Tim Means pitches his name for Nick Diaz fight, would love Matt Brown rematch, too

Currently enjoying his best run in years, Tim Means is looking for big fights in the division.

Currently enjoying his best run in years, [autotag]Tim Means[/autotag] is looking for big fights in the UFC’s welterweight division.

Means (32-12-1 MMA, 14-9 UFC) notched his third-straight win, outlasting Nicolas Dalby at UFC Fight Night 190 on Saturday and has two notable names in mind for his next fight.

“I think a fight with a guy like [autotag]Nick Diaz[/autotag] would be fun as hell if he says he’s willing to fight anybody,” Means told MMA Junkie Radio. “But he seems to be only chirping at the guys with big, huge names or whatever. But I’ve been doing this a long time, and if he wants a fun fight, I think that’ll be dynamite, and we’ll see if we can get that dude out of there real quick. He comes with a cool following and a lot of fans behind him, but it’ll just be me and him locked in the cage.”

UFC president Dana White recently gave a positive update about Diaz (26-9 MMA, 7-6 UFC), claiming that we will likely see the Stockton star compete this year. But if not Diaz, Means would also like to run things back with [autotag]Matt Brown[/autotag] (23-18 MMA, 16-12 UFC), who submitted him almost six years ago at UFC 189.

“Anyone in the top 10, hell anyone in the top 15,” Means said. “I saw Matt Brown won the other day. I’d like to get one of those fights back. He beat me here in Vegas, but I just feel like I’m a completely different fighter than I was at those times. I’m calmer, I’m cooler, I’m better looking and just applying things and everything’s falling into place so right now I’d like a top-10, top-15 guy.”

Ovince Saint Preux plans to appeal knockout loss to Tanner Boser at UFC Fight Night 190

Ovince Saint Preux plans to file an appeal of his TKO loss to Tanner Boser.

The co-main event of UFC Fight Night 190 between [autotag]Ovince Saint Preux[/autotag] and [autotag]Tanner Boser[/autotag] ended in a knockout in the second round, but not without a controversial moment just prior to the stoppage.

Saint Preux (25-16 MMA, 13-11 UFC) had Boser (20-8-1 MMA, 4-3 UFC) on his back close to the fence after securing a takedown. Boser tried to improve his posture by pushing himself away from Saint Preux, including using his right hand against the fence for leverage.

At the moment, it appeared Boser may have grabbed the fence to pull himself up, which prompted referee Jason Herzog to step in and touch both fighters, an action that usually signals a pause to the action. However, Herzog did not pause the action after making contact and allowed the fight to continue.

Alternate replay angles shown during the broadcast made it appear that Boser’s fist was closed as he pushed against the fence, which is legal. He also denied grabbing the fence during the post-fight news conference.

The action resulted in Boser getting back to his feet and landing strikes that resulted in a knockout stoppage just a few seconds later.

MMA Junkie confirmed Saint Preux now plans to protest the result following a report from MMA Fighting, claiming the referee’s actions caused him to pause during a key moment of the fight.

“I felt the ref put his hand on my back, which is only done to pause the action or call a finish,” Saint Preux said in a statement. “I slightly paused and then the tide turned. We will be protesting and requesting a no-contest.”

Saint Preux’s return to the heavyweight division did not go as planned as he was down on the scorecards after the first round. If Saturday’s second-round stoppage result stands after appeal, he will be 0-2 in the weight class.

Tanner Boser denies fence grab prior to KO of Ovince Saint Preux at UFC Fight Night 190

Tanner Boser insists he didn’t intentionally cheat against Ovince Saint Preux prior to scoring a knockout at UFC Fight Night 190.

LAS VEGAS – [autotag]Tanner Boser[/autotag] insists he didn’t intentionally cheat against Ovince Saint Preux prior to scoring a knockout in the UFC Fight Night 190 co-main event.

In the second round of the heavyweight bout at the UFC Apex, Saint Preux (25-16 MMA, 13-11 UFC) secured a key takedown that halted a one-sided beatdown on the feet through the first five minutes. Boser (20-8-1 MMA, 4-3 UFC) scooted toward the fence, then put his arm against the cage and got leverage to work his way into a standup. Seconds later, he teed off for the knockout finish.

There was immediate analysis from the commentary team on the broadcast, as well as from spectators on social media, about whether Boser broke the rules to get a fight-alternating standup or if he used a closed fist to push off the cage, which would not be deemed an illegal action.

Boser was asked about the controversy post-fight, and he repeatedly said he doesn’t recall any wrongdoing from his part.

“I heard his corner yelling about it, but I don’t remember doing it – I don’t think there was,” Boser told MMA Junkie post-fight at UFC Fight Night 190. “Their job is to be in the best interest of their fighter. If they believe that I grabbed the fence, they have every right to be angry. I don’t believe I grabbed the fence. I didn’t see on the replay that I grabbed the fence, and I’m confident I didn’t grab the fence. But if they believe that’s what happened, they have the right to be upset because that’s their guy. It’s up to the coaches to be on their guy’s side.”

Regardless of outside perspectives, Boser left the octagon with his hand raised in what was nothing short of an essential fight for his career.

After suffering back-to-back losses, Boser made a 21-day turnaround from his bout with Ilir Latifi on June 5 and took the fight with Saint Preux on short notice, and with essentially no training camp. It was a risky move by the Canadian, but Boser said he’s happy his decision paid off with a win.

“The last two fights were so razor thin, I knew I had to go in and kind of leave it out there,” Boser said. “No one is going in there looking for the judges, but I knew I kind of had to leave it out there and look for the stoppage because apparently I’m not going to get a win if it goes to those guys.

“Three losses in a row can be it, and if it’s not, the next fight is absolutely do or die. So I treated this one as if it was do or die. I had nothing against my opponent. I don’t (have anything against my opponent) pretty much ever, but I needed a win and it was dire.”

Ciryl Gane now comfortable fighting ex-teammate Francis Ngannou, willing to wait for shot

Ciryl Gane would be willing to sit out for a year to wait for a heavyweight title shot after UFC Fight Night 190.

LAS VEGAS – [autotag]Ciryl Gane[/autotag] thinks his UFC Fight Night 190 main event win over Alexander Volkov solidified his position to challenge for the heavyweight title, and he’s willing to wait for the opportunity.

Gane (9-0 MMA, 6-0 UFC) continued the strong start to his career Saturday when he outworked Volkov (33-9 MMA, 7-3 UFC) to a clear unanimous decision in the headliner at the UFC Apex. Despite only turning professional in August 2018, “Bon Gamin” has quickly developed into an elite contender.

There have been questions about whether Gane’s push has been too quick, but every time he gets a perceived test, he passes with flying colors. He said he’s now ready to challenge for UFC gold.

“I think today I proved it,” Gane told MMA Junkie post-fight at UFC Fight Night 190. “I don’t need another fight for the title shot. I think this guy Volkov was a really great challenge to prove it, and I proved it. I did it. So, tomorrow, yes, if the UFC want to match me for the title shot, I’m ready.”

In most divisions, Gane’s body of work would put him right in line for the belt. Heavyweight isn’t one of those weight classes though, and Gane could potentially be third in the queue to challenge champion [autotag]Francis Ngannou[/autotag].

Ngannou (16-3 MMA, 11-2 UFC) is expected to defend his title against Derrick Lewis in September. Then there’s a hope from much of the MMA community that Jon Jones will challenge the winner. Former champion Stipe Miocic also is in the mix.

If Jones can’t strike a deal with the UFC to fight the Ngannou vs. Lewis winner, then perhaps Gane could move to the front of the line. There are no guarantees, but as of now he said he’s willing to sit on the sidelines and wait to see how the situation unfolds.

“I think we can wait,” Gane said. “This will give us time to improve in some department of myself. So I can wait, and I have a baby coming next month.”

Whenever Gane’s opportunity does come around, it would seem a matchup against Ngannou would be the biggest potential fight, since the pair are former teammates and got their starts in MMA with the same gym in France.

Fighting Ngannou isn’t something Gane was super keen on during his rise up, but he thinks the stars now have aligned, and he’s ready to put personal feelings aside for the stakes of a UFC title.

“I’m comfortable with this matchup if this matchup is going to happen,” Gane said. “Now, for title, I’m really comfortable with this situation because we was born in the same gym. Before, it was a little bit (uncomfortable), you know? Now I’m comfortable. We’re going to fight for the belt. This is beautiful for us, for me, for him and my coach.”
