tony Ferguson and Michael Chiesa have made weight for their UFC on ABC 7 fight that featured a combined 10 consecutive losses.

ABU DHABI – Eight years ago they were scheduled for a lightweight bout, but this time [autotag]Tony Ferguson[/autotag] and [autotag]Michael Chiesa[/autotag] will do battle at welterweight after making weight for UFC on ABC 7.

At official weigh-ins Friday morning on Yas Island, Ferguson (25-10 MMA, 15-8 UFC) and Chiesa (18-7 MMA, 11-7 UFC) made weight for their clash Saturday at Etihad Arena (ABC, ESPN2, ESPN+).

It’s a critical contest for both winners of “The Ultimate Fighter” reality series. Former interim UFC champ Ferguson is fighting for his career after losing seven consecutive bouts, while Chiesa is in a desperate situation of his own with a three-fight losing skid.

Ferguson tipped the scale at 170 pounds for just his fifth welterweight fight under the UFC banner, while Chiesa was also 170 pounds for his eighth fight since leaving lightweight.

Guram Kutateladze motivated to rebound at UFC on ABC 7 after ‘tough pill to swallow’

Guram Kutateladze has shown off his skills in the octagon, but the results haven’t translated.

ABU DHABI – [autotag]Guram Kutateladze[/autotag] has shown off his skills in the octagon, but the results haven’t translated.

Kutateladze (12-4 MMA, 1-2 UFC) will look to snap a two-fight losing skid when he takes on debuting Jordan Vucenic (13-2 MMA, 0-0 UFC) in Saturday’s UFC on ABC 7 (ABC, ESPN2, ESPN+) prelims at Etihad Arena.

After defeating current top lightweight contender Mateusz Gamrot in his UFC debut, Kutateladze was edged out by Damir Ismagulov, then finished late in a come-from-behind win by Elves Brener.

“It was tough fights, but once again, it’s the fight game,” Kutateladze told MMA Junkie. “That’s how it works. Sometimes you win, sometimes you learn, and that’s what we did. I talked with the team. I spoke with close and near friends of mine. I did my homework. I did work on mistakes.

“We did some adjustments and improved our game. Not only athletic, not only practical, but also mental and psychological, too. That’s a tough pill to swallow, but that’s what we do. That’s life, and I’ve been hit much harder from life than any cage fight.”

Kutateladze takes on former Cage Warriors champion Vucenic, who’s past five wins have come by submission. However, Kutateladze is confident he beats him everywhere.

“He’s quite an all-around fighter,” Kutateladze said. “He has good standup, good jiu-jitsu, but in my opinion, I have a higher level of striking, a higher level of jiu-jitsu and wrestling than my opponent. So, I believe in myself, and I believe in my skills that wherever the fight is going to be, I’m going to be ready for it.”

Cory Sandhagen finds it ‘weird’ that people are counting him out vs. Umar Nurmagomedov at UFC on ABC 7

Cory Sandhagen is motivated to prove the doubters wrong at UFC on ABC 7.

ABU DHABI – [autotag]Cory Sandhagen[/autotag] is motivated to prove his doubters wrong at UFC on ABC 7.

According to Bet MGM, Sandhagen (17-4 MMA, 10-3 UFC) is a +240 underdog against [autotag]Umar Nurmagomedov[/autotag] (17-0 MMA, 5-0 UFC) in Saturday’s headliner (ABC, ESPN2, ESPN+) at Etihad Arena.

Considering Nurmagomedov is far less experienced, former interim title challenger Sandhagen can’t understand why he has so many naysayers.

“Umar is a unique fighter,” Sandhagen told reporters, including MMA Junkie, at UFC on ABC 7 media day. “Stylistically, he’s a really tough fight. I had to work in a lot of overtime hours in order to make sure I was prepared for this fight. But the rankings, him coming up, the odds, the bettors, I couldn’t honestly give a sh*t less.

“I’m focused on what I’m going to do Saturday, and that’s executing underneath the lights, and I can’t wait for that peace because it’s weird that people are counting me out for this one, but I just can’t wait to prove all those people wrong.”

Outside of his quick submission loss to Aljamain Sterling in June 2020, Sandhagen said his takedown defense hasn’t been properly tested.

“No one’s seen me defensively wrestle ever almost except the situation with Sterling,” Sandhagen said. “That’s what we’ll call that loss, a situation. The situation with Sterling where – and that was what, four years ago? I was two years into my career. I’m six, seven years into my career now and still no one’s really seen it.

“So, just another element that I get to show to people, and man, I’m excited for this one just to show how great I am because Umar is going to bring out the best in me, and he already has in this camp, and I’m pumped for it. I can’t wait to watch myself fight.”

Michal Oleksiejczuk before UFC on ABC 7: Shara Magomedov a great kickboxer, but my boxing better

Michal Oleksiejczuk is happy to test his standup against Shara Magomedov’s at UFC on ABC 7.

ABU DHABI – [autotag]Michal Oleksiejczuk[/autotag] is happy to test his standup against [autotag]Shara Magomedov[/autotag]’s.

Oleksiejczuk (19-8 MMA, 17-6 UFC) takes on Magomedov (13-0 MMA, 2-0 UFC) in Saturday’s UFC on ABC 7 (ABC, ESPN2, ESPN+) co-main event at Etihad Arena in Yas Island, Abu Dhabi. Both fighters are statistically proven knockout artists, and despite being on a two-fight losing skid, Oleksiejczuk doesn’t plan on backing down from the striking exchanges with Magomedov.

“Shara is a great kickboxer, but I think that my boxing is better than Shara,” Oleksiejczuk told reporters, including MMA Junkie, at UFC on ABC 7 media day.

Oleksiejczuk will also get an opportunity to bounce highly touted Magomedov out of the ranks of the unbeaten.

“This is a very good fight for me because Shara is a very popular fighter, and this fight will be very exciting for me, for fans, and I am very happy,” Oleksiejczuk said. “I want to fight standing. Standing is my best side, and I like to make pressure, I like hard punches, and I want to knock out my opponent.”

Oleksiejczuk’s past few fights have been fan friendly, coming against the likes of Kevin Holland and Michel Pereira. He is happy to draw another popular name in the division.

“I want to fight with the best fighters in the middleweight division in the UFC,” Oleksiejczuk said. “Shara is an exciting fighter, and he’s very popular and that’s all. I like this fight.”

Umar Nurmagomedov hopes ‘bigger name’ Sean O’Malley beats Merab Dvalishvili at UFC 306

Umar Nurmagomedov, who meets Cory Sandhagen at UFC Abu Dhabi, sees more upside in a title fight with Sean O’Malley.

ABU DHABI – [autotag]Umar Nurmagomedov[/autotag] sees more upside in a UFC bantamweight title fight with [autotag]Sean O’Malley[/autotag] than [autotag]Merab Devalishvili[/autotag].

Nurmagomedov (17-0 MMA, 5-0 UFC) says he’s been promised a title fight if he can get past Cory Sandhagen (17-4 MMA, 10-3 UFC) in Saturday’s UFC on ABC 7 (ABC, ESPN2, ESPN+) main event at Etihad Arena.

O’Malley (18-1 MMA, 10-1 UFC) defends his bantamweight title against Dvalishvili (17-4 MMA, 10-2 UFC) on Sept. 16 in the Noche UFC main event, and Nurmagomedov would rather fight O’Malley for the title if both are victorious.

“I don’t know. It’s difficult,” Nurmagomedov told reporters, including MMA Junkie, at UFC on ABC 7 media day. “For me, it doesn’t matter. I can fight with both. With Merab, I think he will try to take me down, but I will strike with him. In striking, he’s not good. With Sean, I will do whatever I want.

“For anybody, I think it’s hard to say who’s going to win between them. I wish O’Malley wins, I think he has bigger name. But for me, it doesn’t matter fighting with Merab or with O’Malley.”

Nurmagomedov likes that his fight is just a month prior to O’Malley vs. Dvalishvili, lining him up perfectly to fight the winner.

“Yes, it’s very good,” Nurmagomedov said. “It’s very good they fight next month. I will try to go to see this fight at the Sphere in Las Vegas. I want to watch this fight, and I hope I will fight with the champion like beginning of next year – January, February, before Ramadan. It’s going to be very good time.”

Before UFC on ABC 7, Marlon Vera warns Deiveson Figueiredo about consequences of takedowns

“He can try to hump my leg, but I’m going to slice him up with elbows,” Marlon Vera said of Deiveson Figueiredo.

ABU DHABI – [autotag]Marlon Vera[/autotag] plans on making [autotag]Deiveson Figueiredo[/autotag] pay if he shoots on him.

Vera (23-9-1 MMA, 15-8 UFC) will look to rebound from his title loss when he takes on Figueiredo (23-3-1 MMA, 12-3-1 UFC) on Saturday’s UFC on ABC 7 (ABC, ESPN2, ESPN+) main card at Etihad Arena.

Former flyweight champion Figueiredo has shown off his ground game since moving up to 135 pounds, defeating Rob Font and then submitting Cody Garbrandt. Vera is expecting a similar approach from the Brazilian.

“His last two fights, based on 35’ers, he’s been pretty much only wrestling,” Vera told reporters, including MMA Junkie at UFC on ABC 7 media day. “He’s just been changing levels and going for a takedown. I don’t know if he feels the size difference. I don’t know if he’s just that good on the ground, but I know for a fact I’m good on the ground. So, if we go to the ground, I’ll be just fine.”

Figueiredo has trained at Khabib Nurmagomedov’s gym since touching down in Abu Dhabi. Vera scoffed at the linkup.

“F*ck yeah, Khabib, that’s cool,” Vera said. “He can try to hump my leg, but I’m going to slice him up with elbows. Even if he’s three months with Khabib or a year with Khabib, I don’t give a f*ck.”

Vera has never been finished in 33 professional fights. Figueiredo predicted he’ll be the first to knock out Vera, but “Chito” isn’t buying it.

“That probably means he’s going to f*cking just shoot and smell my crotch in the first second of the fight,” Vera said. “So, we know how this works. Fighters say something and do something else, but I mean, if we wants to try, we can give it a try.

“I never take pride in these things because I don’t want to talk about it and put it out in the universe. I just work hard and do the best I can, but yeah, he can give it a try.”

‘Opening new doors’: Rising UFC star Shara Magomedov crafted image for Hollywood, fight success

Rising UFC star Shara Magomedov is a promoter’s dream – and apparently a Hollywood director’s, too.

Take one look at [autotag]Shara Magomedov[/autotag], and you’ll see he’s one of the most unique characters in MMA – a combat sport full of some of the most interesting people on Earth.

Just two fights into his UFC tenure, Magomedov (13-0 MMA, 2-0 UFC) has already caught the attention of fight fans around the world. He returns Saturday at UFC on ABC 7 in his highest-profile fight to date: his first promotional co-main event vs. Michal Oleksiejczuk (19-8 MMA, 7-6 UFC).

Ahead of this fight, Magomedov flew to Hollywood to feature in an unannounced film project. He spent seven days there, eagerly awaiting the next fight call. He even used live movie props to craft a fighter callout video.

“It doesn’t matter where I’m at or what I’m doing,” Magomedov told MMA Junkie and other reporters Thursday at a pre-fight news conference in Abu Dhabi. “I’m always thinking about the fights. This is my No. 1 goal about everything. Even when I was on set, this is the one thing I think about. I was waiting for the phone to ring. I was waiting for Ali Abdelaziz, my manager, to call me. Even at one point, I took the iguana that was being used on set, and I called out Kevin Holland with it.

“So I always think about the fights. This is my No. 1 goal, no matter what I do. This is what I eat, live, and breathe. I’m concentrating on fights moving forward. First, I would like to become the people’s champ. Then obviously the goal is to be crowned champ, get the gold, and get the main bounty, which is the belt.”

Whether it’s his resemblance to a pirate, his kick-heavy fighting style, or something else, Magomedov has made himself a promoter’s dream – and apparently a director’s, too.

“This is just the way I’ve chosen myself and ever since I’ve chosen this way, it was a path that I was on,” Magomedov said. “You can take this path, another path opens up. You take another path and the next path. So no, this is something we do ourselves. We improvise. We have this image and we’re going to keep moving with it. This is not a PR manager that’s working for us. We don’t have one like that. It’s just something that we’re moving along with our own story and we’re going to keep opening new doors.”

Extracurriculars aside, fighting is paramount for “Shara Bullet.” Through two UFC fights, he thinks he’s showed the world only a fraction of what he’s capable of. He hopes Saturday’s performance is more reflective of his entire skill set and abilities.

“I don’t I’ve showed even half of my potential,” Magomedov said. “I’ve have difficulties preparing for my first two fights. There hasn’t been enough time to prepare fully. But now with the opportunities the UFC has been given me, I’ve been able to prepare better, to be in better shape, and I’m sure I’m going to show exciting fights. I’m going to make sure I show exciting wins going forward.”

Michael Chiesa before UFC on ABC 7: ‘I would be a fool to overlook’ struggling Tony Ferguson

“I’m training for the guy that I was supposed to fight eight years ago,” Michael Chiesa said of Tony Ferguson before they meet at UFC on ABC 7.

ABU DHABI – [autotag]Michael Chiesa[/autotag] isn’t underestimating [autotag]Tony Ferguson[/autotag] heading into UFC on ABC 7.

Chiesa (16-7 MMA, 11-7 UFC) will look to hand Ferguson (25-10 MMA, 15-8 UFC) a UFC record eighth consecutive loss when the pair square off on Saturday’s main card (ABC, ESPN2, ESPN+) at Etihad Arena.

Prior to his seven-fight losing skid, Ferguson was owner of one of the most impressive winning streaks at lightweight, winning 12 in a row. That’s the version Chiesa is preparing for.

“I would be a fool to train for the Tony Ferguson that’s on a skid,” Chiesa told reporters, including MMA Junkie, at UFC on ABC 7 media day. “I would be a fool to overlook him given the current situation with his career. I’m training for the guy that I was supposed to fight eight years ago. I’m training for the guy I was supposed to fight in the midst of this crazy win streak that he was on.

“Just because he’s 0-7 in his last seven fights doesn’t take away his offense. It doesn’t take away his skills. It doesn’t take away his D’Arce choke. It doesn’t take away all the things that he does very well. I look at some of those fights and kind of put an asterisk next to them.”

Chiesa was scheduled to face Ferguson at UFC Fight Night 91 in July 2016 but withdrew due to a back injury. Eight years later, he gets the opportunity to potentially be Ferguson’s final fight in the octagon.

“Absolutely, especially because it’s unfinished business, but there’s no bad blood between us,” Chiesa said. “That doesn’t mean Tony is necessarily the type of fighter to walk up and dap you up during fight week, but him and I definitely have a mutual respect for each other, so I think I’m his best and last dance partner, and let’s just look at the numbers. I’m 36, I’m 0-3 in my last three fights. It’s a fight that makes sense. It’s not Paddy Pimblett, who’s rolling hot right now,

“It’s not Beneil Dariush, it’s not Charles Oliveira. It’s a fight that makes sense, so I feel like I’m the perfect dance partner for him. Him back at his original weight class that he won ‘The Ultimate Fighter’ at, TUF champ vs. TUF champ, a fight that never happened. I’m the guy. But that doesn’t mean I’m going to send him riding off into the sunset on a win. I’ve got to go out there and beat the guy, and I plan on finishing him.”
