UFC 271 results: Tai Tuivasa outslugs Derrick Lewis, knocks out ‘The Black Beast’

Tai Tuivasa and Derrick Lewis made good on their promise to deliver a slugfest, and the Australian delivered the highlight-reel finish.

HOUSTON – [autotag]Tai Tuivasa[/autotag] and [autotag]Derrick Lewis[/autotag] made good on their promise to deliver a slugfest, but ultimately it was the Australian who delivered the highlight-reel finish.

The heavyweight bout was the co-main event of Saturday’s UFC 271 at Toyota Center and aired live on pay-per-view.

The two men set up in the center early and gave a respectful amount of distance to start the contest. As each felt out the range, Tuivasa offered a few early low kicks before pressing inside and driving the action to the cage. Lewis wrapped the arms as he defended against the fence, trying to stall the action. Tuivasa was able to land a few knees inside, but referee Dan Miragliotta brought them back to the center on a restart with the action stalled.

Lewis started the reset with a high kick and then a flying knee before unleashing a massive punch over the top. He then drove inside and briefly looked for a single-leg, though Tuivasa was able to remain upright. Lewis continued to work from the clinch and was eventually able to land a trip takedown, scoring with some ground-and-pound before Tuivasa worked to stand. Lewis landed several big right hands in the following sequence, but Tuivasa was able to absorb them and move to his feet.

In the final minute, Lewis muscled through another takedown and landed a few short elbows inside, but a gritty Tuivasa once again worked back to his feet, and the tension-filled round ended in the clinch.

In the second, Tuivasa opened with a low kick, but Lewis answered with a series of massive punches that landed clean. Tuivasa survived the barrage and then defended a takedown before the two men just started unleashing bombs in the pocket. Both men landed, but it was Lewis who staggered first. Tuivasa seized the opportunity and went for broke, ripping off punches in close quarters. They found their mark, including a sneaky elbow inside that touched the chin and sent Lewis crashing face-first to the canvas, ending the slugfest at the 1:40 mark of the second frame.

With the win, Tuivasa (15-3 MMA, 8-3 UFC) now boasts a five-fight winning streak, with all five wins coming by knockout. Lewis (26-9 MMA, 17-7 UFC) falls to 1-2 in his past three bouts, with both losses coming in his native Houston.

Cannonier (15-5 MMA, 8-5 UFC) earned a critical victory for his career with a second-round TKO win over Brunson (23-8 MMA, 14-6 UFC) at Toyota Center in Houston, putting him at the forefront of the title conversation at 185 pounds.

UFC 271 results: Jared Cannonier TKOs Derek Brunson with savage elbows

Jared Cannonier may have finally solidified the title shot that’s eluded him when he beat Derek Brunson at UFC 271.

HOUSTON – [autotag]Jared Cannonier[/autotag] may have finally solidified the title shot that’s eluded him thus far in his career by beating [autotag]Derek Brunson[/autotag] at UFC 271 on Saturday.

After falling short in title eliminators twice before, Cannonier (15-5 MMA, 8-5 UFC) got over the hump with a second-round knockout over Brunson (23-8 MMA, 14-6 UFC) in a bout many viewed as the table-setter for the next middleweight contender. A gruesome series of elbows ended the fight at the 4:29 mark.

The 185-pound bout was the featured main card matchup Saturday at Toyota Center.

Brunson approached the beginning of the first round as one would expect. He threw punches to figure out his range but changed levels at every opening and got on Cannonier’s legs. He secured a number of takedowns, but Cannonier repeatedly found his way up. That opened up his striking, though, and Brunson connected with a right hook for the knockdown late in the round. He pounced on Cannonier and nearly got a rear-naked choke to finish the fight, but he ran out of time.

Brunson attempted to continue his momentum with an immediate takedown in Round 2. Cannonier got back to his feet, though, and landed a number of solid punches that seemed to take the steam out of Brunson. The takedown attempts for Brunson went by the wayside, and he struggled to find the range on his punches and kicks. Cannonier grew in confidence as time ticked off the clock, and he landed a huge elbow that rocked Brunson with less than one minute left. Cannonier took Brunson down and landed some vicious elbows from side control to knock his opponent out cold.

After securing the win, Cannonier now turns his attention to tonight’s UFC 271 middleweight title headliner between Israel Adesanya and Robert Whittaker.

“Get Dana (White),” Cannonier said in his post-fight interview with Daniel Cormier. ” I want the title shot next. I get it next. Nobody else. Me next.”

UFC 271 results: Bobby Green puts on striking clinic in dominant win over Nasrat Haqparast

Bobby Green picked up a dominant win over Nasrat Haqparast, putting on a striking clinic at Saturday’s UFC 271.

HOUSTON – [autotag]Bobby Green[/autotag] is once again building momentum.

The UFC veteran picked up a dominant win over [autotag]Nasrat Haqparast[/autotag] at Saturday’s UFC 271. Green won without controversy, scoring 30-27 across all three judges’ scorecards.

The lightweight bout opened up the main card at Toyota Center, and it was a vintage “King” Green fight.

With his hands down and head forward, Green (29-12-1 MMA, 10-7-1 UFC) baited and countered Haqparast (13-5 MMA, 5-4 UFC) for the majority of the first round. Haqparast did have some moments and bloodied Green from the top of the nose. However, Green was able to stay a step ahead and land the better and more precise shots.

The second and third rounds were a very similar story. Haqparast marched forward, looking to land on Green, but the crafty veteran managed to move out the way of most strikes and pick apart Haqparast from the outside. His volume and accuracy grew as the fight went on.

It was a clean and dominant showing by Green. He landed 163 significant strikes according to the UFC’s metrics.

Green now finds himself two wins removed from his most recent defeat, where he lost a decision to Rafael Fiziev at UFC 265 in August. The bout won the card’s Fight of the Night award. Green is now 6-2 in his past eight bouts. His recent win includes notable wins over Clay Guida, Lando Vannata and Al Iaquinta.

Meanwhile, Haqparast was unable to return to the win column. The 26-year-old was coming off a decision loss to Dan Hooker back in September at UFC 266. Prior to this two-fight losing streak, Haqparast was 5-1 on his previous 6 trips to the octagon.

UFC 271 results: Roxanne Modafferi loses retirement bout in decision vs. Casey O’Neill

Roxanne Modafferi closes out 20-year MMA career with a loss to Casey O’Neill at Saturday’s UFC 271.

HOUSTON – [autotag]Roxanne Modafferi[/autotag]’s farewell from MMA didn’t go as she wanted.

“The Happy Warrior” lost a hard-fought split decision to top prospect [autotag]Casey O’Neill[/autotag] in her retirement fight, 29-28, 28-29 and 28-29 on the judges’ scorecards.

The women’s flyweight bout was part of the UFC 271 preliminary card at Toyota Center and aired on ESPN ahead of the night’s pay-per-view main card.

Modafferi leaves the sport with her head held high despite the defeat.

“I’m OK with that last fight,” Modafferi said in her post-fight interview. “I gave it my all. It’s time to pass the torch to the next generation. I’m proud of myself. Even if you don’t win every time, you can still have an amazing time. This has been an amazing life journey.”

[lawrence-related id=2520543,2520241]

It was a hard-fought bout, where Modafferi displayed a ton of heart and toughness.

In the first round, the fight developed solely on the feet. It was clear O’Neill had the better and harder shots, but Modafferi also had her moments. Modafferi bloodied O’Neill’s nose and gave her a black eye in the first five minutes of the fight.

The second round was far less competitive. O’Neill found her range both offensively and defensively and began picking apart Modafferi with slick combinations. Modafferi’s striking was less effective but did manage to score a takedown with seconds remaining in the round.

In the final round, Modafferi put forward a valiant effort, but O’Neill was far ahead in the striking. O’Neill connected hard and often. “The Happy Warrior” never took a step back despite the damage delivered by O’Neill.

With this result, O’Neill (9-0 MMA, 4-0 UFC) remains unbeaten in her professional MMA career. She’s notched four consecutive UFC wins in just short of a year, having debuted for the promotion on Feb. 20, 2021. In her previous bout, O’Neill stopped UFC women’s flyweight champion Valentina Shevchenko’s sister, Antonina, in a second-round TKO at UFC Fight Night 193 back in October.

On the other hand, Modafferi (25-20 MMA, 4-8 UFC) closes her nearly 20-year professional fighting career on loss. “The Happy Warrior” made her MMA debut in 2003 and since has compiled 46 professional fights.

The 39-year-old retires having fought for several major championship belts including UFC, Strikeforce and Invicta FC. Modafferi also hold many notable wins over Vanessa Porto, Andrea Lee, Antonina Shevchenko, Barb Honchak, Marloes Coenen, and others.

UFC 271 results: Ronnie Lawrence survives late scare, takes home decision win over gritty Mana Martinez

Ronnie Lawrence dominated the opening 10 minutes against Mana Martinez, but had to survive a furious comeback attempt to take home a win.

HOUSTON – [autotag]Ronnie Lawrence[/autotag] dominated the opening 10 minutes of his bantamweight contest with [autotag]Mana Martinez[/autotag] but had to survive a furious comeback attempt to take home a decision win.

After a wild final frame, Lawrence was awarded a unanimous call, with scores of 29-27, 29-27 and 29-28. The matchup concluded the UFC 271 early prelims on ESPN+ at Toyota Center ahead of the night’s pay-per-view main card.

Lawrence was cruising early, using pinpoint striking to score three knockdowns in the opening two rounds to go along with four takedowns, as well. The performance in the second frame was enough for him to earn 10-8 scores from two of the three cageside judges. But with Martinez down on the cards heading into the third, “Manaboi” was aggressive, doing exactly what you’d want for a fighter with nothing to lose. The gamble paid off, with spinning strikes landing clean to go along with shots down the middle, earning Martinez a pair of knockdowns in the final five minutes.

With the crowd on their feet, looking to will the hometown fighter to a thrilling comeback win, Lawrence was instead able to lean on his wrestling to slow things down and survive until the final bell, where he was awarded the decision win.

Afterward, Lawrence (8-1 MMA, 2-0 UFC) admitted he was disappointed in his performance but now owns a five-fight winning streak, including a perfect mark in the octagon. Meanwhile, Martinez (9-3 MMA, 1-1 UFC) sees a three-fight winning streak snapped.
