UFC 289 results: Amanda Nunes retires after one-sided title defense vs. Irene Aldana

Amanda Nunes has decided to go out on top, as she retired following UFC 289 in Vancouver.

[autotag]Amanda Nunes[/autotag] retained the UFC women’s bantamweight title in a near adversity-less affair Saturday in Vancouver, British Columbia – and she left both gloves and both belts in the cage.

In the UFC 289 main event at Rogers Arena, Nunes (23-5 MMA, 16-2 UFC) defeated Mexico’s [autotag]Irene Aldana[/autotag] (14-6 MMA, 7-4 UFC) via unanimous decision (50-44, 50-44, 50-43). The win was her seventh career title defense.

The bout was largely one-sided, outside of a hard punch Aldana nailed Nunes with in the opening minutes. For the 20-plus minutes that followed, Nunes was in her zone. Her boxing was crisp and confident. Her jab battered and bloodied Aldana for the majority of 25 minutes, with takedowns mixed in.

But the most historic moment of the entire event came after the official decision. From the start of her in-cage interview with Daniel Cormier, Nunes signaled she had an announcement.

After the premises were searched for a pair of scissors, which were eventually located, Nunes had the following to say, as she took off her gloves.

“My mom has been asking me so much to do this for so long,” Nunes said. “She can not take it anymore, my family, as well. Nina has been around me for so much with me, my whole career. She’s pregnant now. We’ve been in this road for so long. I decided right now, I’m still going to enjoy everything that I’m making. I’ve got to travel a little bit with my family. I’ve got to spend more time with my family in Brazil as well. I left them so young to come here and chase this dream and everything. It was never a doubt in my mind that I’d become champion. But when I became a champion it was unbelievable – a double champion, as well.”

In her parting words, Nunes also called on her fellow countrymen and countrywomen to claim UFC gold. No other Brazilian fighter currently holds UFC gold.

“I have one more thing to say,” Nunes started. “I come from a small city in Brazil. The name is Pojuca. Nobody knows where it is in Brazil, but I made it here. I’ve become a champion and the only champion Brazil has right now. So, Brazilian fighters, get your sh*t together. Come get a belt, all right? I’m leaving. Thank you.”

Nunes, 35, retires as the fighter many believe to be the greatest female MMA combatant of all time. Her resume includes wins over former UFC champions Cris Cyborg, Valentina Shevchenko, Ronda Rousey, Miesha Tate, Holly Holm, Germaine de Randamie, and Julianna Peña. Her only two losses under the promotion’s banner came against Cat Zingano (September 2014) and Peña (December 2021).

Video: Fans fall as UFC 289 railing collapses during fighter walkout

A scary moment took place during a UFC 289 walkout when a large group of fans tumbled through the barrier and onto the runway.

A scary and unexpected moment took place Saturday at UFC 289 as fans tumbled into the runway after a railing separated from its rightful position.

The fans in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada were rocking throughout the night, but were ready to explode for the final home country fighter, Mike Malott, to make his walk to the cage.

Almost immediately upon the beat drop for Malott’s signature walkout song of “Fat Lip” by Sum 41, a row of fans in the typical position to attempt high-fives with the fighters or get a close-up Instagram story, spiraled downward.

Luckily, Malott avoided damage from the falling metal and human – and according to UFC commentator Jon Anik, the fans involved also were also unscathed.

The fall was only briefly shown during the UFC 289 broadcast, which triggered shock from a puzzled community of viewers. However, multiple angles of the incident surfaced on social media shortly thereafter.

UFC 289 results: Charles Oliveira swarms Beneil Dariush for incredible first-round TKO

Former UFC lightweight champion Charles Oliviera halted the lengthy winning streak of Beneil Dariush in impressive fashion at UFC 289.

[autotag]Charles Oliveira[/autotag] is back in position for another title shot, and added another impressive finish to his extensive highlight reel in the process.

The former lightweight champion ended Beneil Dariush’s lengthy winning streak in the first round in the UFC 289 co-main event Saturday at Rogers Arena in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. The striking of Oliveira (34-9 MMA, 22-9 UFC) proved too much for Dariush (22-5-1 MMA, 16-5-1 UFC) to handle, as the referee stopped “Do Bronx” from inflicting more damage at 4:10 of Round 1.

Things got off to a fast start when Oliveira landed a big head kick in the opening exchanges. The impact got a big reaction from the Vancouver crowd, but Dariush was able to steady himself and get into the clinch. The fight went to the mat a moment later with Dariush on top, where he began looking for hard ground and pound.

Oliveira, though, always comfortable from his back, isolated a leg and went for a heel hook. Dariush escaped and went back to punching and controlling from top position.

With about 90 seconds to go, the fight returned to the feet, where Oliveira would land another big head kick. Dariush was wobbled and Oliviera swarmed with punches as he hunted for the finish. Dariush did his best to grab a hold of Oliveira to stop the swarm, but he was unsuccessful, and referee Jason Herzog stopped the action with 50 seconds left to go in the round.

During his post-fight interview, Oliveira called for a rematch with lightweight champion Islam Makhachev. Oliveira lost the lightweight title in their first meeting at UFC 280 by submission. The result halted an 11-fight winning streak that carried the Brazilian to the title.

Now, things are back on track for the UFC’s all-time finishing leader (20).

On the other side, Dariush sees his eight-fight winning streak come to an end. Dariush was promised a title shot if he were to win this contest, but after dropping his first fight since 2018, he now has more work to do to get that long-awaited opportunity.

UFC 289 video: Mike Malott submits Adam Fugitt, completes Canadian sweep in Vancouver

The UFC’s first Canadian card since 2019 was a good one, as the home-born fighters went 5-0 on the night.

The first UFC card held in Canada since before the COVID-19 pandemic outbreak turned out to be a faultless one for the home country fighters.

[autotag]Mike Malott[/autotag] was the fighter to complete the clean sweep for the Canadian fighters, as Saturday he submitted [autotag]Adam Fugitt[/autotag] on the pay-per-view main card of UFC 289. The card was held at Rogers Arena in Vancouver, British Columbia.

Malott (10-1-1 MMA, 3-0 UFC) clubbed Fugitt (9-4 MMA, 1-2 UFC) with a two-punch combination before he sank in a deep guillotine choke. Malott rolled into mount, squeezed, and got the tap.

The win was the fifth for Canada-born fighters Saturday with Marc-Andre Barriault, Jasmine Jasudavicius, Aiemann Zahabi, and Kyle Nelson also victorious at UFC 289.

After the fight, Malott cut a Canada-centric promo on the mic, in which he claimed stake to the event for his home country.

The victory moves Malott’s winning streak to six, while Fugitt picks up a loss after a TKO win over Yusaku Kinoshita in February.
