UFC on ABC 1 results: Li Jingliang knocks out Santiago Ponzinibbio in first

China’s Li Jingliang finished Santiago Ponzinibbio for his fourth win in his past five fights.

[autotag]Santiago Ponzinibbio[/autotag]’s timing was off after more than two years away from the octagon. And [autotag]Li Jingliang[/autotag] wasted little time making him pay.

Competing for the first time since 2018, Ponzinibbio (27-3 MMA, 9-2 UFC) whiffed on a big right hand in the opening round of their UFC on ABC 1 main-card welterweight bout on Saturday, and Jingliang (17-6 MMA, 9-4 UFC) responded with a ridiculous left hook that landed flush on the jaw, ending the bout with a knockout at the 4:25 mark.

Over the opening half of the first round, it became apparent that Ponzinibbio was having trouble finding his range, as Jingliang mixed low kicks with fluid movement and footwork to easily elude his foe.

Jingliang began to pick up the pace, and Ponzinibbio responded, only to be lured right into the fight-ending sequence, Jingliang landed one punch to the downed Ponzinibbio before referee Jason Herzog waved things off.

Jingliang now has won four of his past five fights, and his seventh UFC knockout tied him with former champion Matt Hughes for fourth in welterweight history. Ponzinibbio had a seven-fight winning streak snapped.

The welterweight bout was part of the UFC on ABC 1 main card at Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi. It aired on ABC and streamed on ESPN+ following prelims on ESPN+.

UFC on ABC 1 video: Alessio Di Chirico flips script, knocks out Joaquin Buckley with head kick

Joaquin Buckley’s viral kick stole the show in 2020, but Alessio Di Chirico proved he has quite the boot of his own.

[autotag]Joaquin Buckley[/autotag] will forever be known for his incredible head kick “Knockout of the Year” in 2020. However, at UFC on ABC 1, it was [autotag]Alessio Di Chirico[/autotag]’s turn.

Italy’s Di Chirico (12-5 MMA, 3-5 UFC) flipped the script early when he finished Buckley (12-4 MMA, 2-2 UFC) with a head kick of his own at 2:12 of Round 1.

The middleweight bout was part of the UFC on ABC 1 main card at Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi. It aired on ABC and streamed on ESPN+ following prelims on ESPN+.

With the win, Di Chirico snaps a three-fight losing skid, which dated back to June 2019. The Italian middleweight fighter now advances to 3-3 in his most recent six fights. The TKO win was his first since December 2017.

As for Buckley, the loss snaps a two-fight winning streak, which included knockouts over Impa Kasanganay and Jordan Wright. UFC on ABC 1 was the third time Buckley has lost by TKO in his professional career.

Video: Punahele Soriano rocks Dusko Todorovic, gets UFC on ABC era started with a bang

Punahele Soriano wasted little time getting the UFC on ABC era started with a bang.

[autotag]Punahele Soriano[/autotag] will go into the record books as the first fighter to win a UFC bout on ABC, and he did so in emphatic fashion.

In the first UFC meeting of undefeated fighters since Israel Adesanya defeated Paulo Costa at UFC 253, Soriano (8-0 MMA, 2-0 UFC) was a buzzsaw, dropping [autotag]Dusko Todorovic[/autotag] over and over before their UFC on ABC 1 middleweight main-card opener was waved off at the 4:48 mark of the opening round Saturday.

Soriano pushed a fast pace from the outset and didn’t hold back on putting everything into his punches. Todorovic (10-1 MMA, 1-1 UFC) did his best to use low kicks to try to establish range. But Soriano paid them no mind, as he waded in and landed big left hands over and over.

Several times, those lefts led to knockdowns. Todovoric kept getting back up. Late in the round, Todovoric got a breather when his mouthpiece got stuck between the bottom of the fence and the canvas. But it was to no avail, as Soriano once again landed a left for an unofficial fourth knockdown, and that time, referee Herb Dean called off the fight.

“I expected that exact fight,” Soriano said in his post-fight interview. “He hit me with some good shots and was kicking me no matter how hard I hit him. He was still focused and still trying to hit back.”

UFC on ABC 1 took place Saturday at Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi. The main card aired on ABC and ESPN+ following prelims on ESPN+.

UFC on ABC 1 heavyweights Carlos Felipe, Justin Tafa swing for the fences in all-out brawl

The heavyweights delivered a high-octane battle on the UFC on ABC 1 prelims.

[autotag]Carlos Felipe[/autotag] and [autotag]Justin Tafa[/autotag] could each very well walk away from UFC on ABC 1 with an extra $50,000 after the show they put on inside the cage.

Their heavyweight fight, which took place Saturday at Etihad Arena on Yas Island, Abu Dhabi, took place on the preliminary card. When the dust settled, it was Felipe who defeated Tafa by split decision (29-28, 28-29, 29-28).

For the majority of three rounds, Felipe (10-1 MMA, 2-1 UFC) and Tafa stood in the pocket. Both men swung major heat in a boxing-heavy affair. A close first round saw Tafa utilize his range and technical kickboxing. The body was a major target.

In Round 2, the high-octane portion of the fight commenced. Felipe and Tafa exchanged big shots, though neither hit the canvas. A major punch from Felipe battered Tafa’s left eye, but somehow the Australian survived. As the clock wound down, the two heavyweights threw defense out the window and swung in a wild, crowd-pleasing exchange.

Round 3 played out much like Round 2, with both fighters going for the finish. With less than 30 seconds on the clock, the heavyweights slugged it out with reckless abandon.

With the win, Felipe extends his winning streak to two. As for Tafa, the loss is his second in three UFC appearances.
