UFC Fight Night 196 video: Marvin Vettori flips off, cusses out Paulo Costa in heated faceoff

Paulo Costa and Marvin Vettori had their first in-person encounter at UFC Fight Night 196 faceoffs and it was predictably heated.

LAS VEGAS – [autotag]Paulo Costa[/autotag] and [autotag]Marvin Vettori[/autotag] came face-to-face for the first time ahead of UFC Fight Night 196. And to no one’s surprise, things got a bit heated.

After both men hit the revised light heavyweight limit at Friday morning’s official weigh-ins, Costa (13-1 MMA, 5-1 UFC) and Vettori (17-5-1 MMA, 7-3-1 UFC) had their first in-person encounter in the form of a staredown for the cameras.

Given the wild nature of fight week, which saw the bout shifted from middleweight to a 195-pound catchweight to light heavyweight, it was no surprise there was a lot to say between Costa and Vettori when they finally got in front of each other.

Vettori was rightfully upset at Costa. He gave him double middle fingers once he saw him, then launched multiple curse words in the direction of his upcoming opponent until the pair were separated.

LAS VEGAS – [autotag]Paulo Costa[/autotag] vs. [autotag]Marvin Vettori[/autotag] is finally official after multiple weight class changes ahead of UFC Fight Night 196.

Fight week began with Costa (13-1 MMA, 5-1 UFC) vs. Vettori (17-5-1 MMA, 7-3-1 UFC) scheduled as a middleweight contest. It was then moved to a 195-pound catchweight due to Costa’s poor weight management, then just hours prior to weigh-ins, was shifted again to light heavyweight.

Both men stepped on the scale Friday morning at UFC Fight Night 196 weigh-ins, and were able to hit the revised weight. Costa came to weigh-ins six minutes into the two-hour window, registering at 204.5 pounds. Vettori, meanwhile, came in later, 94 minutes into the session, and was 204.

‘Rumble’ Johnson rips Paulo Costa’s UFC weight cut disaster: ‘Even I didn’t make up excuses’

Anthony Johnson had harsh words for Paulo Costa’s disastrous weight management ahead of UFC Fight Night 196.

When [autotag]Anthony Johnson[/autotag] of all people has something negative to say about a fighter’s weight cut, it’s likely the sign of a problem.

Johnson (23-6 MMA, 1-0 BMMA), a current Bellator fighter, is perhaps one of the most infamous names in MMA history when it comes to botched weight cuts. His repeatedly failures to make the contracted weight ultimately led to a release from his first stint with the UFC, and “Rumble” wonders if [autotag]Paulo Costa[/autotag] is about to meet the same fate.

Costa’s (13-1 MMA, 5-1 UFC) weight cut has been the talk of UFC Fight Night 196 fight week. He was originally supposed to fight Marvin Vettori (17-5-1 MMA, 7-3-1 UFC) in the middleweight headliner, but the situation has progressively unwinded with the fight being bumped up to 195 pounds, then ultimately 205 pounds. Costa claims he was 211 pounds when he arrived in Las Vegas for the ESPN+ streamed fight at the UFC Apex, and endless drama has followed.

Vettori has been game all the way, taking the changes in weight class in stride. Costa has received a ton of backlash from the MMA community, though, and Johnson is the latest to chime in.

Johnson knows he was far from perfect. He was forced to move from welterweight to middleweight and still came in heavy before finally jumping up to light heavyweight – and even dabbling at heavyweight. However, he said Costa’s actions are beyond the scope (via Instagram stories):

“I missed weight 3 times while fighting for UFC,” Johnson wrote. “Even if I knew it would be a struggle I’d still try and make the weight and not be a b*tch and try to do catch(weight) outta the blue cuz I was lazy. Costa wants the fame and glory without putting in the work. Bash me all you want but even I didn’t make up excuses or cop out.

“If he fights 205 just stay there. That way there’s no more excuses and nobody will see how lazy he is. Trust me going up in weight is much better and makes life easier.”

UFC Fight Night 196 official weigh-ins begin at 11 a.m. ET. MMA Junkie will be on-site with a live stream of the festivities.

‘I won’t let this guy get away with it’: Marvin Vettori explains why he’s fighting Paulo Costa at 205 pounds

After multiple weight changes, middleweights Marvin Vettori and Paulo Costa will throw down in a light heavyweight bout on Saturday.

After multiple weight changes, [autotag]Marvin Vettori[/autotag] and [autotag]Paulo Costa[/autotag] will throw down in a light heavyweight bout in the main event of UFC Fight Night 196 on Saturday.

On media day Wednesday, Costa claimed that he weighed approximately 211 pounds and wasn’t going to be able to make the middleweight limit. According to Vettori, both teams negotiated multiple weights to tend to Costa and after agreeing to a 195-pound catchweight, the Brazilian wanted an even higher weight, prompting the UFC to make it a light heavyweight bout.

Costa (13-1 MMA, 5-1 UFC) will forfeit 20 percent of his purse to Vettori (17-5-1 MMA, 7-3-1 UFC), who slammed him for his lack of professionalism.

“I feel like it’s good for me to give an explanation to all the fans to what’s going on about the fight,” Vettori said. “So basically, I came in, ready to make weight, ready to make 185 (pounds) as always. I came in and a little bit after, they told me Costa is overweight. First, they wanted to do 190, and 190 wasn’t enough so 195 then 198, and then 198 was good for a while, we signed a contract for 195 and then he says 195 he can’t make it. So we’re up to 205.

“I’m making sure I’m gonna give a fight to all the fans Saturday night, and I won’t let this guy get away with it. So, I accepted the fight and we’re gonna f*cking do it. We’re gonna slap this motherf*cker, you know. We’re gonna f*cking beat him. It’s right for me to do it for all of us and for all the fighters who actually struggle to make weight. It was very disrespectful from his side to come in 30 pounds heavier and I’m ready, man, Let’s go.”

‘F*cking frustrated’ from injury layoff, Jessica-Rose Clark wants to inflict pain on Joselyne Edwards

Jessica-Rose Clark plans on taking out all of her built-up frustration on her opponent at UFC Fight Night 196.

LAS VEGAS – [autotag]Jessica-Rose Clark[/autotag] plans to unleash all her built-up frustration on Joselyne Edwards.

Returning from a more than one-year layoff due to ACL surgery, Clark (10-6 MMA, 3-2 UFC) meets Edwards (10-3 MMA, 1-1 UFC) on Saturday on the main card of UFC Fight Night 196.

Clark will make the walk for just the third time in three years. After going through multiple injuries, the 33-year-old Aussie looks to carry on the momentum from her past finish of Sarah Alpar.

“I’m so f*cking frustrated,” Clark told MMA Junkie at UFC Fight Night 196 media day on Wednesday. “Just because obviously I’ve spent most of 2019 on the shelf and then I got injured again in 2020, and I’m just having these year, year-and-half long blocks and it sucks. I’m a full-time athlete, and I can’t even do my job full time.”

She continued, “My goal with every fight probably since I lost to Pannie (Kianzad) – I had a big mindset shift, and my goal with every fight now is just to make it as painful as f*cking possible for the other person. It’s just to be violent, make it bloody, be a dog. That’s it. Typical Australian style is to survive, brawl and be a dog, so that’s my goal. Win or loss, it’s gonna be the worst f*cking night of her life, that’s for sure.”

UFC Fight Night 196 takes place Saturday at UFC Apex in Las Vegas. The card streams on ESPN+. To see the full interview with Clark, check out the video above.
