Joanne Wood has ‘no excuses’ for UFC Fight Night 198 loss, praises ‘beast’ Taila Santos

Joanne Wood was all class in the wake of a difficult setback at UFC Fight Night 198.

[autotag]Joanne Wood[/autotag] was all class in the wake of a difficult setback at UFC Fight Night 198.

Wood (15-7 MMA, 7-7 UFC) suffered a first-round submission loss to Taila Santos (19-1 MMA, 4-1 UFC) in an important women’s flyweight matchup on Saturday at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas.

The result dropped Wood’s UFC record to .500, and marked the fourth time in her octagon tenure that she’s been submitted inside Round 1.

Those facts aren’t a deterrent to Wood, though. She said she takes full responsibility for the outcome of the fight, and although she plans to take her lumps for not producing the win, said it’s not going to hold her down from pushing forward.

Felt great tonight and I had a great camp no excuses I just got caught..congratulations to my opponent santos she is a beast! 🇧🇷 ..This is an unforgiving sport even when you do everything right and everything in your power to be the best prepared you can be it can still just not be good enough. Hard pill to swallow but l love it and I ain’t giving up! ❤️🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Wood was unable to get much going in the bout with Santos. She landed a couple good strikes early on, but then her Brazilian foe showed off the power by scoring a pair of knockdowns. Wood wouldn’t get up from the second one, as Santos swarmed her and finished the fight with a rear-naked choke.

UFC Fight Night 198 post-event facts: Rare 0-5 UFC record enters history books

Check out all the facts and figures from UFC Fight Night 198, which saw a near-record 10 fights end in a decision.

UFC Fight Night 198 took place Saturday at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas, and with 10 decision results, it turned out to be one of the more forgettable events of the year.

It won’t be remembered that way for [autotag]Ketlen Vieira[/autotag] (12-2 MMA, 6-2 UFC), though, as she put a signature win on her resume when she outworked [autotag]Miesha Tate[/autotag] (19-8 MMA, 6-5 UFC) to a unanimous decision in the women’s bantamweight headliner.

UFC Fight Night 198 bonuses: Adrian Yanez, Davey Grant’s intense battle among just three total winners

The promotion handed out one less bonus than usual at UFC Fight Night 198 in Las Vegas.

UFC Fight Night 198 was a night filled with fights that went the distance.

After a six-fight, all-decision preliminary card, [autotag]Adrian Yanez[/autotag] vs. [autotag]Davey Grant[/autotag] stood out far above the rest in the seventh of ten decisions on Saturday. The bantamweights left a lasting impression as they turned in an incredible 15 minutes of high-paced, hard-striking action. Rightfully so, they walked away with the Fight of the Night bonus.

Straying away from the norm, the promotion only rewarded three total fighters, one short of the usual four rewards for impressive performances.

UFC Fight Night 198 results: Ketlen Vieira’s crisp striking leads to hard-fought unanimous decision over Miesha Tate

Ketlen Vieira proved too much for Miesha Tate on Saturday evening at UFC Fight Night 198.

[autotag]Ketlen Vieira[/autotag] picked up a huge win over a former champion on Saturday.

The 30-year-old bantamweight contender turned away Miesha Tate after a hard-fought five rounds. Vieira (12-2 MMA, 6-2 UFC) was quick to the punch and largely kept the fight on her terms, creating problems for Tate (19-8 MMA, 6-5 UFC) en route to a unanimous decision victory, with scores of 48-47, 48-47, and 49-46.

The women’s bantamweight bout was the UFC Fight Night 198 main event at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas. It streamed on ESPN+.

After a touch of gloves, the fighters began trying to find the range. Vieira let her hands fly first, stinging with a sharp combination to get Tate’s attention early. The former champ was calculated in her approach as she searched for an opening, and found home for a few punches late in the round. Vieira would shoot for a takedown, but Tate countered and ended the close opening frame in top position.

Striking exchanges were frequent early in the second round. Both fighters landed clean strikes, but Vieira’s left jab set the tone. Tate charged forward and unleashed a flurry of strikes in the center of the cage, but Vieira answered back as she worked returned to working behind the jab to close out the round.

Tate continued her approach in the third, trying to work around the long jab of Vieira. After a brief pause due to an accidental eye poke from Tate, the striking exchanges continued with Vieira’s reach creating problems for Tate. In the closing moments of the round, Tate tried to switch things up by initiating clinches and ended the round landing knees to the body.

Turning up the pressure to start the fourth, Tate went first with strikes and completed a takedown. Vieira got back to her feet quickly, but Tate maintained a clinch along the fence. After breaking free, Tate was able to grab a thai clinch, but Vieira got the best of it by landing a series of punches to the body before separating. The Brazilian fired off punches first until the round concluded.

The final round began with a fast pacer pace than the previous rounds. Tate was first to strike, but Vieira countered well, causing the blood to flow from the former champ’s nose. Tate looked to land hard right hands, but Vieira would return fire with precise counter punches. Vieira kept Tate at range by popping out the left jab as they circled around the cage until the fight concluded.

Vieira returns to the win column with a big victory over Tate. She has now traded wins and losses in each outing since 2018, after entering the UFC undefeated and winning her first four bouts with the promotion. Saturday’s impressive win over Tate should go a long way as she continues to navigate her way towards a title shot.

After stepping out of retirement in July with incredible results, Tate suffers a setback in her goal of a second title run. In her TKO win over Marion Reneau at UFC on ESPN 26, Tate looked completely rejuvenated as a fighter. On Saturday, however, Vieira was just a step ahead of the former champ.

UFC Fight Night 198 results: Sean Brady edges Michael Chiesa in a decision, remains undefeated

Sean Brady outpoints Michael Chiesa in a unanimous decision to remain undefeated at UFC Fight Night 198.

[autotag]Sean Brady[/autotag]’s MMA record remains flawless even after taking on one of the best fighters at welterweight.

The 28-year-old rising contender defeated veteran [autotag]Michael Chiesa[/autotag] in a unanimous decision at Saturday’s UFC Fight Night 198. Brady (15-0 MMA, 5-0 UFC) outpointed Chiesa (17-6 MMA, 11-6 UFC), wining 29-28 across all three judges’ scorecards.

The welterweight bout was the UFC Fight Night 198 co-main event at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas. It streamed on ESPN+.

It was a closely contested bout, that forced Brady to dig deep for the victory.

In the first round, Brady was eye poked twice within the first minute of the fight. Referee Herb Dean didn’t take a point from the two illegal pokes. Once action resumed, Brady immediately got a takedown and controlled the fight for a good portion of the round. Chiesa was able to get back up but had little time to work with.

In the second, Chiesa had a lot of success striking at range. He landed several hard combinations on Brady throughout the first half of the round. With two minutes left, Brady landed a takedown and took Chiesa’s back. He controlled Chiesa until the final bell.

The third round had Chiesa score the most significant moment of the fight. Chiesa hurt Brady with a combination and had him on his back foot on survival mode. Chiesa pressured and did all he could to finish Brady, but Brady was able to get the fight to the ground. Chiesa once again got back to his feet and hurt Brady. He finished the fight in mount, landing ground-and-pound as the final horn sounded.

With the win, Brady remains unbeaten in his MMA career. He’s 4-0 since joining the UFC in 2019. Brady had no names to call out following his big win, but did request for a main event slot for his next outing.

Meanwhile, Chiesa was coming off a first-round submission loss to Vicente Luque back in August. The defeat snapped a four-fight winning streak, which marked his return to the welterweight division.

UFC Fight Night 198 results: Taila Santos dominates Joanne Wood, scores first-round submission

Taila Santos improves her winning streak to four in a row, besting Joanne Wood at UFC Fight Night 198.

[autotag]Taila Santos[/autotag] is making big statements at 125 pounds.

The Brazilian picked up a big win, running through veteran [autotag]Joanne Wood[/autotag] at Saturday’s UFC Fight Night 198. Santos (19-1 MMA, 4-1 UFC) submitted Wood (15-7 MMA, 7-7 UFC) with a rear-naked choke at the 4:49 mark of Round 1.

The women’s flyweight bout was part of the UFC Fight Night 198 main card at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas. It streamed on ESPN+.

It was a dominant showing by Santos.

The 28-year-old pressured Wood from the very beginning. After a feeling out process, Santos began connecting with the right hand. She dropped Wood with a straight right, but Wood was able to get back on her feet quickly. A second right hand followed, dropping Wood again.

From there, the Brazilian jumped on Wood, got her back, and began to work for the submission. Shortly after, Santos sank in a rear-naked choke, forcing Wood to tap out.

[lawrence-related id=1739845]

Santos was coming off three consecutive wins, as she bested Molly McCann, Gillian Robertson, and Roxanne Modafferi in unanimous decision wins. The Brazilian is now on a four-fight winning streak. Santos has only lost once in her professional MMA career, coming up short against Mara Romero Borella in a split decision back in 2019.

Meanwhile, Wood was coming off a split-decision loss to former UFC title challenger Lauren Murphy back in June. She now finds herself on a two-fight losing streak. Wood is 2-4 in her past six trips to the octagon.
