In the main event, [autotag]Jan Blachowicz[/autotag] (28-8 MMA, 11-5 UFC) will put his light heavyweight title on the line against resurging contender [autotag]Glover Teixeira[/autotag] (32-7 MMA, 15-5 UFC). [autotag]Islam Makhachev[/autotag] (20-1 MMA, 9-1 UFC) will look to break into title contention when he takes on short-notice replacement [autotag]Dan Hooker[/autotag] (21-10 MMA, 11-6 UFC), who has won fans over with his game demeanor. UFC 267 also marks the return of [autotag]Khamzat Chimaev[/autotag] (9-0 MMA, 3-0 UFC), who takes on his sternest test to date in China’s [autotag]Li Jingliang[/autotag] (17-6 MMA, 9-4 UFC).

Fatima Al Baloushi, Deputy Director, Events Bureau at DCT Abu Dhabi

UFC 267 takes place Oct. 30 at Etihad Arena on Yas Island in Abu Dhabi. The main card is expected to air on ABC after prelims on ESPN networks.

MMA Junkie caught up with Fatima Saeed Al Baloushi, Deputy Director of the Abu Dhabi Events Bureau, to fill fans in on what they can expect during fight week, as well as the requirements needed to attend the event.

Check out the Q&A with Al Baloushi below:

Rob Font says he was offered UFC interim title fight vs. Petr Yan, but turned it down because of COVID-19

The call to replace Aljamain Sterling against Petr Yan initially came for Rob Font, but he had to turn it down.

The call to replace Aljamain Sterling against [autotag]Petr Yan[/autotag] initially came for [autotag]Rob Font[/autotag], but he had to turn it down.

Bantamweight champion Sterling (20-3 MMA, 12-3 UFC) wasn’t medically cleared for his co-main event rematch against Yan (15-2 MMA, 7-2 UFC) at UFC 267 on Oct. 30 and as a result, the promotion opted to create an interim title fight.

Cory Sandhagen (14-3 MMA, 7-2 UFC) wound up replacing Sterling, but the UFC granted rising contender Font (19-4 MMA, 9-3 UFC) the opportunity first. However, Font said he recently tested positive for COVID-19 and has barely gotten the chance to resume to training.

“We got the call, but I just got off the whole COVID situation,” Font said in an interview with Middle Easy. “We weren’t training, so I couldn’t jump into that fight. I was pissed, but things happen for a reason.

“My understanding it was kind of just me and Sandhagen. (The UFC) pretty much said, ‘Hey, we want to see if you’re going to do it, but we’re also offering it to Sandhagen ,as well.’ So, it was unfortunate we had to turn it down, but it was pretty cool that we got the offer.”

Font is coming off a five-round battering of former champion Cody Garbrandt in his first UFC headliner in May. After passing up on the opportunity to face Yan due to the short-notice nature, Font will now face another former champion in Jose Aldo (30-7 MMA, 20-6 UFC) in the main event of UFC Fight Night on Dec. 4.

“I would have been doing it just to do it,” Font said on accepting the Yan fight. “It wouldn’t have been my best performance, but we get another tough fight, another legend, and I’m excited to get in there and put this guy away.

“I love (Aldo’s) style. I grew up watching him, I think I match up well with him. I think my length, my accuracy, my movement and my feints are going to be a lot for him to deal with. I feel like I’m going to overwhelm him, just the looks I give him, and then hopefully everything goes smooth, I capitalize and get him out of there as soon as possible.”

Although Yan lost his title to Sterling via disqualification in a fight he was firmly in control of, Font thinks Sandhagen has the style to beat him.

“I’m going with Sandhagen,” Font said. “I think he’s very smooth and very calculated on just picking his shots and not rushing it. I think he’s going to just kind of win a decision and just kind of be a smart, well-played out, long striking type of matchup.”

From blood diamonds to EFC champ to UFC? How stars have aligned for Themba Gorimbo to try and fulfill UFC dream

Themba Gorimbo will look to punch his ticket to the UFC when he competes in front of Dana White at UAE Warriors 24.

[autotag]Themba Gorimbo[/autotag] is doing everything he can to best position himself for a shot at the UFC.

Gorimbo (9-2), EFC’s welterweight champion, almost got that opportunity when he received the call for Dana White’s Contender Series in April. But struggles to obtain a U.S. visa forced the Zimbabwe-born fighter from South Africa to withdraw from the opportunity.

“On April 15, I received a message from my manager telling me Sean Shelby was looking to get me on the Contender Series this year,” Gorimbo told MMA Junkie. “Before I got my contract, I then got a message from Shelby stating that getting guys in for (Contender Series) without a visa has already become a challenge for them, and they have to stop bringing more guys. However, he stated that if anything changes, he will let me know.”

Gorimbo hasn’t competed since defending his title with a second-round submission of Lyle Karam in March 2020 at EFC 84. With his initial chance to punch his ticket to the UFC gone, Gorimbo has taken matters into his own hands by booking a flight and visa to Dubai and his efforts have already paid off.

Initially intending on serving as a backup fighter for UFC 267 in Abu Dhabi, Gorimbo has received the call to face Contender Series alum Ramazan Kurmagomedov (9-0) at UAE Warriors 24 on Oct. 29, a night UFC president Dana White is expected to be in attendance to film an episode of “Dana White: Lookin’ for a Fight.”

“This is the stars aligning for me to get into the UFC,” Gorimbo said. “Fighting in front of Dana White was something that was supposed to happen on the Contender Series, and I did not get a chance to because of the visa situation. I believe that the stars have aligned for me to win in an impressive fashion in front of Dana to earn my spot in the UFC.”

Gorimbo has a stern test ahead of him in unbeaten Kurmagomedov, who already notched a win on the Contender Series in 2019 against current UFC welterweight Jordan Williams, but it wasn’t enough to impress White. The Russian was also booked to face Alex Oliveira at UFC Fight Night 186 in February, but was forced to withdraw.

But despite all of Kurmagomedov’s experience on the big stage, Gorimbo is not intimidated.

“Ramzan is a great match for me,” Gorimbo said. “I looked him up and saw that he’s already been on the Contender Series and he won. He was booked to fight in the UFC and who knows what happened there, too. He is undefeated right now until I give him his first loss in MMA. I am a winner and I win.”

Gorimbo, 30, grew up in a village in the province of Masvingo and became an orphan after losing both his parents by the age of 13. He fled Zimbabwe in 2008 after a life of mining diamonds as a teenager and is now ready to use his story to inspire others on the big stage.

“At the tender age of 16, I became a diamond smuggler in the bloody diamonds of Marange, Zimbabwe just to get by and look after myself,” Gorimbo said. “Eventually smuggling diamonds had to be stopped by the government, and I almost got killed there, and I left Zimbabwe at the age of 17 for South Africa as a border jumper in search of a better life and opportunities. I’ve worked as a painter, security, and gardener here in South Africa while doing MMA on the road to becoming a champion.

“Ever since becoming a champion in EFC in 2019, I’ve been trying so hard to get a big opportunity in UFC, the best organization in the world. I have always visualized myself becoming a champion in the UFC. I believe if the pandemic didn’t happen, I would be in UFC now and climbing the ranks already because I am willing to fight everyone. Myself and my manager, we have been pushing on getting me in the UFC, but it’s currently hard to get in due to the visa issues all around the world.”

Dan Hooker explains making of Islam Makhachev fight, says return home after UFC 267 is ‘indefinite’

With Dan Hooker answering the call for UFC 267, he’s not sure when he’ll get to fly home to New Zealand.

With [autotag]Dan Hooker[/autotag] answering the call for UFC 267, he’s not sure when he’ll get to fly home to New Zealand.

Hooker’s decision to replace Rafael dos Anjos against [autotag]Islam Makhachev[/autotag] (20-1 MMA, 9-1 UFC) Oct. 30 in Abu Dhabi came in the spur of the moment, but “The Hangman” admits he hasn’t really thought past the fight.

“I knew that RDA had pulled out after my fight, and I could feel there was no one else,” Hooker told The Mac Life. “Tony Ferguson is being Tony Ferguson, Beneil (Dariush) is signed to Ali (Abdelaziz), as well – I didn’t think he would take the fight, either. So I knew I was the only real option. They called me up, and I’m a happy man. I’ll see you in Abu Dhabi.”

Having just defeated Nasrat Haqparast at UFC 266 less than a week ago, Hooker (21-10 MMA, 11-6 UFC) was booked to fly back to New Zealand after barely making it to Las Vegas on time for the fight due to numerous travel hurdles. But now that he’s accepted to make a one-month turnaround, he has no idea when he’ll be able to obtain a voucher to get a quarantine spot at home.

“Now it’s indefinite,” Hooker said. “It’s not like stupid money (the UFC is paying him). It’s money to justify what they’re asking me to do. They’re asking me to pretty much leave my country and so with that, I need enough to set up a life here for however long, because there are Kiwis that have been stuck in New Zealand for a couple of years now. So it’s all well and good being like, ‘Yeah, I’ll take the risk,’ but not being able to go home for a couple of years, that’s daunting to a lot of people.”

Hooker will step in to face one of the least sought-out fighters on the roster, which makes his willingness to compete that much more impressive. But despite Makhachev’s dominance over the lightweight division, Hooker is not intimidated.

“He’s got a bit of the Khabib mystique, it’s rubbed off on him,” Hooker said. “His last few performances have been like fairly dominant. I’ve trained with Drew, and the way he fought Drew was pretty decisive. Even his last fight, he came out there, and it was a pretty dominant fight. There’s definite skill there, but I would love to be the first one to get out there and just make him look human, because I know we all are.”

He continued, “I’ve been in the gym with these guys. They all bleed, they all get tired, they all get injured, they all get hurt, and I know I can put anyone’s light’s out. So to everyone else, he’s kind of a mysterious character that’s got a lot of mystique and invincibility. To me, he’s just another body.”

Dan Hooker makes quick turnaround, steps in to face Islam Makhachev at UFC 267

Islam Makhachev needed an opponent at UFC 267 and Dan Hooker will fill in on a quick turnaround.

A top lightweight matchup has been added to UFC’s return to Abu Dhabi.

Following his recent win at UFC 266, [autotag]Dan Hooker[/autotag] is already set to make a quick return to the cage against another top lightweight competitor as he will face a surging [autotag]Islam Makhachev[/autotag], who was recently left without an opponent as Rafael Dos Anjos suffered an injury.

UFC 267 takes place on Oct. 30 at the Etihad Arena on Yas Island in Abu Dhabi. A source with knowledge of the matchup confirmed the news with MMA Junkie following an initial report from ESPN.

Hooker (21-10 MMA, 11-6 UFC) overcame a number of last-minute travel hurdles to make it to Las Vegas to compete against Nasrat Haqparast at UFC 266 last weekend. Despite the hiccups, Hooker arrived on time, made weight, and went on to win the bout via unanimous decision on the prelims of the pay-per-view event, snapping a two-fight skid. Now, he is set to return less than a month away against a very dangerous top-ranked lightweight.

Makhachev (20-1 MMA, 9-1 UFC) was scheduled to face Dos Anjos for the third time, however, their meeting fell apart yet again due to an undisclosed injury. Currently riding an eight-fight win streak, Makhachev will compete for the third time in 2021, following two submission victories over Drew Dober and Thiago Moises.

With the addition, the current UFC 267 lineup is as follows:

  • Jan Blachowicz vs. Glover Teixeira – for light heavyweight title
  • Petr Yan vs. Cory Sandhagen – for interim bantamweight title
  • Magomed Ankalaev vs. Volkan Oezdemir
  • Islam Makhachev vs. Dan Hooker
  • Marcin Tybura vs. Alexander Volkov
  • Khamzat Chimaev vs. Li Jingliant
  • Shamil Gamzatov vs. Michal Oleksiejczuk
  • Virna Jandiroba vs. Amanda Ribas
  • Ricardo Ramos vs. Zubaira Tukhugov
  • Damir Ismagulov vs. Magomed Mustafaev
  • Makwan Amirkhani vs. Lerone Murphy
  • Alen Amedovski vs. Hu Yaozong
  • Allan Nascimento vs. Tagir Ulanbekov
  • Albert Duraev vs. Roman Kopylov

Aljamain Sterling explains UFC 267 withdrawal, says he’s still dealing with lingering nerve issues from neck surgery

UFC bantamweight champion Aljamain Sterling has not fully recovered from his neck surgery.

UFC bantamweight champion [autotag]Aljamain Sterling[/autotag] has not fully recovered from his recent neck surgery.

Sterling (20-3 MMA, 12-3 UFC) says he was not medically cleared for his UFC 267 rematch against [autotag]Petr Yan[/autotag] (15-2 MMA, 7-2 UFC), and as a result, he was pulled from the Oct. 30 contest in Abu Dhabi.

Sterling explains that he tried to push through training, but when uncharacteristic fatigue set in, he was concerned and asked for the fight with Yan to be pushed back to the end of the year.

“Let’s clear the air today. I am NOT injured for my real fans, family, and friends that are asking/wondering. To the haters, trying to take away my attention from my teammate, @merab.dvalishvili, to talk about myself and my situation isn’t what I wanted to do.

Merab looked amazing on Saturday night and had a wicked performance! My situation is complicated. It’s the neck that we’re talking about! This is the BEST I’ve ever felt, waking up in the morning and being able to live life pain-free from nerve issues that’s I’ve had for 10+ years now.

As always, I like to share the truth and be transparent with my fan base that actually give a shit about fighters health. Training has been going well but I’ve been struggling to get my body to push pass 2 RDs in sparring sessions. The fatigue that sets in and the cramping still lingers, which my surgeon said is due to the nerves still recovering from the long-term trauma, and surgery I just had. Nothing I can do about that, other than show up in another shell of myself and risk wasting the surgery and maybe getting severely hurt!!

I originally wanted to fight in December but the plans were pushed up earlier. Unfortunately, my body isn’t agreeing with me and I asked for an extension and asked for Petr Yan to wait, so that I will be the first man in the UFC to beat his ass.

I flew in @adrianyanez93 to help with training looks. I want to see how this week goes and see if overtraining was the real issue for all the fatigue, since I was playing physical “catch-up” for fighting much sooner than expected. I will discuss this more on my podcast today @theweeklyscraps. But here’s a quick version of what I’m dealing with. Thankfully the @UFC team understands how serious spine surgery can be and are allowing me the extra time to get my body right so that there are NO EXCUSES when I fight again. 💯

Yan was quick to accuse Sterling of running away and doesn’t plan on waiting for him. Instead Yan will remain on the UFC 267 card and a potential interim title is currently being discussed with Cory Sandhagen as the frontrunner to replace Sterling.

Petr Yan rips ‘sneaky coward’ Aljamain Sterling for pulling out of UFC 267, calls for any top-10 fighter to step up

Petr Yan has every intention of making the walk at UFC 267 – with or without the champion.

[autotag]Petr Yan[/autotag] has every intention of making the walk at UFC 267 – with or without the reigning champion on the opposite side of the cage.

Yan (15-2 MMA, 7-2 UFC) had an inkling UFC bantamweight champion [autotag]Aljamain Sterling[/autotag] (20-3 MMA, 12-3 UFC) wouldn’t make it to their fight and doesn’t appear too surprised that Sterling did, indeed, have to withdraw. The champion recently underwent neck surgery and won’t be ready in time for their rematch on Oct. 30 in Abu Dhabi.

An interim title is being discussed, with Cory Sandhagen (14-3 MMA, 7-2 UFC) as the frontrunner to replace Sterling. But Yan is issuing a challenge to the entire top 10 or anyone the UFC sees fit for the co-headliner spot against him.

“You all know what’s just happened to my fight,” Yan said in an Instagram post translated by RT Sport. “You all know that ‘Aljo’ just ran away like a sneaky coward. Here is what I would like to say: I am not going to sit and wait for him. I am going to fight on Oct. 30 in Abu Dhabi, and I would like to address the UFC. UFC, give me any fighter. Top five, top seven, top 10, anyone who deserves to fight for the belt, and I will get the job done. I’ll show you here who really is champ.”

Sterling captured the bantamweight title via disqualification at UFC 259 in March when Yan was penalized for an illegal knee to a grounded opponent. The loss marked Yan’s first octagon setback and put a quick end to his championship reign.

With Sandhagen, who’s coming off a razor-thin decision loss to former champion T.J. Dillashaw in July, alluding to accepting the fight, Yan may already have found a replacement.

UFC 267 takes place Oct. 30 at Etihad Arena on Yas Island, Abu Dhabi. The main card is expected to air on ABC after prelims on ESPN networks.

Rafael dos Anjos out of UFC 267; Islam Makhachev needs new opponent

Rafael dos Anjos vs. Islam Makhachev has been derailed yet again as the pair won’t fight at UFC 267.

[autotag]Rafael dos Anjos[/autotag] vs. [autotag]Islam Makhachev[/autotag] is off – again.

After multiple failed previous bookings between the lightweight contenders, the promotion tried again for UFC 267 on Oct. 30. A little more than a month out, though, the fight has fallen apart.

MMA Junkie verified with Makhachev’s (20-1 MMA, 9-1 UFC) manager, Ali Abdelaziz of Dominance MMA, that the fighter is in need of a new opponent after dos Anjos (31-13 MMA, 19-11 UFC) was forced to withdrawal from the contest.

The confirmation came after the pair exchanged some messages on social media indicating the fight was off, with dos Anjos stating he has a “terribly injury” (via Twitter):

Abdelaziz told MMA Junkie that his two preferred candidates to replace dos Anjos would be Tony Ferguson, who is in the midst of a three-fight losing skid, or Dan Hooker, who is coming off a unanimous decision win over Nasrat Haqparast at UFC 266 on Saturday.

It’s unknown at this time if either of those fights are realistic, but Makhachev, who has won his past eight fights, is no stranger to having difficulty getting fights.

The fight between Makhachev and dos Anjos was originally scheduled for September 2020, but dos Anjos caught COVID-19. It was rescheduled for November, but then Makhachev caught COVID-19 and it was canceled again.

Champ Aljamain Sterling out of UFC 267 vs. Petr Yan; interim title fight considered

Petr Yan could still fight for an interim title at UFC 267 after Aljamain Sterling was forced to withdraw because of injury.

UFC 267 has lost a champion – but an interim title fight could be made in his absence.

Bantamweight titleholder [autotag]Aljamain Sterling[/autotag] is out because of injury, but the hope is for his opponent, former champion [autotag]Petr Yan[/autotag], to remain on the card and fight for an interim title.

Two people with knowledge of the situation confirmed the news Saturday to MMA Junkie after an initial report from MMA Fighting. The people asked to remain anonymous as the promotion has yet to make an official announcement.

The current frontrunner to replace Sterling is Cory Sandhagen, who’s ranked No. 3 in the promotion’s official 135-pound rankings. Although no bout agreements have been issued to Yan or Sandhagen, both sides are open to the potential booking.

UFC 267 takes place Oct. 30 at Etihad Arena on Yas Island, Abu Dhabi. The main card is expected to air on ABC after prelims on ESPN networks.

Sterling (20-3 MMA, 12-3 UFC) won the 135-pound strap at UFC 259 in March when Yan (15-2 MMA, 7-2 UFC) was disqualified for an illegal knee to a grounded opponent. Although the promotion was eager to turn the fight around for a rematch as quickly as possible, Sterling was resistant to fighting Oct. 30 in Abu Dhabi because of neck surgery, but he ultimately gave in.

The disqualification was Yan’s first loss since a controversial March 2016 split decision defeat to Magomed Magomedov at ACB 32. Thus far in his promotional tenure, Yan owns wins over the likes of John Dodson, Jimmie Rivera, Urijah Faber, and Jose Aldo, whom he defeated for the vacant title in 2020, among others.

If booked, Sandhagen (14-3 MMA, 7-2 UFC) would enters his first UFC title shot off a split decision loss to T.J. Dillashaw in July, which snapped a two-fight winning streak that included quick knockout wins over Marlon Moraes and Frankie Edgar. Besides the defeat to Dillashaw, Sandhagen’s only other promotional loss came against Sterling via first-round submission.

Tristan Connelly out of UFC 267 fight against Makwan Amirkhani

Makwan Amirkhani will need a new opponent for UFC 267.

[autotag]Makwan Amirkhani[/autotag] will need a new opponent for UFC 267.

According to Amirkhani, [autotag]Tristan Connelly[/autotag] (14-7 MMA, 1-1 UFC) is out of their Oct. 30 fight in Abu Dhabi due to undisclosed reasons. MMA Junkie confirmed the news with a person with knowledge of the situation who asked to remain anonymous since the promotion has yet to make an official announcement.

Amirkhani (16-6 MMA, 6-4 UFC), who is expected to remain on the card, took to Instagram to react to the news.

“Yes he is out. It’s a sad story cause it would have been a great matchup between me and Tristan. He said in a interview that he is not expecting that same Makwan what we have been seeing in my last fights. “We will see a hungry Amirkhani. Tristan you where right on that one brother and now I’m even more hungrier! I’m the flow. 30.10.2021 #ufc.”

https://www.instagram.com/p/CThF4YMNX6E/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link

Amirkhani is looking to snap a two-fight losing skid after dropping back-to-back unanimous decision losses to Edson Barboza and Kamuela Kirk. Prior to that, “Mr. Finland” picked up a first-round submission of Danny Henry at UFC 251.

Canada’s Connelly was also looking to get back in the win column. After upsetting Michel Pereira in his promotional debut, Connelly returned from a 19-month layoff due to injury, but fell short in his featherweight debut when he was defeated by former CFFC champion Pat Sabatini at UFC 261 in April.

With the change, the UFC 267 lineup includes:

  • Champ Jan Blachowicz vs. Glover Teixeira – for light heavyweight title
  • Champ Aljamain Sterling vs. Petr Yan – for bantamweight title
  • Rafael dos Anjos vs. Islam Makhachev
  • Magomed Ankalaev vs. Volkan Oezdemir
  • Marcin Tybura vs. Alexander Volkov
  • Khamzat Chimaev vs. Li Jingliang
  • Virna Jandiroba vs. Amanda Ribas
  • Ricardo Ramos vs. Zubaira Tukhugov
  • Damir Ismagulov vs. Magomed Mustafaev
  • Makwan Amirkhani vs. TBA
  • Alen Amedovski vs. Hu Yaozong
  • Allan Nascimento vs. Tagir Ulanbekov
  • Shamil Gamzatov vs. Michal Oleksiejczuk
  • Walt Harris vs. Tai Tuivasa
  • Damir Ismagulov vs. Magomed Mustafaev
