Dan Hardy: UFC staged video showing Dana White concern for Calvin Kattar in Max Holloway loss

Dan Hardy says the UFC staged the video in which Dana White was seen worried about Calvin Kattar in his loss to Max Holloway.

[autotag]Dan Hardy[/autotag] has opened up about some of the situations that disappointed him while working for the UFC as a commentator.

Hardy, who was also a former UFC welterweight title challenger, had conflicted feelings during his final days as an employee for the promotion. Hardy was released from his duties as commentator in early 2021 following a reported disagreement with a female employee during the promotion’s run of events in Abu Dhabi that same year.

In a recent interview with the “Freedom Pact” podcast, Hardy said he “certainly could’ve acted differently” in dealing with the circumstance, but it doesn’t change the uneasy feelings he has toward the promotion.

In one of the examples Hardy listed, he claimed the UFC and president [autotag]Dana White[/autotag] staged a video in which White was shown expressing concern that Calvin Kattar could’ve died as a result of damage in his loss against Max Holloway in January 2021.

“This is another good example of the nonsense, the posturing, the propaganda – that last fight that I called was Max Holloway vs. Calvin Kattar,” Hardy said. “… (It was) the first time combat sports had been on ABC in 20-something years.

“And then going into the fifth round, and you have one guy that’s being beaten senseless by another fighter, right? Now, there is no reason why that fight shouldn’t have been stopped at the end of the fourth round. No discredit to Calvin Kattar, but he didn’t earn anything by taking that fifth-round beating. But what we did see was that clip coming out of Dana talking to Hunter (Campbell) and being like, ‘Hey, we need to make sure he goes straight to a doctor after that.’

“And it looks like, ‘Hey, they just caught this on camera across the arena.’ The dude was mic’d up. The receiver of the microphone was attached to the camera that was filming him from across the other side of the arena. That whole thing was staged to protect the UFC. And I watched that, and I’m like, ‘That’s just dirty.’ Actually do something to protect the fighter. Don’t do something to protect the sport or the company if the fighter gets damaged.”

A few months prior to the Holloway vs. Kattar fight, Hardy was in a confrontation with referee Herb Dean for not stopping the Francisco Trinaldo vs. Jai Herbert lightweight fight sooner – which White was critical of and said Hardy was out of place to confront the referee.

Hardy said he thought the situation in the Holloway vs. Kattar fight didn’t prioritize fighter health and safety, but rather the UFC’s public image.

“That hurt me to watch that, because I can see the game being played,” Hardy said. “It’s pretending they had some kind of concern by Calvin Kattar, and I just didn’t buy it. And I’m standing there keeping my mouth shut, because I had already said too much a few weeks before, and I’m already right on the edge of the chopping block thinking, ‘This might be exactly what I was talking about before a couple of weeks ago.’

“Like, why someone didn’t get involved and stop that fight when it needed to be stopped? Calvin Kattar is not the same fighter he was after that fight. It’s horrible to say, but I’ve seen it before. I’ve seen fighters take one or two or three more shots than they absolutely needed to, and they’ve never been the same again.”

Since the loss to Holloway, Kattar has gone 1-1 with a unanimous decision win over Giga Chikadze and a split decision loss to Josh Emmett. He returns next Saturday to heading UFC Fight Night 213 against Arnold Allen.

Conor McGregor responds to Max Holloway, says UFC rematch ‘definitely in the pipeline’

Conor McGregor is down to rematch Max Holloway in the future.

[autotag]Conor McGregor[/autotag] is down to rematch [autotag]Max Holloway[/autotag] in the future.

Holloway (22-6 MMA, 18-6 UFC) said both before and after his all-time performance against Calvin Kattar at UFC on ABC 1 this past weekend that he was highly interested in running it back with “The Notorious.” His record output in the fight caught McGregor’s (22-4 MMA, 10-2 UFC) attention, and the former two-division champ expressed interest in the bout.

“I thought it was a solid performance,” McGregor told The Mac Life. “He fought an up-and-comer, he done well. I was actually doing an interview and he skateboarded by the window. I was like, ‘Is that Max Holloway?’ He’s obviously hanging around and fair play to him. He’s definitely in the pipeline for a bout against me. I would happily rematch Max, and after a performance like, he’s put himself right up there.”

McGregor, who rematches Dustin Poirier in the main event of UFC 257 on Saturday in Abu Dhabi, said a said encounter with Holloway would have different circumstances than the first fight, which took place in August 2013 and he won by unanimous decision. That fight took place in the featherweight division, but McGregor said this one would have to be at lightweight.

“He’s a tall lad,” McGregor said. “He’s taller than me, so he could build up. He’s only fought at 155 once. It was against Dustin. He was a bit out-powered, but he could certainly do it. Against other lightweights? You never know. But the rematch would be 155, for sure.”

Holloway said in the midst of his fight against Kattar that he was the best boxer in the UFC. McGregor, who has professional boxing experience in the form of a fight against Floyd Mayweather, found that notion to be rather comical, and said he’ll show why at UFC 257.

“He’s not the best boxer,” McGregor said. “It’s no question, and I’ll prove that on Sunday morning. Let’s see what he says Sunday morning.”

Coach lauds Calvin Kattar’s toughness, sees no need to explain not stopping Max Holloway fight

New England Cartel coach Tyson Chartier is proud of Calvin Kattar and firmly believes he did right by him.

New England Cartel coach Tyson Chartier has no doubt that [autotag]Calvin Kattar[/autotag] will bounce back stronger.

Kattar (22-5 MMA, 6-3 UFC), who was outclassed in a unanimous decision loss to former featherweight champion Max Holloway in the UFC on ABC 1 main event, endured plenty of damage but never stopped fighting.

Kattar received eight staples in his head, as well as suffered broken nose, but continued to fire back until the final horn. Many thought the fight could have been stopped sooner, but Chartier doesn’t regret letting it go to the end.

“It didn’t go our way Saturday night. But the world got to see what I’ve known for years, that this man will take a knee for nobody. He went five rounds with the best version of the featherweight goat that I’ve ever seen. He finished the 25th minute swinging and did it with a smile. To say I’m proud would be an understatement. I love this kid, I love these coaches, I love this team. Now it’s time to rest, heal, make some adjustments, and then come back better.

“To the critics who want to know why I didn’t stop the fight myself, I owe you no explanation. Unless you’ve sat in this seat you wouldn’t even understand it if I did. I will get back to Boston Friday and give Cals mother a hug and look her in the eyes and know with confidence that I did what was best for her son.

“There are levels to this game and we just felt the highest. Now we have to figure out how to get there.”

Prior to the Holloway loss, Kattar had scored a knockout of Jeremy Stephens at UFC 249 in May, followed by a unanimous decision win over Dan Ige in July.

UFC on ABC 1 took place Saturday at Etihad Arena on Yas Island, Abu Dhabi. The main card simulcasted on ABC and ESPN+ after prelims on ESPN/ESPN+.

Calvin Kattar releases statement after UFC on ABC 1 loss, promises not to quit

Calvin Kattar has issued a statement after absorbing a record-breaking amount of significant strikes on Saturday.

[autotag]Calvin Kattar[/autotag] absorbed a tremendous amount of punishment when he stepped into the cage against Max Holloway in the UFC on ABC 1 main event Saturday.

Monday, less than 48 hours after his unanimous decision loss to Holloway (22-6 MMA, 18-6 UFC), Kattar released a statement on the defeat on his Instagram page.

“Success in life comes when you simply refuse to give up,” Kattar wrote. With goals so strong that obstacles, failure and loss only act as motivation. Props to Max on a hell of a fight he deserves all the praise. Thankful for my team’s commitment for this fight. On to the next. There is no stopping the man who doesn’t quit.”

Despite absorbing a UFC record-breaking 445 significant strikes, Kattar (22-5 MMA, 6-3 UFC) refused to quit – the attitude he aims to carry going forward.

Kattar, 32, suffered a broken nose in his losing effort. In an exchange with MMA Junkie on Sunday, his manager and coach Tyson Chartier, Kattar also received eight staples in his head. One half of the UFC’s New England Cartel tandem, Kattar has never been finished in his UFC tenure.

Alexander Volkanovski warns Max Holloway on potential trilogy: ‘You ain’t pulling those numbers when I’m in front of you’

Alexander Volkanovski applauds Max Holloway for his clinical win this past Saturday, but doubts he racks those statistics against him.

UFC featherweight champion [autotag]Alexander Volkanovski[/autotag] applauds [autotag]Max Holloway[/autotag] for his clinical performance this past Saturday but “Blessed” would racks similar statistics against him if they were to fight a third time.

Holloway (22-6 MMA, 18-6 UFC), who snapped a two-fight losing skid with a masterclass over Calvin Kattar in the UFC on ABC 1 main event, broke all kinds of promotional records in the striking department on the night. The former featherweight champion earned a dominant unanimous decision win with scores of 50-43, 50-43 and 50-42.

While Volkanovski (22-1 MMA, 9-0 UFC) was impressed by Holloway’s performance, the current UFC featherweight champ made sure to remind him of the two previous times that he beat him, where he outstruck him overall in both fights.

Good fight @BlessedMMA but you ain’t pulling those numbers when I’m in front of you!!”

Having already lost to Volkanovski twice – one being a controversial decision at this past July’s UFC 251, a trilogy has been a hard sell for Holloway. But with such an impressive performance over Kattar, the former champion may have repositioned himself into title contention once again.

Volkanovski is slated to defend his title against Brian Ortega on March 27, and with Holloway having history with both men, his eyes will certainly be peeled.

UFC on ABC 1 post-event facts: Max Holloway’s masterclass shatters all striking records

Check out all the facts and figures from UFC on ABC 1, which saw Max Holloway beat Calvin Kattar in Abu Dhabi.

The UFC kicked off its 2021 campaign on Saturday with a monumental event. UFC on ABC 1 marked the promotion’s return to network television, with the card unfolding at Etihad Arena on Yas Island in Abu Dhabi.

A performance worthy of the grand stage unfolded in the main event. Former UFC champ [autotag]Max Holloway[/autotag] (22-6 MMA, 18-6 UFC) snapped his two-fight losing with one of the greatest performances in UFC history. “Blessed” delivered record-setting output against [autotag]Calvin Kattar[/autotag] (22-5 MMA, 6-3 UFC) to take a unanimous decision in one of the most lopsided bouts to ever occur inside the octagon.

Matt Brown rips ‘ridiculous’ scoring in decision loss to Carlos Condit at UFC on ABC 1

Matt Brown didn’t think the judges got it right in his decision loss at UFC on ABC 1.

[autotag]Matt Brown[/autotag] didn’t like the way his fight was scored Saturday.

The longtime UFC fighter thought he did enough to outpoint Carlos Condit in the UFC on ABC 1 co-main event in Abu Dhabi. Brown (22-18 MMA, 15-12 UFC) lost a unanimous decision to Condit with 30-27 scores on all three judges’ scorecards.

Brown said he thought it was a close fight and at the very least thinks the scoring should’ve reflected that, even if the end result would’ve been the same.

“30-27 is ridiculous,” Brown wrote on Twitter. “I won the first round 100% he won the second for sure and the third is really close but I ended on top. Should have got the decision imo (in my opinion) but if he got it based on just the third round I wouldn’t be mad. (explicit) judges.

“Thanks for all the love and support (and the occasional hate) I’m still getting better and stronger every day and I will learn and grow from this! Hope you all enjoyed the show!”

[lawrence-related id=581098,580613]

Brown did have a good first round and managed to stay on top for a good portion of the round while landing ground and pound on Condit.

The 40-year-old competitor is now on a two-fight losing skid after a two-fight winning streak.
