Broken nose among injuries Calvin Kattar sustained in UFC on ABC 1 loss

Calvin Kattar definitely needed some patching up in the wake of his loss to Max Holloway at UFC on ABC 1.

ABU DHABI – [autotag]Calvin Kattar[/autotag] definitely needed some patching up in the wake of his loss to Max Holloway at UFC on ABC 1.

Kattar’s (22-5 MMA, 6-3 UFC) main event fight with former featherweight champion Holloway (22-6 MMA, 18-6 UFC) did not go according to plan on Saturday at Etihad Arena on Yas Island in Abu Dhabi. He was beaten up badly over the course of five rounds en route to a unanimous decision defeat, absorbing the most significant strikes of anyone in a single bout in UFC history.

UFC president Dana White said in the immediate aftermath of the headliner that he informed his staff to send Kattar to the hospital as soon as possible so his injuries could be examined.

Kattar’s manager and head coach, Tyson Chartier of the New England Cartel, told MMA Junkie on Sunday that the fighter sustained a broken nose in the fight and also required eight staples in the scalp to close the wounds Holloway opened up with his relentless offense.

The loss for Kattar snapped a two-fight winning streak for him. There’s no timeline on when he will be cleared to return to action, but it’s likely that a medical suspension is on the horizon for him.

Max Holloway showboated Muhammad Ali style during his UFC on ABC 1 masterpiece

“I’M THE BEST BOXER IN THE UFC!”

How dominant was [autotag]Max Holloway[/autotag] in his UFC on ABC 1 main event against [autotag]Calvin Kattar[/autotag]? Well, the scorecards of 50-43, 50-43, 50-42 in the former UFC featherweight champion’s favor paint   a pretty accurate picture.

And yet, somehow, that still doesn’t tell the entire story.

Holloway didn’t just dominate the fight, but he did so with the specific brand of fiery Hawaiian flare that has made him such a fan favorite over the years.

Nowhere was this more apparent than during the fifth round. Kattar, if nothing else, showed classic Boston toughness and obstinance in taking a vicious beating, staying on his feet, and coming back for more.

In the final two minutes, Holloway put on a memorable display, as he landed a two-punch combo, had words for the commentary team cageside, effortlessly dodged Kattar’s attempt to push forward and throw, then had some words for Kattar.

Come to think of it, perhaps this was an homage to Muhammad Ali. After all, this was the first UFC event on ABC, a network with a rich history of boxing coverage back in the day. And no one was bigger on ABC than Ali, a famed showboater who had many of his biggest bouts on the network.

Either way, some things you simply need to see for yourself to fully appreciate. So check out the video below (via Twitter):

UFC on ABC 1 results: Max Holloway pieces up tough Calvin Kattar for masterful win

Max Holloway put on an epic performance in earning a one-sided unanimous decision over an undeniably tough Calvin Kattar.

[autotag]Calvin Kattar [/autotag] went on a solid run to get himself into a position to headline a card on network television, but there are levels to this. And [autotag]Max Holloway[/autotag] is not only one of the best to ever do fight, he’s still in his prime.

Kattar (22-5 MMA, 6-3 UFC) found this out the hard way Saturday at UFC on ABC 1, as Holloway (22-6 MMA, 18-6 UFC), the former UFC featherweight champion, was in vintage form. The Hawaiian standout quite simply pieced up a super tough opponent for 25 minutes en route to a unanimous decision win with scores of 50-43, 50-43, and 50-42.

Holloway, for his part, offered to step in and fight if either Conor McGregor or Dustin Poirier have to drop out of their UFC 257 main event next weekend.

“All I gotta say is (there’s) a big, big fight next week, Dustin Poirier vs. Conor McGregor. And guess what? Your boy is staying all into the week,” Holloway said. “If anything happens, somebody drops off, Dana knows my number. He can hit me up.”

Holloway announced his intention from the start of the fight, as he spent the opening round initiating action. He landed combos of three and four punches at a time and kept Kattar guessing, as he varied these flurries from the head to the body and back.

By the second, the damage started to add up on Kattar, as Holloway started adding power to his precision and kept his foe on the run. It was a display of guts on Kattar’s part simply to get to the horn, as he covered up and withstood the onslaught.

Kattar has the type of power one must respect, and he landed a couple times in the third, particularly a big overhand right. That was enough to get Holloway’s attention, and Holloway still dominated the round and finished by artfully dodging a Kattar combo, causing him to swing at air.

The fourth was most noteworthy for the amount of damage Kattar was able to sustain and stay on his feet. Over and over, Holloway landed, unleashing the sort of flurries that have finished many opponents. Somehow, a wobbly Kattar stayed on his feet, and occasionally threw counter punches and elbows, which weren’t far off. He also withstood three kicks in the round’s closing seconds.

While one had to wonder whether Kattar’s corner, or referee Herb Dean, were going to wave off the bout, Kattar yet again hung in there and even landed a couple of his biggest punches of the fight. But Holloway was never seriously threatened, as he closed the deal on a sensational performance.

Kattar offered nothing but respect to his opponent afterwards.

“You gotta kill me to get me out of there. I ain’t gonna take a knee for anybody. Max Holloway is an animal. If you ain’t a Max Holloway fan, you’re a hater,” Kattar said. “Kid’s a beast, did what he had to do, and good luck to him. Hopefully he’s the champ next, because he deserves another shot.”

The featherweight bout was the UFC on ABC 1 main event at Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi. It aired on ABC and streamed on ESPN+ following prelims on ESPN+.

UFC on ABC 1 results: Carlos Condit outgrapples Matt Brown en route to unanimous win

Carlos Condit vs. Matt Brown finally went down at UFC on ABC 1, with “The Natural Born Killer” earning a win.

Seven years after their originally scheduled fight was supposed to take place, [autotag]Carlos Condit[/autotag] and [autotag]Matt Brown[/autotag] finally squared off.

After years of anticipation, Condit (32-13 MMA, 9-9 UFC) settled the debate and won via unanimous decision with scores of 30-27 across the boad.

The welterweight bout was the UFC on ABC 1 co-main event at Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi. It aired on ABC and streamed on ESPN+ following prelims on ESPN+.

Despite largely being known for their striking abilities, Condit and Brown (22-18 MMA, 15-12 UFC) both looked to drag the fight to the ground. Brown was first to shoot in Round 1. Covered in blood from scraping his head on the cage, Brown controlled the fight until Condit hit him with a switch.

In Round 2, both welterweights opened up their striking. Brown landed a nasty elbow. Condit responded with a thunderous body kick. Condit seemed like the fresher fighter and fended off Brown’s takedowns. A slick sidestepping sweep from Condit mustered Brown to the mat.

In the final round, Condit found success in his takedowns again. Brown had his moments, but they weren’t enough. Condit swept the scorecards when the fight went to the decision.

Brown and Condit have long been linked due to their similar, fan friendly fighting style and duration with the promotion. The longtime UFC welterweights had been matched up twice prior to Saturday’s fight – once in December 2013 and once in April 2018. However, both previous pairings fell through.

With the win, Condit is on his first winning streak since 2012. Following a string of five-straight losses, Condit defeated Court McGee by unanimous decision in October. That victory was his first since May 2015.

For Brown, the loss is his second in a row. Since July 2014, Brown has gone 3-7 with four stoppage losses in that stretch. Prior to UFC on ABC 1, Brown hinted at the possibility the fight vs. Condit could be his last.
