Video: Johnny Walker, Jamahal Hill make weight for UFC Fight Night 201 main event

Johnny Walker and Jamahal Hill made their UFC Fight Night 201 main event official at weigh-ins.

LAS VEGAS – The UFC Fight Night 201 headliner is official after [autotag]Johnny Walker[/autotag] and [autotag]Jamahal Hill[/autotag] made weight.

Walker (18-6 MMA, 4-3 UFC) and Hill (9-1 MMA, 3-1 UFC) hit their marks for their five-round headliner, which takes place Saturday at the UFC Apex and streams on ESPN+.

During Friday’s weigh-in session, Walker was first to the scale and registered at 206 pounds. Hill came in less than 30 minutes later, hitting the divisional championship weight of 205 pounds. He also did a shoey afterward.

Now the stage is set for the key divisional matchup where both men will seek their first main event win.

Jamahal Hill rehydrated with a shoey after making weight for UFC Fight Night 201

Now look what you’ve done, Tai Tuivasa.

Now look what you’ve done, Tai Tuivasa.

On Friday, [autotag]Jamahal Hill[/autotag] stepped on the scale and weighed in at 205 pounds for his light heavyweight main event vs. Johnny Walker at UFC Fight Night 201. Afterward, Hill had that look on his face like he was about to do something – and then he did it.

Hill stepped off the scale, was handed a shoe and a bottle of BODYARMOR by somebody, and then proceeded to do (you guessed it) a shoey. Watch in the video above.

A traditional shoey, of course, is chugging beer out of someone’s worn, stinky ass shoe. We’re not sure if using a sports drink and a fresh-out-of-the-box shoe qualifies, but who are we to say differently?

Curious to know what Tuivasa thinks of this.

Johnny Walker says he’s learned enough lessons, now it’s time to win

Training under a coach whose mantra has long been “win or learn,” Johnny Walker says he’s had enough lessons as of late.

LAS VEGAS – Training under a coach whose mantra has long been “win or learn,” [autotag]Johnny Walker[/autotag] says he’s had enough lessons as of late.

Walker fought most recently in October, suffering a decision loss in his first UFC headliner, coming up short against Thiago “Marreta” Santos. Still, he said going 25 minutes with his fellow countryman proved valuable.

“Every fight, you don’t lose – you win or learn, right?” Walker asked at Wednesday’s media day at the UFC Apex. “I learned a lot. It was a good experience. I fought five rounds. I felt five rounds, and now I understand more of my body. I know I can push. I know what I can do.

“I was not really happy with the result, but I’m happy with the experience, you know, and it’s good.”

Walker was relatively flat in the later rounds of his recent loss, leading to some speculation that his relocation to SBG Ireland might have changed his fighting style, which was previously known as one of the flashiest in the game. But Walker explained that wasn’t the case.

“The gameplan was good,” Walker said. “I was doing good, but I didn’t tell my coach, John Kavanagh, that I broke my foot in the third round. Because I kicked, then it broke, then I kicked again, and I can’t kick anymore. Then I forgot to tell him, and he thought, I wanted to keep doing what I was doing because probably I was going to win by points, but I couldn’t kick anymore. I couldn’t move much more.

“But no, he didn’t ask me to change my style. They just want me to improve myself, and they asked me to be myself more and be more unpredictable and go more forward but safe. I’m improving my game every day – chin down, all my defense, takedown defense, everything, so it’s all good.”

Walker (18-6 MMA, 4-3 UFC) gets another shot in a headlining role at Saturday’s UFC Fight Night 201, which streams live on ESPN+ from the UFC Apex. There, he’ll take on another highly-touted prospect in Jamahal Hill (9-1 MMA, 3-1 UFC).

“Sweet Dreams” is a little earlier in his UFC run than Walker, but the Brazilian points out he’s actually the younger man, even though he boasts the experience edge.

“I’m younger than him,” Walker said. “I’m the veteran with experience, but I’m 29, and he’s 30, and yeah, it’s a good match. I like his style, and it’s going to be fun.”

While Hill did recently suffer his first professional loss, he also rebounded with a spectacular knockout in his most recent outing and seems to have more buzz around him at the moment than Walker, who has certainly shown great abilities but also has suffered a few setbacks as of late. But Walker isn’t overly concerned with anything specific in Hill’s game.

“Everybody in the top 10 has knockout power, has knowledge enough to hurt you, to knock you out, so he’s a good fighter,” Walker said. “I just have to get ready and have fun.”

Having fun generally isn’t an issue for Walker, whose trademark style includes plenty of singing and dancing and smiling along with a rather unpredictable variety of attacks in the cage.

But Walker knows it takes positive results to stay at the highest level of the sport, and he’s ready to have his hand raised on Saturday night.

“I learned so much,” Walker said. “I’m going to win.”

Jamahal Hill says to keep doubting him at your own risk: ‘Worry about everybody else’

Make no mistake about it, Jamahal Hill heard the doubters – and he’s ready to prove them wrong again at UFC Fight Night 201.

LAS VEGAS – Make no mistake about it, [autotag]Jamahal Hill[/autotag] heard the doubters.

A highly-touted prospect, Hill saw his undefeated record vanish, courtesy of Paul Craig at UFC 263 this past June. When he returned to the cage six months later, he was considered an underdog against Australian light heavyweight Jimmy Crute.

“Hell yeah, there was no question – wasn’t no think, there was doubt,” Hill told MMA Junkie at Wednesday’s media day at the UFC Apex. “Absolutely nobody had me winning my next fight. Everybody was against me. They couldn’t see me doing anything.”

Hill silenced the naysayers in rapid fashion, needing just 48 seconds to score a devastating knockout and a Performance of the Night bonus.

“That was big,” Hill said. “It was nice to reassure myself that you just had a slip, and that’s all it was. Just keep doing what you’re doing.”

Just two months later, Hill (9-1 MMA, 3-1 UFC) is back in the cage with another big test in front of him. “Sweet Dreams” faces Brazilian wildman Johnny Walker (18-6 MMA, 4-3 UFC) at Saturday’s UFC Fight Night 201, which streams live on ESPN+. With the night’s original headliner pushed back a month, Hill vs. Walker now serves as the card’s main event.

Hill said he’s appreciative of the honor but isn’t looking at the fight any differently.

“It’s just the acknowledgment of the spotlight is a little brighter,” Hill said. “It’s the main event spot, so you’re expected to deliver, but other than that, I always deliver, I feel like, so no, it doesn’t feel any different. I just approach it like I always do.”

This time around, Hill is the one expected to get his hand raised according to the oddsmakers, but he’s not minimizing the challenge that lies ahead, even with Walker mired in a 1-3 stretch. Hill just thinks he’s ready to meet that challenge head on.

“He’s a talented dude,” Hill said. “He’s still young, and I mean he’s still got time to grow, still got time to experience things. He’s got a crazy-ass personality, mindset and things, so I mean he just has fun. Those are dangerous people. You know, I’ve just got to come in and do me, lock in like I know I can and show my skills, and I think my skills are just levels above.”

With a win, Hill will likely again garner much attention for what he might be able to accomplish in his career. But Hill says he’s not all that concerned with what others think of his skills. After all, it wasn’t that long ago he heard the rumblings of those who thought he was being overhyped.

“Even now, people still like, it’s crazy – it’s a weird thing on how people view fighters and their skills and what their capabilities are,” Hill said. “If Steph Curry shot 0-for-10 from 3-point, you going be like, ‘Oh, he shouldn’t shoot. Whenever he shoots, he shouldn’t shoot.’ Just because you slip up or you have a bad performance in certain areas doesn’t mean you can’t do things.”

So, doubt Hill at your own risk moving forward. Sure, the undefeated record is gone, but he believes great things await – and if you want to label him an underdog again, well, he’s OK with that, too.

“Y’all remember when I first got here, everybody was like, Oh, is you in the doghouse? You with the big dogs,’ and all of that?” Hill asked. “The simple fact of everybody keeps doubting me, it’s crazy. I was thinking about that the other day like, ‘Oh, you’re in the doghouse.’ People kept saying that to me, right? I look at myself as a lion.

“If you was looking at yourself and you’re a lion, and everybody’s telling you you’re in the dog house – if you looked out in your backyard and you see your dog out there with a lion, who you worried about? You worried about your dog or you worried about the lion? Worry about everybody else. Worry about these little dogs.”
