UFC Fight Night 206 video: Joseph Holmes drops opponent with knee, sinks in choke for first-round finish

Joseph Holmes picked up his first UFC win in style.

[autotag]Joseph Holmes[/autotag]’s first UFC win was a memorable one.

The middleweight fighter scored his first promotional victory at Saturday’s UFC Fight Night 206 in Las Vegas. Holmes (8-2 MMA, 1-1 UFC) submitted Alen Amedovski with a rear-naked choke in the first round of their contest to close out the preliminary card. The official stoppage was at the 1:04 mark

It was a quick night for Holmes. He drove a strong knee right down the middle to connect on Amedovski’s chin and drop him to the canvas. From there, Holmes pounced and was able to sink in a rear-naked choke to get the tap.

Holmes was coming off a unanimous decision loss to Jamie Pickett back in January. That defeat marked his first fight with the UFC. Prior to the defeat, Holmes was on a seven-fight winning streak.

UFC Fight Night 206 results: Jailton Almeida dominates at heavyweight, taps Parker Porter in first

Jailton Almeida wasted little time getting the job done in his first UFC heavyweight bout.

LAS VEGAS – [autotag]Jailton Almeida[/autotag] now has wins in two divisions under the UFC banner.

The Brazilian followed up his UFC debut win at light heavyweight with a victory in the heavyweight division, and did so in an impressive fashion. On the prelims of UFC Fight Night 206, Almeida (16-2 MMA, 2-0 UFC) took on Parker Porter, taking the fight to his opponent from the moment the fight started.

Just seconds into the fight, Almeida was already in on Porter’s hips and a moment later slammed him to the canvas. Without rushing the process, Almeida maintained top control while landing strikes from the top, until eventually finding the opportunity to lock in a rear-naked choke to force Porter (13-7 MMA, 3-2 UFC) to tap out.

Check out video of the finish below (via Twitter):

Almeida improves to 2-0 under the UFC banner, looking like a fighter who can hold his own in either the light heavyweight or heavyweight divisions. Both of his fights did not make it out of the first round, as his debut against Danilo Marques was a TKO finish in the opening frame.

On the other side, Porter’s three-fight win streak comes to an end on Saturday. He entered the fight against Almeida with consecutive unanimous decision wins over Josh Parisian, Chase Sherman, and Alan Baudot.

Up-to-the-minute results of UFC Fight Night 206 include:

  • Jailton Almeida def. Parker Porter via submission (rear-naked choke) – Round 1, 4:35
  • Uros Medic def. Omar Morales via TKO (punches) – Round 2, 3:05
  • Jonathan Martinez def. Vince Morales via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27)

[autotag]Chase Hooper[/autotag]’s MMA return was successful.

The 22-year-old featherweight prospect competed in his first fight in almost a year Saturday at UFC Fight Night 206 in Las Vegas. Hooper (11-2-1 MMA, 3-2 UFC) took on Brazil’s Felipe Colares on the prelims bounced back from defeat by stopping Colares with ground-and-pound in the third round. The victory marked Hooper’s third win and finish in the UFC since joining the promotion in December 2019.

As promised, Hooper put on a grappling clinic. He swarmed Colares on the ground with constant attacks and submission threats. Colares was able to escape many tough positions and even get dominant positions himself, but Hooper managed to win most of the exchanges thanks to his smooth transitions.

In the final round, Hooper got mount on Colares and began to drop elbows until the referee waived the action. This was Hooper’s first fight since losing to Steven Peterson at UFC 263 back in June 2021.

UFC Fight Night 206 video: Holly Holm, Ketlen Vieira resist breaking off staredown

Holly Holm and Ketlen Vieira came face-to-face for the first time ahead of UFC Fight Night 206 following weigh-ins.

LAS VEGAS – [autotag]Holly Holm[/autotag] and [autotag]Ketlen Vieira[/autotag] came face-to-face for the first time ahead of the UFC Fight Night 206 main event following Friday’s weigh-ins.

Holm (14-5 MMA, 7-5 UFC) and Vieira (12-2 MMA, 6-2 UFC) are set for a five-round matchup of contenders in the women’s bantamweight division on Saturday, and as is tradition, they engaged in a staredown where neither fighter wanted to be the first to look away before stepping into the octagon.

Both fighters were respectful as they locked eyes in under the supervision of UFC matchmaker Sean Shelby, but the intensity was evident as Holm, No. 4 in the latest USA TODAY Sports/MMA Junkie women’s bantamweight rankings, looks to defend her position against No. 9-ranked Vieira.

UFC Fight Night 206 video: Holly Holm, Ketlen Vieira make weight for main event

Holly Holm’s return from a 19-month layoff is official after she and Ketlen Vieira made weight for UFC Fight Night 206.

LAS VEGAS – [autotag]Holly Holm[/autotag]’s return to the octagon from a 19-month layoff is official. The former UFC women’s bantamweight champion and opponent [autotag]Ketlen Vieira[/autotag] have weight for the UFC Fight Night 206 headliner.

Holm (14-5 MMA, 7-5 UFC) and Vieira (12-2 MMA, 6-2 UFC) are slated for a crucial divisional contender matchup on Saturday at the UFC Apex. The main event bout, along with the rest of the card, streams on ESPN+.

Both fighters stepped on the scale during Friday’s official weigh-in window, with Holm registering at 135.5 pounds, and Vieira clocking in at 136 pounds. Now the five-round fight can proceed as planned.

Holm, No. 4 in the latest USA TODAY Sports/MMA Junkie women’s bantamweight rankings, hasn’t seen action since a unanimous decision win over Irene Aldana at UFC on ESPN 16 in October 2020. She’s been on the sidelines with injuries and health issues, and is now set to return and compete for the first time since turning 40.

No. 9-ranked Vieira will attempt to derail Holm’s comeback in defeat a former UFC champion for the second consecutive fight. The 30-year-old Brazilian is coming off a unanimous decision win over Miesha Tate at UFC Fight Night 198 in November.

Watch the video above to see Holm and Vieira weigh in for the UFC Fight Night 206 headliner.
